Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 51,146 vehicle sales for December 2021, a 19.5 percent decrease compared with December 2020 (63,558) as Subaru continues to face supply chain shortages. For the full year, Subaru sold 583,810 vehicles, a 4.6 percent decrease compared with calendar year 2020. These results are reflective of the impact the semiconductor shortage has had on the automobile industry.

Problem with the BRZ I'm hearing is there will be very few shipments... Next shipload might even be in the summer! Expect those numbers to go up when the ship arrives and drop as all the cars sell.

Ha. I'm double sided on this.



One side I wonder how you think there is a problem when it had it's best December ever. In only it's second month released. I don't recall the previous BRZ topping 1000 units in one month. If it did, it was only once or twice.



On the other side, there are 633 retailers and they have now sold over 1500 units in two months. Enough for every retailer to sell at least one.......and we are still yet to see our first one.

Its just that things are so different now with the demand and lack of inventory, the monthly numbers are going to be quite strange... Lots of models with manufacturers will see BIG single month spikes and big drops afterwards because the cars are selling as soon as they arrive and many models can't be delivered steadily every month.

A good example of this prior to the pandemic was the Golf R. There were MAYBE two shipments of those to the US per year, so you would see inventories and sales at zero then suddenly have a spike in both when the ship arrived and the numbers would drop steadily for months until they were all gone.

Now low volume models like that are just gone instantly. Very different world.

I guess we'll need a couple more months to see if that's the case. Inventory is supposed to be better in the coming months; but, maybe not to "proper" levels. I see them pushing the BRZ out regularly as it's a newer model and they want to push it. I certainly don't understand the behind the scenes; but, I wonder if that since this is a Toyota as well, has Toyota been able to secure more semiconductors on their end to help with this? Is that how it works? Or not?

Meanwhile, KIA sold 701K vehicles; up 20% from 2020...
Clearly, supply chain issues didn't impact Hyundai/KIA that much.

They kept production going through the pandemic. I remember back in 2020 when they kept manufacturing going, they were stock piling vehicles at ports which was costing them a lot of money but seemed like a gamble that paid off. This most likely kept key accounts/orders a priority so they are not nearly as impacted now.

Good for them. I'm speculating/wondering at this point; but maybe most of the chips they need to manufacture their vehicles are produced locally in South Korea? Less reliance on chip suppliers outside of South Korea?
