Cold Air Intake Questions
Hey everybody. I'm running a stock (so-far) '01 2.5 RS and am in the market for a CAI. I've read a lot of threads about different kinds, but haven't yet come across one that lists each kind along with approximate HP gains each offers.
I'm open to pretty much any of them right now, so if you all could post what kind you have/prefer, how much it cost, and what kind of gains it offers (by itself) that would be really helpful. Thanks! Off the top of my head, some that I'd like to know about are: Cobb RalliTek Gravel Sports Ganzflow and any others...

Well, I have the Ganz, and i do infact like it alot. I cant compare it to others since i have never owned them. When the engine is warmed up (fully), you get a good "raspy" sound from the intake... like it or.. love it..hehe. On the butt dyno, i feel more power from 4700-5800, not alot more, but you will need this mod anyway on down the road if you plan to stay NA (all the way!), so the power gains you get with JUST an intake, may not be as much with say, full exhaust and other mods.

1. Cobb... I've had one for two years and have driven cars with most any other intake. Expensive but by far the best I have ever felt on a suby. The low end is there, and the top end is as good as a short ram...
2. AEM is actually not bad either... The low end suffers as it does with any short ram, but top end is nice... Other decent short rams are the rallispec and jc sports, but good luck finding them, neither one is in production 3. Ganzflow/PDM Essentially the same thing... Good for the cost keeps low end in tact and adds some zing, but not gobs like the previous 2. This is my opinion from experience... If you want cheaper go with ganz, if you are going to spend money, go with the Cobb, you won't be sorry... |

6-8 HP gains from the cobb ...main advantage, no noticable low end loss. Others seem to have significant loss at low end. There is a dyno with stage 1 package (intake, catback) on Cobb's website.

Cobb: Nice deep rumble, gives loud deep sound when you gun it. Pretty much accepted as the Uber CAI for our cars. Nice even power gain all with limited to no loss of low end torque. Probably will give you the most gains from these intakes.
But if you live in calm weather...i think the Gravelsports intake would be fun to play with.. |

if you can find a rallispec (full kit not just the intake tube/filter) get it! rallispec dyno'd that intake to put 14HP to the wheels!!!!!!!! this was on a my 99 with an afc correcting for the lean condition about 5500rpm. the non maf based imprezas dont even need an afc. the cobb is nice too and worth every penny.

Anybody know anything about the CAI offered by RalliTek, and how it compares to the others? I thought that's what everyone was talking about, but I guess Rallispec is a completely different company.

I am waiting on my gravel sports intake to come in from ups. It should be here tomorrow. I like in nj so i see it all nice weither, rain, and snow at times. I am not really worried about the water, but i may make a plate to cover the scoop when it rains and just take it off when there is no bad weather. But i cant wait to get it in.

Cobb...Low end kick is still there, and plenty of top-end "passing power!"

So how is a Ganz different from Cobb? (Besides the cost...)
How will a CAI affect gas mileage? (Assuming normal driving) |

Cobb replaces that box. The filter is an inline filter by PRM. That is where most of the magic is. It has a better velocity stack than any other filter I have ever felt. It helps keep the low end grunt and still have great top end gains that aren't as good with the ganzflow. As far as gas mileage, both will increase mileage if you don't romp on it (but you will...). |

i am very pleased with my cobb intake on my 02rs. Definately did not lose any low end torque, possibly gained some? but it could be that cool noise making me think im going faster! The car definately pulled harder than stock. and didnt feel like it died off as the revs climbed just kept pulling. Overall it will add up with the other mods you do. i cant compare it to other intakes because i have not had any, but i can say that you wont be disapointed if you get the cobb.
as for gas milage.. it may help, if you can stop pressing on the gas so much to hear the sweet sound! edit: ha ha oops- samething said above! Pat |

Well i finally got my gravel sports top mount intake and all i got to say is i love it. Sounds mean as hell when you hit the gas and it pulls really nice as well. I also like the sound of the intake taking all the air it can and i can say it sucks in a lot! when i am done driving i popped the hood and that intake is so damn cold. I wish there were dyno results on it, but if you think about it, the results wouldnt be to fair as its best used when the car is moving. But all in all i think its the best intake around. Now i just have to get it professionally painted.

i love my ganzflo. larry is a great guy to deal with too. maybe the ganzflo isn'tthe best, but for the money, i think it is. sounds great in the high end. i wish i could get an aem or a cobb though

OK, so I have this really cheap intake. I went down to our local speed shop and picked it up for like $50. It had a cone filter on the end of an aluminum pipe that is curved at an angle. He said that it was made for a 2.2 or somethin. The pipe was used and spraypainted yellow. I just figured that I might as well try it out. So I took out the 2 airboxes and threw on this intake. It didnt have anything to support it from rattling around. I had also bought a breather filter to use, since the pipe only had 2 places to stick the hoses into. So anyways, I tried it out and noticed that it had no low-end power, but once you romped on it it moved and sounded badass. So the next morning I went outside to start it. The stupid thing vibrated too much and threw the sensor out. It ended up doing this a couple of times because I had no idea that the sensor would go out so easily and I thought that it was from water being sucked into it or something. So anyways I finally figured out why it kept going out. I then sold the intake to a friend of mine that has an '01 Civic and it was on there for about a week. Then he got a CAI for Christmas so he didn't need this one anymore. And I got thinking how I could make that pipe replace the airfilter behind the throttle body. So I figured out that I could use this pipe and connect it to the airbox that is next to the fender. In that airbox I have a K&N filter. I went to Home Depot and got one of those plumbing rubber connectors because I needed it to be long enough for the pipe to reach the intake sensor tube thing. So this is my cheap intake. It seems to work very well for me. I feel that it is a great design. I didnt lose any bottom end and I feel that I have gained some top end. I am very pleased with me cheap intake.

i have an injen CAI
it looks about the same thing as the cobb, it does not use the stock air box its wonderful |

I had a Ganzflow on my car for over a year. A week ago I installed a Cobb intake. The Ganzflow retained all low end torque and was relatively cheap (I paid around $140 w/ K&N Filter). You could really hear the difference with the Ganzflow around 3k RPM. I felt an improvement in the top end.
The Cobb intake was fairly expensive costing me $269. I feel that I lost some low end torque. I had too much low end torque anyways and my car was always jerky in first gear and totally sucked in stop & go traffic. Now the power band seems to be a lot smoother with the Cobb intake. I noticed a very nice gain in my top end. The Cobb is a lot louder than the Ganzflow but sounds real mean. I can actually hear the intake at over the ScoobySport exhaust at higher RPMs! |

OK, I've got the rallitek intake and like it very much. It is not a CAI because it soes not take air from directly inside the fender however. I don't necesarilly think that this is a bad thing though. When the car is moving at any speed, unless you're in a really hot area, there is a lot of cold/cool air coming into the engine bay. This intake can be made into a CAI though with their carbon fiber CAI box.

Danzborin, I have it secured with the stock airbox bolts. It doesn't move around at all.
Krelkor, does the Injen intake not use the airbox that is right behind the throttle body? Because for some reason most of the intakes around use that airbox and just get rid of the other one. |

MAF based cars will typically like the j-tube full intakes (whether true CAI or short ram), MAP based cars typically like the Ganz/PDM/DIY intakes. I've driven all MYs with several intake setups and I still love my short ram Weapon-R the best... my personal preference.
