02 WRX Owner, just moved to Germany from Cali. Need TUV help!
Hey everyone, I just moved to Freiburg Germany from California permanently for work.
I've got a 2002 WRX wagon that is my baby, I was going to import her, but didn't have the cash, nor enough knowledge of the inspection and registration of modified vehicles here in Germany. So I'm going to take my time and do all my homework before I make the leap to bring her over with the least pain possible. Talking to a guy familiar with the TUV process, he explained to me that if you can find people who have been able to, and have proof of passing TUV with the same parts that you've used, you can use that as ammunition to getting a modified vehicle approved more easily. So here I am, hoping to reach out to the German Scoob community and see if anyone might have similar modifications as myself and can assist me in bringing my baby put here! Without further A due, here's the mod list. Suspension- All Whiteline products. Adjustable Front swaybar Adjustable rear swaybar HD gold aluminum end links, front and rear. HD gold aluminum rear swaybar mounts. Poly steering rack bushings Tokico D-specs, with Epic Engineering springs. Wheels and tires- 18x9 Rota Grids wrapped with Federal RSR rubber Stoptech pads Motor mods- Cobb access port running stage 2 APS TMIC Cobb intake Perrin Turbo inlet MISHIMOTO radiator Invidia G200 turbo back exhaust with Invidia catted and wrapped down pipe. Catless up-pipe. Also have the ability to take care of doing a vf48swap stateside with STI dark blue injectors, and walbro fuel pump before I get here... Held off on doing it before I came till I could see if it was a good or bad idea. If people have thoughts or suggestions about that, throw it out! Stoked to be here, hopefully all can go well and I can bring her out without too much hassle!

As a fellow Californian in Germany (I'm in Bruchmuhlbach-Miesau, near Kaiserslautern), I can tell you four things:
1. Germans don't like loud cars. Get a silencer ASAP, because they WILL bust out the decibal meter. 2. Germans don't like low cars. Stock ride height (or a little higher, to be certain) 3. NO LEAKS. If that means spraying the undercarriage before you go in for inspection, do it. You don't want even the slightest hint of there ever having been a leak, and I mean that. 4. No ABS lights, airbag lights, etc.. You can get away with a CEL depending on the mood of the inspector, though. Other than that, as long as you don't have anything obnoxious to make it stand out, you should be fine. Oh and just as in California, front window tint is illegal so make sure you don't have any. I'm military so our inspections are done on-base, but we still have to abide by TUV standards. |

What mods did you have, if any, when you brought your Scoob over? |

I'm pretty sure as a civilian you'll have to have a cat in, as military I can be catless.
As far as mods done, I've got a bit done. The most noticable ones are my suspension and exhaust.. both of which were commented on, but I passed. They're pretty strict about mods, so it would be to your benefit to either APPEAR stock, or have stock parts you can swap in. I'm pretty sure that on the economy you have to have certificates for your mods, but I'm not sure how they'd check that at inspection. |

No I do not, and not to be rude, but have a little patience before hijacking threads with completely unrelated topics... A forum isn't a cellphone, you shouldn't expect instant responses.

I should be able to get your car through the TUV... but it will not be cheap. 300-500 euros Problem is the TUV guy will need to write into your papers all the mods.. and that costs money... If you get caught driving around with a part that is not in your paper you will be walking. ...Ask me how I know have a look at my car (IWSTI "VIPERGUY") and think how much of a pain in the ass it was for me to get TUV papers.
looking at your list Suspension- All Whiteline products. -No issue Adjustable Front swaybar - no issue Adjustable rear swaybar - no issue HD gold aluminum end links, front and rear. Problem HD gold aluminum rear swaybar mounts. Problem Poly steering rack bushings no issue Tokico D-specs, with Epic Engineering springs. Will need papework rev Wheels and tires- 18x9 Rota Grids wrapped with Federal RSR rubber Rotas... Not sure those will fly Stoptech pads that's not a mod Motor mods- Cobb access port running stage 2 they will never know APS TMIC Might need paperwork rev Cobb intake no issue Perrin Turbo inlet no issue MISHIMOTO radiator no issue Invidia G200 turbo back exhaust with Invidia catted and wrapped down pipe. I have this.. Catless up-pipe. they will not know... |

Oh man... You're response is exactly what I've been hoping for. Thanks! Could you help me out and answer a few more questions, or even better, have time for a phone or skype call to walk me through the process or issues? A few questions, by paperwork revision, does that just mean they add the modifications to the paperwork of your vehicle to document that you have the and they consider the modification safe/safely installed, regardless of being "TUV approved"? Why do you think that the Whiteline Endlinks would be a problem? Just for clarification, they're these- http://www.rallysportdirect.com/Whit...2007-WRX-Wagon They're definitely a safer and stronger upgrade to the stock ****ty plastic ones... Also, what do you think the issue would be with the wheels and tires? Just the wheels? or just the tires? Both? You said you have the same Exhaust as I do, did they have any issues with the noise level? or did you get it inspected with a silencer installed? Dunno about your car, but mine is friggin loud. |

Are you talking about getting it inspected on Base? I'm not a member of the military, so I'm not sure that would work. Although from what I understand their TUV is allot more lenient.

Bumparuski's.
Excited about the potential of getting my scoob over here. If I keep getting good news I'm going to start looking into doing all the maintenance and extra work I'd like to do before I bring it over. The to-do list. I've gotta get valves adjusted/valve cover gaskets replaced so there's no leaks when I bring her over, got a slight seep. If I keep getting good news on getting it approved here, I'm thinking about using that opportunity to do pistons/rods at the same time. Fresh Clutch/Flywheel. After the motor work I've got a vf48, 565 injectors, and fuel pump I was planning on putting in soon, so I'd likely do that after the motor is re-enforced, along with a tuning sesh. Box and ship!
