Default Response from SOA on Center Differential

So I asked SOA if my 2009 2.5i MT has a center differential. I also asked about service interval because the center differential isn't mentioned in the owners manual at all.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.
Your 2009 Impreza 2.5i with manual transmission does have a center differential. The details of the AWD system as noted in the 2009 Impreza brochure is: Models equipped with 5-speed manual transmission utilize a viscous-type locking center differential with torque distribution normally configured at a 50/50 split front-to-rear.
As for maintenance recommendations, the information on manual transmission oil is found starting on page 11-20 in the owner's manual and for the rear differential gear oil, the information is found starting on page 11-24. There is no maintenance recommendation for the center differential.
Thank you for the opportunity to be of service. If you need any future assistance, please let us know. Have a great day!

Sincerely,

John J. Mergen

Should I change the oil in the Center differential? I did the rear differential and the actual tranny. If so, does anyone have a pic of what the center differential looks like and if it's hard or easy to change? How mush oil? 0.8qt like the rear dif?

You can't get to the center differential fluid without taking apart the back section of the transmission. It (the center diff) is sealed with the viscous fluid in it.

I just changed my MTF, so does that mean that the new fluid is flowing through the center differential?

Yes.

And why did you ask if you had a center diff? How did you expect to have AWD without a center diff? Transfer case or something?

+1 for what jay25 said
the center diff shares oil with the trans. the actual viscous fluid is internal to the viscous coupling and cant be changed other then replacing the whole coupling.

I asked because the center differential isn't mention in the owners manual at all. I was looking for another case type of compartment where the driveline intersects with the rear wheels. However I didn't see any other areas that could house fluid.

Center and front diffs share oil with the transmission. The viscous coupling unit is buried in the diff and not use-serviceable.
