2012 Subaru WRX Stock Map Log /w Knock
Hello,
This is my first turbo car, and I have just started logging. Car is completely stock with the exception of a boost gauge. I did the log to see if I managed to fix my boost leak at which point I noticed some knocking. I seem to get a bit of knocking both under WOT and around 2000 RPM. I would appreciate if someone could take a look over this. I am using 91 octane fuel with no ethanol. I will try to get some 93 octane fuel and do some more logging. It was around 55F outside when I logged, and my IAT was 77F after car warmed up in my driveway while I was getting set up. I did log my stored A/F learning before and after the drive to see if there would be any change. Before: A/F Learning #1 A (Stored): -7.7 A/F Learning #1 B (Stored): -6.2 A/F Learning #1 C (Stored): -2.6 A/F Learning #1 D (Stored): -2.9 After: A/F Learning #1 A (Stored): -6.5 A/F Learning #1 B (Stored): -7.6 A/F Learning #1 C (Stored): -2.1 A/F Learning #1 D (Stored): -3.1 3rd Gear pull #1 with Feedback knock https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...Dk2X2JaSTlGMEE 3rd Gear pull #2 with learned knock correction https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...VhtU054bDFUVkE Long log of spirited driving. No learned knock, some -1.4 of FBCK. I did hit 15.38 PSI a few times though when the map calls for 13.34 PSI https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...0RVUHpLVEM2cGc another pull that was cut off for some reason just as I hit -2.8 FBCK https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...0hxOXc1Y2gyNUE I think this might have been 4th gear pull My questions are: 1) What should I do about the knocking? I am a bit concerned. 2) For a short 1 hour drive, does it look like my fuel trims are getting better? I think I fixed the problem yesterday.

If you cant run 93 octane all the time, then you need to get tuned on 91oct. If you're tuned on 91 then you can run both 91 and 93. But you shouldnt keep switching back and forth from 91 to 93 on the stock tune. When you run 91 oct the ecu will learn some knock parameters....when you switch to 93 the learned knock will most likely go back to 0. Then when you put 91 back in the tank the car is going to have to knock itself the through the knock learning again. |

Allright. I will use solely 93. I haven't been switching back and forth.
Think I should try to reset the ECU to see if I get any knock now that I have an almost full tank of 93? As well as to keep an eye on my Learned fuel trims? |

resetting is up to you. like i said for switching between gases....if you keep clearing knock, then the car has to knock again for it to learn it again.
The safest way is to let the ecu unlearn it. And the fuel trims will change pretty quickly on their own |

Thank you very much for the help, Phatron. I understand perfectly the switching back and forth between gas. I'll have to see if the 93 octane is helping.
Do my fuel trims look like they are going the right way then? |

I reset the ECU with 93 octane in the tank. IAM got up to 1 really quick. I did some driving around to see how the car is. It seems like it knocked the same or a little more than with 91 octane.
I noticed I get feedback knock (-1.4 usually) around .9 to 1.2 load at the start of the 2000 RPM range. Not always, but at usually like 30% of the time when I start accelerating. Am I doing something wrong that would cause this? I also tried to get a full 3rd gear pull but I got really bad knock of -4.2 and I let off the gas. Curiously, immediately afterwards I was able to do that pull with no knock but starting at 3000 RPM. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...y1ILVBBUEluMmc If I get a tune, is it likely that my knocking will go away? Also is it possible the stock tune is so bad? |

Yes and yes. The stock tunes run very lean well into boost.

No and no!!! Negative 4+ degrees feedback...are you kidding?? Something is mechanically WRONG with this car. A stock set up will NOT knock like this irregardless of the OL/CL delay.
redline 23, Did you install the boost gauge yourself? If so are you positive there are no leaks anywhere? |

I did have a boost leak, and I got it fixed. After driving for a day, all my stored learning (A B C D) were under 2%. Car also pulled better and hit boost as I was supposed to.
I knew I was probably going to get a tune at some point or other before I bought the car. So I did tons of research back then. I bought an accessport and just flashed the 93 octane map. (I did test with the 91 octane map as well). I do hit 16.53 for boost when target is 16.5. As for knock, there is still some tiny amount of knock, but several orders of magnitude less than before. Most of it occurs in low load areas, usually after hitting the gas, which to my understanding is to be expected. Occasionally I saw -2.8 but that only occurred twice in 1 to 2 hours of spirited driving. I will definitively keep an eye on things to make sure everything remains happy. The car was modded then I tuned it. But there was nothing wrong with it mechanically.
