I'm reminded of the pep talk Duke gives in Rocky VI: "To beat this guy you need speed. You don't have it".

Maybe the 2015-2016 STI's were just better with less decoration and simplicity.

Even the refresh models are showing slower acceleration times than the earlier STI's..

other odd trends in recent memory that have (mostly) died off:
duck calls on BOV or exhaust
truck nuts
bosozoku and other JDM trends, but roughly 5 years after they happened in Japan

No only salt and spray. I suppose if one is in CO they do use rocks. That could make sense to have. But still ugly.

The low quality salt they use in NY state is most definitely adulterated with rocks and ****.

The additional weight of the larger wheels likely play a role in the slower times as the EJ257 isn't really a strong engine by today's standards.

Me and an average of a windshield every other year would disagree with you. No I'm not following to close, our roads are just crappy & riddled with debris, and people love ride height.

Mudflaps should be mandated on anything with ground clearance or 5.9" or greater.

I agree they are not "useless"; but, I'll spend more money for other options.....maybe clear bra the whole side.....before putting those ugly things on a "tarmac" set up. Now, If I got crazy and set my car up like a gravel rally car setup, then duh....

One of those options is significantly cheaper than the other. Some places you can get away with neither, others it's a good idea to have one or the other.

Cobb announced tuning support for the S209 today. They're only offering a Stage 1 OTS 93 octane map.

https://www.cobbtuning.com/2019-suba...uning-support/

Quote:
The COBB OTS Map availability for the S209 is a bit different than our typical WRX or STI assortment. With a limited number of cars available to be used for testing, and based on our findings, the only performance map offered at this time is a Stage 1 OTS map for 93 octane fuel. During investigation and development of this map, our calibration team noted that even utilizing the factory calibration with 93 octane fuel, the S209 exhibited an inconsistent and undesirable amount of knock. As you can see in the graph below, power sometimes suffered significantly on the factory calibration, so we were forced to end pulls early, prior to hitting the factory rev limiter. We were able to mitigate most of the undesirable activity in the Stage 1 93 map file and carry power out much more consistently up top, but did not attempt to achieve similar results using 91 octane fuel.

The Red (Run 1) and Green (Run 2) pulls represent power utilizing the factory calibration on two separate days. The temperature difference was about 40 degrees Fahrenheit (40F vs 80F) between the two days and that difference made a significant impact in overall power. Power gains as tested were 7-15% for both horsepower and torque.
I'd hate to own a S209 in a warmer climate with only 91 octane fuel available. I can only imagine how it would perform on a 100+ degree, hot summer day here in California on 91 ACN. They couldn't even take it to redline on the stock tune without experiencing power loss due to knock.. even in 40 degree weather.

Yup. Unfortunately, EJ257s have been knocking on 91 ACN from day one. It just got worse over time as Subaru made changes to try and meet emissions requirements.
Basically, for us on 91 ACN, on the streets, we have to use flex fuel setups or water/meth injection setups just to make the *rated* power.
At the track, it's easier, fill up with half a tank of 100 or 110 AKI unleaded and knock should go away.

EDIT: but, then again, my opinion is that, if I have to spend $40+K OTD on a brand new car, I shouldn't need to jeopardize my factory powertrain warranty just to make the engine run right.
That makes no sense.
A used and older vehicle? Sure, why not.

Exactly. And now it even knocks on 93 in their $65k halo car.

But we already knew that Subaru has issues with their stock tunes I guess the S209 is no different.

It's tough to look at those curves and not get a bad taste in your mouth. The general reason why aftermarket tuning makes more power than stock is because OEMs tune their cars with excess safety - so that a car will run decently under the worst real world conditions that it could possibly face.

It's not clear that S209 could survive even a single summer HPDE event at Willow Springs on its stock tune. Subaru did such a half assed job on this "racecar for the street."
