Has anyone one of us with SVX's gone head to head with a WRX....With 230 hp and heaps of torque, I just wondered how close it would be, even with the damm auto trans..The cars arent even that far apart in the weight...

Maybe this will get some talk over here....

(I know what all the mags say , but I drove a rex, and it didnt SEEM much quicker...)

I'd like to take on a WRX on the freeway. Around town, and off the line I know that the WRX would have a big edge. The SVX isn't quick as much as it is fast- from 60 mph on up, watch out- I've walked all sorts of cars at higher speeds. Any takers?

My friends father has a 1994 SVX and my friend has a 1996 Mustang GT.. Well, the SVX had no trouble keeping up with the tang from 0-60 and passed our asses when we got to the highway. Man I love Subarus!

I think the WRX would take an SVX from a roll or from a stop. From a stop the SVX would lose badly, while from a roll it should be close, but I give the edge to the WRX.

Now we just need the race to happen so our bench racing can be validated.

Good idea, as I will soon have both, my SVX and a new WRX it should be alot easier to arrange a match. Problem is, I may need to find someone other than my wife to drive one of them

this is precisely why I started this thread. I think its going to be closer than some think due mostly to the issues mentioned above, low end torque, highway gearing, etc. The SVX seems to pull from 2400 right up to 7500. Probably depends on the Rex driver's ability to shift..

Also , indeed a couple hundred xtra pounds, but doesnt that involve inertia? It may be harder to get moving, but once it is moving, isnt the weight less of a factor?

When I test drove an SVX some time ago an inquisitive WRX started to play (this was on a freeway here in Sydney).

From the lights, no competition...WRX was gone.

However, in the midrange, the SVX just pulled and pulled while the WRX was screaming its head off though the gears......nothing in it and neither got a real advantage.

Given that one of my close friends has a WRX, I will no doubt be able to post videos etc once I manage to get a hold of a decent SVX.

Oh.....point to point, the WRX would murder an SVX....but considering the weight/size disparity, this isn't surprising.

ANy idea how close the SVX is to the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4? I don't think it is far off so I am willing to have a go at it.


My car has the following numbers:
- 3,850 pounds (stock, empty)
- 320 hp at 6,000 rpm
- 315 lb*ft of torque at 2,500 rpm (I love this number)
- 6-speed
- All-wheel drive
- All-wheel same-phase steering (above 30 mph)

In fact, with the stock trim I have I beat a WRX at Watkins Glen. He raced one day earlier than I did, taped his lap so I knew his time, and someone timed me so I knew I beat them. I got a 1:45 and they got about a 1:50. Just a guess but I would say the SVX is a better road "touring" car than the 4-cylinder WRX.

SVX is not nearly as quick as your car. not NEARLY.
unfortunately the SVX is not twin turbocharged, nor is it turbocharged at all . sad but true, man o man would it be a beast if it was turboed.
it only has a large N/A 3.3L H6 that puts out 230hp @ 5600rpm and 228 lb-ft @ 4400rpm. and whats most unfortunate is that its only available drivetrain is a tall geared 4 speed automatic (number one preformance draw back). lower gears suck. the car is a dog off the line. higher gears are quite good and its got amazing top end accelereation considering its weight and power. it was designed to be a luxary/spotr/GT cruiser. very very smooth on the highway, but because it is also geared highly twards luxary its heavy as hell. between 3500 lbs and 3700 lbs depending on year and options. considering its gearing, its weight, and its power the car can still get up and go surprizingly well. 0-60 in around 7.5s. and quarter mile is around ~ 15.6-15.7 @ ~90-91mph. not bad at all for a 230hp ~3600 lbs 4 speed auto. at regular cruising the SVX has an unusaul (unusaul for subies) 90/10 torque split. (which i wonder if that helps its high end at all with less drivetrain loss?) when pushed into a corner it atfirst suffers from understeer, but when the front wheels start to lose there grip and the car begains to plow all the power is sent to the rear wheeels and you get instantanious oversteer.
the SVX's weakesnt link is its weight and it tranny. its got an awsome (probly underated) engine.

Wow, thanks for the facts. That explains why I never see them. At first my car choice was down to the SVX and the 3000GT. Had I only known the SVX was auto-only it would have been an easy choice. I do still like them though.

Yes it is amazing those are not performance cars (no turbo, no manual gearbox, etc.). Mine is also a touring car. At sixth gear at 70 mph the rpms are just a hair under 2,000 rpm. Talk about tall gearing.

Mine is an amazingly nible engine since it is only a 180 cubic inches, 2.0-liter, V-6 yet it makes 320 base hp. My car is also 4,000 pounds with my modifications and me and fuel. That makes it more fun to tell the BMW M3 driver when I keep up with him on a track and he has me by 800 pounds and an inline car instead of a V.

Anyway, hope to see some more of you guys on the street and there is supposedly a WRX gathering here in Pittsburgh in a few weeks and maybe an SVX will show up. Stop by if anyone is in Pittsburgh.
