Glad to hear you are enjoying it. EV is a better experience than automatic ICE. Have you tried the Single Pedal button? That’s even better.
Our dealership was proactive in the days leading up to 8/16 and reached out to customers to allow them the option of re-contracting their purchase agreements to include the 5% non-refundable deposit provision.

Single Pedal is not quite as strong as Tesla’s and only brings you to a stop if you lift and coast earlier than you would normally. Still, it’s great in stop and go city traffic.

That is great to hear about your dealer! You might be the only ones in the country with a fighting chance at getting the credit.

Yea, I haven't driven the Solterra but based on reviews it matches what you say. Not as strong, but it does bring you down to like 1-2 mph before you use the brake pedal. I love Tesla OPD and wouldn't want to lose that (Solterra is at least close).

These vehicles were the subject of an earlier recall requiring the replacement of original hub bolts. Subaru identified an issue with vehicles repaired at two port locations by one particular team of contractors. The teams did not properly complete the repair procedure resulting in the potential for significantly under-torqued bolts. Out of an abundance of caution, Subaru is recalling all vehicles repaired at all port locations supported by the third-party contractor. Vehicles without the original hub bolt concern and vehicles repaired at other facilities are not affected.

What makes you say that?

The spec for my OB in the manual says 65 ft-lbs. Do you know how low 65 ft-lbs is? You can undo them with a 3/8" ratchet. I torque to 80 on my own, my other car is spec'd at 140

I am sure the third parts was given specific instructions. Each VIN was verified, checked on the spread sheet, each corner checked, etc.

Who knows what spec they were given and what they did?

I just know that FHI and now Subaru has some screwed up wheel torque specs.

Peace,

Greg

Toyota bZ4X AWD:

"High consumption and poor range."

Only allows two DC-fast charging sessions per day, then it restricts user to AC-slow charging.

Didn't even see this. I'm sure that after ALL that time, that the "proper" procedures were well established, communicated, and well known to the third parties.....considering it wasn't all of them. Had the newer recall included all of them, I would agree with you.

And blaming Subaru is off since the entire build process is Toyota. They screwed the pooch here and I am sure with flub #2, Subaru will probably implement added checks. They have their own junk to worry about and now with their partner. Just like the DIT issue is Subaru's. This is Toyota's.

I've never used fast charging. Having not watched the video, it looks like they tested that in cold weather, when all EV's burn more electricity to create heat for both occupants and the battery.

Yes, he is in Norway. He explicitly ranks his testing based on temperature and/or wet/dry to be fair.

The car does not have pre-conditioning. He tried to yo-yo it to warm up the battery, but with it being a smaller battery, he couldn't adequately do that w/o risking his ability to reach the charger.

He plugged into an Ionity DC stall (350 kW max), and at 5% SOC it was pulling 70 kW, bZ/Solterra AWD max is 100 kW. That is very slow by modern standards.

Then the efficiency is rather poor, like an Audi eTron or old Volvo XC40, as neither motor sleeps. He got over 293 Wh/km, which was worse than a Model Y (155).

Nokians don't help the situation of course. But all of his winter tests are on snow tires.

Here is a great look at the utility and interior fit/finish/functions of the bZ4X. He even installs a rear facing car seat base, and puts a single-seat stroller in the trunk.

In May, Toyota is updating the bZ4X (Solterra too?) in Norway (USA?).
  • Increase range 10-15% / Decrease the battery buffer.
  • Increase DC sessions from 2 to 3.8 sessions (might be kW based not attempts).
  • Increase charging speed 20-80% / Decrease time from 100 min to 60 min.
  • SOC Percent view in addition to Miles.
  • Estimated range will be adjusted. Reduce displayed impact of HVAC on estimate.
  • Consumption improved. No longer show with charging losses.

Average car, terrible efficiency and charging speed.

Test drove a Solterra. I must say, it drove very nice. Plenty of torque in normal driving, and Power mode adds some extra zip. Felt like it must make a Forester or Outback seem old and busted.

S Pedal (One Pedal) worked for a little and then deactivated. Might just be related to PDI status. Normal driving (coasting) was fine, and the car didn't run away as many automatics do. I was impressed overall.

I did notice a decent amount of wind noise, but oh well. I didn't get the play with the infotainment as she was still pre-PDI.

Interior is nice, and the Peugeot-style cluster above the wheel was fine, not issue seeing it. I did not feel like the steering wheel was in my lap, as some have complained. The backseat is huge. The trunk is very usable. I was impressed.

Just fix the range, charging and efficiency please!

This is subaru's first attempt at an EV. Range and charging speed will come with time, and honestly I think are overrated. These aren't intended to be jack of all trades cars. They're second cars for a person or family with two vehicles.

I think they look awful. Unpainted black plastic harkens back to the days when japanese car companies didn't paint bumpers and side view mirrors to save money. It doesn't look rugged, it just looks cheap.

I actually like the overall look. The front is questionable.

220 miles and 100 kW charging, in 2023, is unacceptable. This is advertised as your do everything, go anywhere, adventure mobile. It should be able to drive you to a national park and back, without having to stop twice, when everyone else stops once or not at all. It is not competitive, in that aspect.

No 5 seater EV should be sold as a weekend toy.

They're sold as commuters, and for people who live in places that are close to the mountains. Nobody in their right mind is thinking that they're driving this for days at a time to get to some random national park. This expectation that they're going to go 500+ miles and recharge like a Tesla is absolutely ridiculous. It's a different class of car, and you pay accordingly. Maybe Subaru needs to tone back on their marketing strategy a bit, but this isn't going to compete with something like a tesla or a rivian, but you're also not paying those prices... it's okay to scale down expectations.

300 miles, more like it.

Actually, it is Model Y prices…

Either way, the Koreans have put in the time and have much better platforms. Range is either similar to greater. Charging is light years better.

Does the solterra come assembled with random flooring products from home Depot? Betting the fit and finish and overall quality of the solterra is a step up... Lol

The Korean offerings are definitely a step above. No way I'd consider a solterra with the competing kia and Hyundai offerings out there. I wasn't thrilled with the battery fire risk on the cheaper ev's from them though, so I went Nissan.

I still just think the measuring stick bring used on these initial EV models is unrealistic.

I will ignore the comments about Tesla.

It is 2023. These cars are worse than a 2012 Model S. That is bad. They had plenty of time to develop cars. It's not like they are start ups (who actually are making better, more efficient cars, at larger volume lol).

The starting price of a 2012 model S was $96,570. Basically 100K. Inflation corrected, that's $130K in todays money. And yet that's still the yardstick you want to use?
