Question to the Gurus,

I just finish my hybrid motor break-in.

While changing the oil I notice some oil residue around the bolts holding the oil pan (2.0 pan). I cleaned out the area. 2 days later I see the oil again.

I'm a little confused to either replacing the 2.0 pan or get a sti pan? also what parts would I need?

I never had any issues with the 2.0 pan. Please help me decide.

Thanks.

STI pan + dipstick + pickup + baffle. Use WRX dipstick tube.

STi pan is better for performance driving. For track you may want to consider an aftermarket solution

06+ is a little bit better than the 05-05 STi Pan

Part numbers look right but you'll need a dipstick tube too, and not a a bad idea to replace the dipstick tube o-rings. The local hardware store should have these much cheaper than the factory pieces and they work just as well

Oh, and if you're going to keep the car for more than 30K miles after replacing the OEM pick up tube please beware of the failures that occur with this part. As you can imagine the results from such a failure are nearly always catostrophic. SEE PICS HERE.

And by the way maybe you also know dipstick tube PN for STi oil pan?

Seems like you've found where to find it before I could answer

Not sure on the part number for the dipstick tube, but any dealer should be able to find that out for you.

The STI dipstick tube doesn't fit on the WRX though, and the dipstick actually reads the exact same level regardless of which tube you use. Am I missing something?

Are you certain? I have both setups and they seem to fit on the EJ25 longblock no problem.

There is a thread around here somewhere that has pictures of the different dipsticks and dipstick tubes.

I meant that too. The EJ20 setup I have (older 2.0 WRX) fits my EJ25 longblock.

The bracket is slightly different and the length from the bracket to the top end (where the dipstick goes in) is different. From the bracket down, they are identical. Maybe there was a part change mid year that I'm unaware of?

So after spinning a rod bearing on a 2.5 hybrid setup (after spirited curvy road driving, aka Tail of the Dragon) I'll be replacing my oil pan with an 06+ STI oil pan... I'm also planning on the Cosworth baffle plate to ensure that doesn't happen again!

Are you aware of any fitment issues with using your pickup, an STi pan and the Cosworth baffle?

Great thread!

I'm getting ready to change the oil pan on my 03 WRX so I can run ELH.

Do you have a part # on the 06+ dip stick tube?

I would totally buy a Killerbmotorsport pickup if it was around $100 (which is still 4-5x higher then factory), but at $200 it's a tough buy.

This should be the part number for 06+ dipstick: 15144AA011

If you think $200 is a tough buy then you'd definitly not be happy about having to replace the shortblock (and more). It's cheap insurance if you look at it that way, and something you NEVER have to worry about again. I wish I could sell them for less, but it's a VERY robust design with features no one else offers and I wouldn't make any money selling them for $100. Pictures don't do the part justice. Hold one in your hands and it becomes immediately undestood that you can tow you car with this part.

And if cost is THAT much of an issue (you're not the only one that's cheap on here) I'll tell you what I tell them. Replace the OEM pickup every 26K miles and you'll be set. I have no documented failures before then and at ~$20 a pickup you can do it many times over the life of the car and spend less than the cost of my ultimate pickup.

Here are the 3 pans. OK, 4 pans, had to give myself a shameless plug

Obviously the WRX pan is flat bottomed and not as deep, vs the STi pans that form a closer fitting 'tub around the pickup. This gives the oil less pleces to slosh around to, and keeps the oil level higher on the pickup during operation.

Top Left: Killer B Motorsport Oil Pan

Top Right: OEM 2002-2005 EJ20 WRX Oil Pan Subaru number 11109AA053

Bottom Right: OEM 06+ EJ25 Impreza WRX/STi (STi, Legacy GT & Forester XT) Subaru number 11109AA151

Bottom Left: OEM 04-05 EJ25 Impreza STi (Legacy GT & Forester XT) Subaru number 11109AA131

As most of us know, the STi pan can be used mith many more header setups do to the kicked-in feature.

The dipstick location and angle, shape, length etc. is the same on all pans. This is the little tube ON the pan. The only difference is the length of the tube that the dipstick sits in. It's different on the EJ20 vs EJ25. That's why if you just change the dipstick when swapping to an STi pan your readings are off. I'm not entirely certain if the brackets on the dipstick tubes are the same (I'd think they would be), but swapping dipstick AND pan should give proper readings.

On to the baffling... You can see the WRX baffles have fewer passages and 2 levels of baffles. The STi pan has a much more clear flow path. Keep in mind one of the achilies to the Suby lubrication system isn't oil control IN the pan, it's GETTIN the oil to the pan quickly as it flows back from the heads. It doesn't do you much good to have good oil control in the bottom of the pan if the oil isn't getting there.

A lot of the perimiter of the WRX top baffle is sealed to the sides. On the STi pan almost the whole perimiter of the top baffle has a flow through gap. Also tough to see in this picture is that the lip around the baffles (upper and lower) pickup hole is curled up. This forces the oil to one of the hols in the baffle instead of going right down the middle.

Here's another shot of the EJ20 double level baffle. It's tough to tell by this picture but it's mostly sealed around the edges. The flow through path takes many direction. I'd be willing to bet, because most of the sides are sealed on the lower level, that under hard accel, decel, & corners that you can pool oil in some locations between the 2 baffles.

In case anyone cares, the weights go something like this: EJ20-heaviest, 04-05 EJ25 next, 06+ EJ25 a little lighter and the killer B Oil pan a little lighter than the 06+. This picture shows the 04-05 & 06+ EJ25 pans. IMO the 06+ is a better choice, because it leaves half as much oil in the pan when you do an oil change, it's lighter, and the baffling is slightly better (although I'm probably splitting hairs here). Just an FYI on the 04-05 pan there is 1/4 quart that doesn't come out during an oil change and a baffle around the inside of the drain plug so you can't pump it out.

Something else to note is that the baffle tray (sheetmetal piece that bolts to the bottom fo the block) should also be changed when doing an oil pan swap. They are cheap, and specifically designed to work with each pan.

Hope this helps

Just to add a footnote here. For those of you running JDM setups anything goes as far as what pan/dipstick tube/dipstick you've got in there. Safe bet is if you're going to a STi (or 06+ EJ25) pan is get the other stuff too.

I've got a JDM 2.0 STi with an EJ257 block + pan but 2.0 dipstick + tube. I knew something was off after the first oil change. Car reads full after only 4 qts. I've just been adding 4.5qt on changes and then adding another half qt anytime the reading drops close to the F mark.

I just received my new dipstick+tube. Can I change the tube with the pan full or should I wait until the next oil change? I noticed the tube hole on the pan sits fairly high. I guess I'll just wait until the next change. In the meantime I'll try just the dipstick and see how that changes readings.

Not to get off topic, but has anyone looked at the oil pan on the 2010 legacy?
