Bad Fuel Mileage
O.k I've been getting Horribel fuel mileage on my Legacy Turbo. What should I do to correct this. i.e buy Fuel injection cleaner? Change Fuel Filter? What else? I use 89 grade fuel. Sometimes when I reve too hard, ya see the needle drop a little low. Sometimes it stays and sometimes it goes back up to where it was. PLEASE HELP. Thanx

a) buy a new car. Legacy Turbos have always gotten bad gas milage.
B) change your filter. c) put in better gas. d) install new wiperblades. e) different rubber compound in your tires. f) install new plugs and wires g) stay off the throttle so much And lastly, your poor fuel milage might be due to the excessive wear on your head. Jason EDIT: Added a couple more possibilities [This message has been edited by Jgrahn555 (edited February 26, 2001).] |

Hahaha, Thanks Jason, you're funny. This Legacy is just a project car. I'm still looking for a used RS to play with.

Change your O2 sensor(assuming all the tune-up items were done). Strictly hi-way , I used to get around 27mpg with my Legacy turbo with all the mods done to it. I don't think that's that bad. Don't remember what it got before the mods.
And no offense ejicon, but I would put a minimum of 92 octane fuel in a Turbo Chevy Sprint! May be in my head from the old days, but if it's turbocharged, it gets the good stuff. I ran Sunoco 94 the vast majority of the time. The few times I ran low on gas and put in some "convenient store" 92, within a few miles the car felt totally different, sluggish, throttle response seemed to go down, etc. Maybe my car was just picky. |

I had the same problem with my 1997 Impreza L. I changed everything from plugs, fuel filter on down to air filter. The only thing that has made any difference was putting on a www.kartboy.com MAF Filter mount and K&N Conefilter.
I'm not sure if you have the same set-up, but if the bolts going into the airbox are 5.1cm by 9.1cm, it'll work. It's simple to install and I went from 19-21 mpg to 26-28!!! <IMG SRC="http://216.242.153.40/memberslist/userpics/2863/intake.jpg" border=0> [This message has been edited by BrysImpreza (edited February 27, 2001).] |

Erm, Brys, you didn't gain 7MPG from the new intake. I guarantee it. Did you reset your ECU at the time you did the intake? That was likely what made the difference. If not, the new intake probably just forced the ECU to adjust on it's own.

Another possibility is a bum fuel injector. Just had that problem with my RS with one spraying way too much fuel. Ended up saturating the cat.

First and foremost, reset your ECU. Brought about 40 miles per tank for me.
