engine knock all gears during WOT
Hi. I recently had engine problems with misfiring and rough idle after I was involved in an accident. It turned out to be a timing belt issue and was fixed at the subaru dealer. Now the car idles fine and accelerates smoothly except when I'm close to or at WOT, usually around 3k-4k. That's when I start to feel the engine buck and the CEL begins to flash. The CEL turns off after a few seconds. I am running on a stock engine with stock ecu.
Things that checked out at the subaru dealer and are okay are spark plugs, coil packs & wires. They said that cylinder 4 compression test came back "slightly" less then the other three cylinders. They wanted to go and remove the cylinder head to check the valves, but I didn't want to do that just yet due to lack of funds. Also, they said that there is no guarentee that my engine problem is there. Are there things I can look for myself? If it's fuel system stuff, what are some tests that I can do or things I can change to try and aleviate this? I also have a tatrix cable that I received just a couple days ago so I can do some data logging, but I don't really know what I should log or look for. I've already cleaned the MAF with some MAF cleaner. Looked around for loose vacuum tubes. Used Seafoam. Reset ECU. Tried the Vishnu Reset. Even reflashed my ECU to the newest Stock ECU rom. The car is still drivable. It just bums me out a bit cause I can't really "put the pedal to the metal".

Sorry if i'm not any help but i was wondering about that |

No, I hit someone else going approx 10-15 mph. I didn't want it to go on my dmv record.

I'm not sure what the actual compression tests read. I'll probably get around doing a test myself sometime this week. After doing a bit more driving, I've noticed that the misfiring occurs when I have boost greater than 9-10 PSI. The last CEL was a P0303 for a cylinder 3 misfire. Since this is occuring under higher boost levels, is it a possibility of it being related to a faulty hose?
Otherwise, the engine runs nice and smooth at all rpms as long as boost is below 10PSI. Last edited by dumbkid; 12-31-2006 at 12:18 AM. |

Any other bright ideas?
I would love to sell it, but the cars been paid off and it sure is nice not having any car payments. I think it will be cheaper to fix it, even if it costs a grand or so. |

How many miles has the car done? Sounds like an air metering issue, try swapping another MAF and then test.... I had the same issue with some slight pinging under light load, ended up changing to 02 sensor and MAF, problem solved and back to 16psi

The car has 70,000 miles on it. I'll look into swapping the MAF and/or O2 sensor.

check your plug gap As I had this happen and after a while it throw a rich code. That's where I would look.

I just did a compression test on my engine.
The results are: 1 - 129, 130 2 - 128, 128 3 - 131, 132 4 - 127, 126 I'm not sure how much difference there should be allowed between cylinders. Could cylinder 4 with slightly less compression be the cause of high boost misfiring? I checked the gaps on the plugs and they are all even. They are fairly new and I just recently changed them after the accident, and having just removed them, I checked the gaps again and they are still good. I'll be stopping by my mechanic later to see if he happens to have a MAF around that I can throw on my car. |

Those were done on a cold engine right? Its ok that they are off by a few psi.

Actually, those measurements were taken with a warm engine. I know the numbers are a bit low compared to the normal 150 psi readings. This was measured using a compression measuring tool that you can check out from Autozone, so I'm uncertain about the accuracy.
Also, the only CEL that I get now is the cylinder 3 misfire. Since I was doing the compression test, I went ahead and swapped the cylinder 3 ignition coil. After doing that, I still get a CEL cylinder 3 misfire. Can this possibly be a faulty cylinder 3 fuel injector? Last edited by dumbkid; 01-02-2007 at 03:42 PM. |

All four plugs looked the same in color, like a grayish haze.

Sound like your running a little on the lean side. I had the same problem at around 80k. Car was running like absolute ****e. Change the MAF, if that doesn't help check your 02 sensor(should be replaced about now) Definantly a fueling issue.

When you talk about changing the O2 sensor, are you referring the front or the rear O2 sensor?

Check both, go with the rear 02 first. If the front 02 comes from number 3 cyl, then replace it.

^^^^^
Maybe I'm just reading this wrong, but doesn't the exhaust from all the cylinders flow by the front and rear O2 sensor? |

are you talking about the sensor in the up pipe? i think that may be an EGT(exhaust gas sensor). Some subaru's have an 02 sensor located in the front pipe near the radiator, in that case it will only read the left bank of cyclinders.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I was looking at the uppipe and reading the wrong number in the diagram.
