Default Ford planning Capri comeback?

http://www.motorauthority.com/news/c...apri-comeback/

Quote:

After bowing out of the market in the late 1980s, Ford’s European Capri sports coupe could make a return as a rival to Volkswagen’s rejuvenated Scirocco coupe. Several reports coming out of Germany claim Ford is prepping a new a concept to celebrate next year’s 40th anniversary of the original Ford Capri Mk1 from 1969. The concept will eventually spawn a new Mk4 version around 2012.

In 2003 Ford gave a hint that a new Capri was on the drawing board with the unveiling of the Visos concept car pictured below. The concept shared the same basic coupe-hatch bodystyle of previous generation Capris and also featured the same rear-fender-mounted side intakes. The next Capri would likely feature Ford’s latest Kinetic design theme as seen on the more recent Kuga crossover and Focus range.
According to Autobild, power outputs for the new Capri will range between 140 and 250hp with both four and five-cylinder engines on offer. The car will also be about the same size as the new Scirocco and will be priced from about €20,000.
Ford isn’t the only carmaker rumoured to be bringing back one of Europe’s past sport coupes. Opel is also tipped to be developing a successor to the Calibra based on its recent GTC coupe concept.
With this revival of affordable sports coupes, a whole new generation of car enthusiasts will be able to once again fall in love with some of Europe’s most cherished nameplates.

Looks like a Mazda?

Seriously though, that actually looks pretty good, although I am sure that FoMoCo will manage to screw it up.

The Capri was always crap, even the 2.8 V6 versions. But I'll take a Calibra Turbo 4x4 please.

Just to add - the Calibra and Vectra variants are slated to come here as Saturns. Twin Turbo AWD.

BTW did I not say in several threads that Saturn was bringing us more Turbo models

The car in the pics is from a 2003 concept... if there is indeed a new Capri coming, it won't look anything like that 5yr old concept... chances are it will look more like these cars which represents FoMoCo's new design language:

they wouldn't do that either... they'd be afraid of the Focus RS underpinnings crawling out from underneath the Mustang and cannibalizing it..

Agreed! That Calibra was the hotness back then... I remember growing up and eying those things like crazy... that and the Escort RS Cosworth.... sadly I was too young to drive. damn middle school! All we had back then was a Sierra L Saphire and then later a Rover 214 SLi later... meh..

Default Reborn Capri

Reborn Capri

A legend is ready to return, as Ford prepares to join coupé class with dramatic new star

Auto Express Car Reviews

By Sam Hardy

30th April 2008

It's the car every Ford fan has been waiting to see! Here’s the new Capri.

The original was one of the most famous and best loved models in the firm’s history, and left the scene in the late Eighties. Now, the time has come to reinvent the classic.

Affordable coupés are experiencing a real renaissance, and Ford has already proved its talent for building niche products with models such as the S-MAX compact MPV and Kuga 4x4. So the stage is set for the Capri to make its stunning comeback.

One thing is for sure – it will not be short of competition. Audi has its A5 and Volkswagen has resurrected the Scirocco, while Toyota is planning a Celica replacement based on Subaru Impreza running gear.

There’s also Hyundai’s forthcoming Coupé, plus news that Peugeot has at last given its 308 RC Z the green light for production.

But while there will be an army of rivals, the Capri will certainly have style in its favour. As you can see from our pictures, the new Ford is a real feast for the eyes. If it seems a little familiar, that’s because it takes some cues from the 2003 Visos concept.

However, it mixes those with the company’s latest design themes. At the front there are the trademark twin grilles, with a large lower air intake incorporating neat spotlights. Bold Mondeo-style headlamps complete the Capri’s striking look.

Its profile harks back to the original model, with a tail-heavy stance and familiar C-shaped rear windows and thick pillars. At the back, strong shoulder lines combine with distinctive tail-lights and a sloping tailgate to create a pert-looking rear. A neat roof spoiler and venturi-style lower bumper finish the design off.

Inside, the Capri will offer a 2+2 seating layout, with a cabin inspired by the current-generation Mondeo’s. Under the skin, it’s likely that Ford will follow VW’s approach with the Scirocco, which sits on the Golf platform, and base the car around the Focus. That will mean a front-wheel-drive layout and a similar engine line-up to the family model, with the range topped by the 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged unit from the ST hot hatch.

An RS version, powered by a 3.2-litre six-cylinder motor and offering four-wheel drive, could also be on the cards.

With the Focus as a starting point, things bode well for the Capri’s handling. Engineers will give the new model a sporty suspension set-up to ensure excellent grip and agility. There’s even the possibility it will benefit from the Mondeo’s adaptive damping system. This would provide the car with sharp handling or refined cruising ability at the flick of a switch.

As Ford has yet to officially confirm its new Capri plans, we won’t see the car before the next decade. However, it has been reported that the blue oval is planning to reveal a concept version of the coupé at a major motor show in 2009.

Default Ford to revisit the Capri, will be based on Mondeo

As a part of Ford’s global-model strategy, Ford of Europe will be responsible for most of the design and engineering. Why? Well that’s really the only FoMoCo division that is profiting and has the capabilities to produce models of such caliber.
Along with working on the next-generation Ford Mondeo, which we are expected to see re-badged as a Ford Taurus in the U.S., Ford of Europe is also working on a small sport coupe in attempt to revisit the Ford Capri.

The Ford Capri was design and built in Europe back in the day and was sold in North America from 1970 to 1977 through Ford’s Lincoln/Mercury dealerships. However, the Ford Capri carried no brand badging when it was sold in the U.S.; it simply carried the Capri badge. However, later the car became known as the ‘Mercury Capri.’
The Iosis concept, which was a two-door-concept that heavily influenced the new Ford Mondeo, is expected to be the bases of the small sport coupe. The production model will use the mechanicals of the Mondeo with 2+2 design. Insiders say that the car will be less than 2,600 pounds and will be front-wheel-drive. Power is expected come from a 4-cylinder turbocharged with output ranging from 150 to 200 horsepower for the RS version.
A concept is expect in 2009, however, Ford will debut the concept in convertible form to confuse the competition. If received favorably, the concept could hit production in 2012.

Looks like Ford(EU) took some cues from Mazda on the Coupe design.

Someone in charge of Ford is finally starting to use some sense and sell cars we'd actually want to buy in the modern globalized market.

Hey Ford: Just get the RX8 chassis, put in a turbo-4, different sheet metal, and go to town.
