The high beams have a switched ground, so when they are OFF both sides have 12v. I ran a wire off of the high beams into the car to a factory fog light switch, then back out to my relay box. Lights come on with the high beams only when the fog button is switched to ON.

Stock alternator.
Stock harness.

Only upgrading I did was on the power circuits for the aux lights.

I like the combo of light/horn/light/horn/light

also 2 stock lights + 3 driving/fog lights = legal in all 50 states!

actually no, 2 stock + a maximum of 4 aux lights as long as they are wired correctly(fogs off with highs and only on with lows, driving off with lows and only on with highs)

so you can't have 3 driving + 2 fog, at least not legally... if anyone cares to prosecute/cite you.

that's only some states though.

yeah if you have them covered with opaque covers it's okay but then why have them on at all? just have a removable mount to have them on when you need them, and off when you are driving on road.

i mean, are you going to get out and take the covers off when you need to see deers, and then put them back on when you need to see cops?

I decided that I was going to do something to my subaru to set it appart from everyone elses car. I decided to make my own light bar, I modeled it after the rally inovations discountinued light bar and wanted it to minic the lines of my upper grill but a mirror image. I think it turned out pretty good, I'm going to add two hella 500 fogs to the light tabs. I'm planning to add a sheet of aluminum to the center section of the bar for a skid type protection.
after wleding before grinding

after grinding on the bench grinder

after grinding with my rotozip-awesome tool

painted just a few hours ago

close up of the bed liner spray I used and the light tabs I made

I got impatient and mounted it to the car after baking the bar

mounting point under the car to the subframe and I cut the splash guard to fit

thoughts?
should I got with the clear or yellow hella 500 fogs? Either way I want yellow light for the fogs.

That's something i'd never even worry about because it'd take a real hell bent cop to cite you over your lighting. I mean i can understand it if you had them all on, but other than that, it'd be stupid to cite someone for it.

The only downside to mounting the bar like you did is that they tend to bounce since they are set out so far. I had mine mounted like that and it was very bouncy. I ended up using the license plate screws to make it more solid.

Looks pretty good, I agree with finding another way to make it more stable; you'll get a lot of shake in the lights with the way its set up now. Also, the RI skid guard isn't discontinued, just not as popular as the light bars I suppose.

Hella 500's are great lights for the price and they're really all you'll need if you're not doing some serious backwoods driving.

already got that covered with a secondary mounting point farther ahead of the subframe ones, just didn't post a picture, I can stand on my bar and it'll bend before it'll wobble.

I was going to go with the piaa dual beam 525 setup but they are hella pricey and I'm not sure about the light output, I searched a few of the toyota FJ forums and found a light that was kinda like a hybrid hella fog and driving light

They are originaally $145 ish but they found them at costco for $89

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...se=&lang=en-US

They are the same size as the hellas so I'm gonna try them on my light bar they come with 55w and 100w bulbs and a relay and a cool switch.

Features

* High impact, black resin body
* 55W & 100W halogen bulbs included
* Polished, hardened glass lens
* Multi function reflector
* Multi direction mounting system
* Dimensions: 7"H x 6.5"W x 3"D
* Complete kit includes
o 2 lights with connectors
o Complete snap together wiring loom & relay
o Mouse style switch
o White protective covers
* SAE compliant, legal in 50 states

not sure if I can run them in town, they say 50 state legal, though.

yup online only, they are carried by arb which is a major offroading brand and makes some oem toyota parts, but these are just renamed and are lower priced, seems like a great deal.

Funky-looking lens. Does anyone know what kind of beam pattern these have and if they'd be better than Hella 500s?

it's probably just a mixture of a pencil beam / spotlight and a fog, but basically half of each... so you won't get the brightness or projection of either

its supposeed to be a driving pattern that floods out the sides like a fog light and projects a bit wider then driving lights but not as far.

The only way to have two beam patterns in one housing is to compromise somewhere.
