Default Keeping your meat safe....the good kind

What combo's of wheel gap and spring rate would keep me from having to hack my fender's up to keep from rubbing with 285's next year (2004 STi w/2005 hubs).

I have read people with 600lb rates are still claiming they are getting 2 inches of travel. That's too much wheel gap for me to be happy with. But obviously too much spring affecting the handling matters too. I have 600/500 springs right now and I was thinking of snagging some 550's and 650's to play with next year.

So. Is there a way to do it? Or should I just get ready to hack some fenders. Also, for those that have done it, is there any helpful hints? Like pieces inside the fender to avoid cutting. Or how much do I actually need to cut.

I already can guess hoppe's answer will be something like this but I'd like to hear from him anyways.
1) get a hack saw
2) cut fenders
3)....
4) Profit?

just kidding tom.

Do it the old fashioned way, roll fenders with a baseball bat.

With my fenders I've run as low as 650# springs up front (with the 32mm Strano bar). I've never rubbed, but I saw a number of pictures that looked like I was getting close to it.

OMG - HA...LOL....I have one like this from this year that's scary..

This was with 7k/5k springs at the beginning of the season on a badly slanted lot but I am running higher stuff since then. I want to play around with the rates next year so I will probably order some more hyper-coils from Sam. Needless to say I threw in new fender liners before thanksgiving.

I'll pm you about some detailed questions I have. Right now I plan on booking from work. ttyl.

IMHO, the fronts will need to be cut either way you go (Hey, we happen to have a MINT set of front fenders already cut in crystal grey fo sale) but the rears will be fine.

My rears are fine with 275's and flares. I don't see how 285's would present a problem, especially since the 18's (that I assume you're using) are smaller in diameter.

My front fenders are stock. What's the problem there? Seems like 285's would work with stiff springs. They'd certainly be close, though.

From the pics I've seen on Joel's car mid corner, the front leans enough to rub on the tires with steering input. Of course its different with every application. We cut ours, but that was when we planned to run 315s.

I would try everything with no cutting if you have a real suspension, and then possibly cut the fronts.

Mine doesn't rub, but only because the fronts are cut. Even with stiff springs I think cutting is needed in the front unless you want to run the car at higher-than-ideal ride height. I think you could get away with not cutting the rear if it was stiffly sprung.

Oh the fenders. I wanna sell em, I just don't want to ship them if possible. The wrapping, packing, etc to not damage them will be a pain in the ass.

Sorry, again, as usual my engrish sucks.
