You note you tried to correct all the issues with the WRX drivetrain, but most of us gearheads know that the more you modify and the further you take the car from stock, the more potential reliability problems you create yourself. I've lost count on how many times I've added a mod that improved performance, but caused it's issues. and annoyances. Aftermarket are rarely designed to the level of quality that OEM parts are. People are always quick to point out just how great the mod is, but won't tell you about the negatives because they don't want to sound like a sucker. It pays to research a lot rather than buying into the head mentality. It's why I'm so selective anymore about what I do to a car and how I've come to terms with keep power levels near stock.

Yes, some cars like the EVO, are built to handle more power, but even your EVO has it's own issues and annoyances. Right off the bat, we all know the EVOs are very raw, loud, rough riding and quite cheap on the inside. That alone was enough to deter me from the car. Then there's the high likelihood that Mitsubishi will be out of the US market in the next 2 to 5 years. Dealerships are already are and few between and Mitsu dealer ratings are margin are best.

Asking any engine to reliably handle 20%+ more power than stock is unrealistic. With an NA car, it's takes thousands upon thousands to gain 20% more power than stock. With a WRX, it's a matter of a $150-600 tune and $300-500 downpipe. More importantly, the gain in torque in substanial which taxes the drivetrain. Power is so easy to gain with these cars and so cheap to come by that people seem to loose sight that cheap and easy doesn't mean it's not impacting reliability.

Long story short, if you want a motor that can handle quite a bit more power than stock with no internal mods, get an EVO, a 2JZ Supra, or 4.6 SC'd Stang. However, keep in mind those cars all have their own specialized issues and EVERY automotive forum is a bitch-fest for just how crappy the car is.

With that said, I'm cutting and pasting from a thread where a BMW tech friend of mine is trying to talk a potential buyer out of a used BMW M5 (E60 chassis, V10 model). I'm just trying to show that all makes and models have their own expensive issues to contend with, even premier BMWs:
Thanks. It annoys me to no end when people complain about subaru reliability, such as citing ringland failures. Those issues are rare!

And then people talk about wrx/STi engines being unable to hold power above 350whp and requiring a rebuild to be reliable. Then people mention you can do so with EVOs. Well with the EVO you have to build the transmission.

Well put. I agree with you 100%

There is no "perfect platform" when it comes to the aftermarket modification.

Every car is going to have unique weak areas that people will try to overcome.

Evo's crack transfer cases in drag applications....normal driving not a problem.

Dont get me started on the glass trannys in the wrx.

What tranny do you have to rebuild? The Evo x 5 speed holds 400whp all day long with zero issues.

wonder what's wrong with my driving or my transmissions

'glass transmission' is the kiddie way of sauing 'i abused the **** outta my car and it broke...bad car----BAD CAR!!!!"

i agree with you on the idiots part.

I disagree that the transmission will hold anything above 400whp...but honestly its the torque that kills it.

And no offense but you seem like the type of guy that doesn't do turbo upgrades. I could be wrong but i figure your upgrades are exhaust, downpipe, intake and a good tune. Nothing wrong with that.....but its
a little less stressful on the setup than say a 35r.

You will come back to me with a "Doooooooooooood i am elite on the internet.

This is true but there are a ton of failures on here at stage 2 power from said idiots. IMO the wrx will handle whatever the stock block will if driven properly. To say you need a built motor for a certain setup and expect a stock trans to hold up to it is kind if silly. As for the sti Subaru was very nice to give such a nasty trans, most companies don't leave that much room for upgrades on stock parts...in this price range anyway.

Your right, you see Sti's with 6-700hp on stock 6spd, granted obvious suspension upgrades and etc. It's about how you drive it.
I have an 03wrx with 174k miles. I've burnt the clutch once maybe twice and it's my first manual car. I baby it, its never seen over 5k rpms while I'm driving... but yet my friend who is 17 jumps in and does a pull to like 7k. Needless to say i immediately got pissed and was back in the drivers seat.. He will never drive my car again..

I have a huge resentment against Subaru at this point... After 2 STis and replacing two separate short blocks for two different reasons. So to the guy that started this thread... They do blow up and are not reliable. STis that is not subaru in general just their terrible performance cars ( oil pick up line failure 2006 STi and ringland failure 2008 STi) so i don't tell me they are great cars! And I also know several people into subarus that have had major problems too.

The thread had some very constructive posts and some very good points from both sides.........what do you know......Uncle Scotty appears and starts calling people idiots. With 64k posts he has been around a while. Why not use that knowledge to help others....not cut them down.

I do not care to read it. I read his posts for the first few years and gave up.

He's the only person on any forum ever that is enough of a tool that I've had to put him on my ignore list. Blood pressure is down since then.

If they ever find a cure for severe Asperger's syndrome he might yet learn some social skills.

Only time I see him freak out is towards topics that have been beat to death, like the one we were just discussing. Which unfortunately makes up for about 80% of threads.

Actually when i can i do read most posts including his.....and on some instances he does give good advice. Most of the time he cuts members down and calls them idiots.

Most seasoned members know scotty and thinks it is hilarious.....but for new people he can come off with a negative intent.

I could really care less.....if it makes him feel better to cut people down on the internet more power to him.

Ok.

So let me try to get this right. Your main goal in this forum is to make people look bad and have fellow members laugh at them.

I really do feel sorry for you. I don't know your background and can only imagine what circumstances you must have gone through in your life to have a mantra like this. I aim to treat people with respect and try to share experiences that i have encountered to hopefully help them make more informed decisions.

I am sorry we don't share the same outlook. I don't know you personally but i respect the fact that you have been on this site since 2001, and seem to know alot of information in general about all aspects of the mechanics of a automobile.

If you have useful information or experiences how you have managed to have no issues or problems with your personal vehicles please share it....but to just blurt out " you're a idiot" doesn't help anyone in this forum.

I agree that a check and balance system is healthy.

Just sometimes the manner that it is executed is sometimes a little harsh.

I actually was just watching a youtube video where some guy in a new STI was showing off to his friends doing doughnuts in a parking lot.....and bam!!! He spins a bearing. This individual then would come into a forum crying that his brand new STI is completely unreliable.

I understand where people like uncle get fed up with the newbs. I really do.

So i will retire on this note.....i cant disagree that their are tons of idiots, morons that come on the site and complain about their cars.....but every once in a while you have people (like myself) that don't have all the answers and don't know everything but need help sometimes to figure out what went wrong with their setup or what to do different.
