I'm an advisor

Had a customer call today:

Customer: I have a 2004 Isuzu Ascender and I know there is a recall on my vehicle for a gas cap issue

ME: Well, I've never heard of one. Where did you get the information?

Customer: The internet. I've been doing research on it for a while now. It's TSB # XXXXXXXXX

ME: Well, that TSB is not a recall and does not pertain to a gas cap issue, but rather an issue with a possible crank on the fuel filler valve. It's not a recall, but a warranty extension if you have the issue. What's the problem with your car?

Customer: Well, my check engine light keeps coming on and I keep replacing the gas cap and resetting the light by disconnecting the battery. After a few days, it comes back on.

ME: Have you ever had the code pulled for the check engine light?

Customer: No.

ME: How do you know it's an issue with the gas cap?

Customer: Because every time I replace the gas cap and reset the light it stays off for a few days.

ME: Are you using an OEM cap?

Customer: Well, I got it from Chevy. Technically this vehicle is a GM
(NOTE: which is true)

ME: The first thing you need to do is get the code pulled. We charge $45.00. That will tell you what is wrong and why the light keeps coming back on. Autozone will do it for free, and if you call me back with the code, I can lead you in the right direction. This way you are not throwing parts at it for no reason.

Customer: So I can't get a new gas cap for free? It's not a recall?

ME: (Reading word for word the customer letter he says he never got)....No, it's not a recall, but a warranty extension and you have to have a fuel smell and a leak.

Customer: Oh, ok.

ME: Get the code pulled and call me back.

Customer: Ok thanks....bye.

****Phone rings again about 10 minutes later****

Customer: I think I just talked to you about the gas cap recall on my car? Yeah, well, do you know how much a new gas cap is??

I wanted to reach thru the phone and smack him!! (Yes, this was a male)

I was commercial manager at autozone for awhile, but i would still help out in the front. One time a dude came in furious and threw a Duralast battery on the counter, exclaiming "Y'all sold me a DEAD BATTERY!" Needless to say, he was pissed, so I calmly went over and talked to him, and noticed the black plastic thing that covers the negative terminal was still on there. I asked, "Sir, did you take this off before installing the battery?"
He turned beet red and quickly apologized for freaking out, haha.

I deliver auto parts to shops but I can't say i've seen too many things like this. Most of the shops I go to are European shops. People seem to have more money and a little more sense. Although I did come across a blown engine in an 04 Benz. It was a car her husband bought her. Total clueless stuck up bitch. Thought putting STP gas treatment in her oil would help her gas mileage cause "there's oil and gas in the engine."

I wish the Internet wasn't around for certain customers. They get the code for autozone, look up and find someone saying it is this part, buy said part then want it installed. So we will go ahead and do that but usually a) their diagnosis they "found" on the Interwebs sucks b) they bought the worst POS part.

And when we put said part in and it doesn't fix the issue they claim we installed it wrong lol.

I'm glad I don't have to deal with customers all the time because honestly some of them would drive me bat **** crazy.

Or my favorite is you charge for diagnostic, but does that get applied to my repair... Uh no I have to pay the tech to look at it why would I do it for free (I mean I can hide it in the repair but that's shady)

That's like asking a doctor to check you out for free. Your paying a professional for their diagnosis. Just the things that go through people's heads sometimes. Sorry rant but I delt with 8 billion idiots today zzz

My favorite today "You did B repair now Z doesn't work" its all your fault" this is 6 months after we last saw the car. In no way shape or form is replacing a fuel pump related to her car leaking coolant lol.

This week must be special because the amount of stuff in the shop is full of stupid including a repair this "cheap repair" place did

other shop replaced the oil pan but don't know how to use silicon lol

Engine is running rough at idle

Quality battery tie down

Guy comes in and wants a full inspection on his vehicle says he just got it not to long ago and it is doing some weird things. Brakes don't work well was one of those things... well I wonder why

Enjoy! lol

Not really a dumb customer story, but I used to have a 4x4 Nissan truck and one day I decided to adjust the torsion bars because the front was noticeably lower than the rear. Everything went well. Probably about a year later, I was under the truck again (forget why) and I noticed that I had left my wrench (big too, I think it was like 22mm) on the nut part of the adjusting bolt for the torsion bar. I rolled out from under the truck and asked my cousin "Remember when we adjusted the torsion bars...?"

That'a surprising it was still there and you didn't lose it.

I took my A4 in because the turn signals quit working. The techs told me it was a bad stalk, yet the cruise control, lights, and brights still worked. They wanted $550 to fix it.

So I go online and do some research, turns out there's a module behind the hazards button in the center of the dash that sometimes needs the contacts cleaned and distance adjusted. I pulled it out, cleaned the contacts on the turn signal, and increased the distance between the contacts, popped it back in, and now it works just fine.

Total labor 15 minutes, parts $0.

But techs know everything right?

The repair video I followed.

Good techs that go to training will, and that hazard switch is a common failure item... I'm surprised they didn't start there... I would have.

Just wait till that thing starts chirping, because it will lol.

The reviews of the shop must not be very good and technically if they charged you that and didn't fix the problem you don't have to pay it according to a certain law

So these two are from last week and I forgot to upload them
They are from a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 6.7L Diesel that came in for clutch repair

Got the tranny off and the smell was horrid. If you ever wondered what happens when a clutch disk blows up from torque well here you go

The clutch was fairly knew, but this company we do work for rents out trucks to oil rigs. They overload the trucks and then drop the clutch to get things moving sometimes.

$3.581.72 later the clutch is fixed, and the output and input shafts on the tranny and transfer case are fixed.

Isn't that their job? I'm not going to bribe someone to do their job properly.

Don't get me wrong .. I have a friendly relationship with my tuner / mechanic and we treat each other with respect .. but I'm not going to drop to my knees and offer favours just so he'll do his job.

He does his job and he does it very well ... as a result, I keep bringing my car back and paying him to work on it.

Great thread. I have more faith in independent shops than dealer service centers.

I spent $50 for Fairway Subaru to "diagnose" an ABS issue (the ABS motor would engage sometimes during a slow speed stop). I couldn't get any ABS codes to show so I gave in an took it to them. They tell me I need to replace the whole solenoid/ motor assy for around $500 I believe. Turns out an axle nut had backed off and the distance to the tone ring was fluctuating and causing the ABS problem. Hooray dealership

Well in all fairness to the dealership, that part would have been replaced and tightened when they did their work and fixed your problem.

And probably would have rounded heads of bolts off again like they did replacing my input shaft, and apparently losing part of my exhaust

Used to deal with Saabs, they sludge a lot, engine cleaner will never work on sludge. Engine has to be dismantled and oil passages cleared out if any chance of recovery.

I didn't pay it. I ended up paying for a diagnostic and AC recharge, but the total repair bill was going to be around 6K, that's just part of the issues.

I've decided to fix everything they have listed on their estimate sheet by myself. We were going to just junk the car and buy something else, but I decided that if we can't get an STI(which we can't afford at the moment considering we just bought a house) I'll work on the car as much as possible, save money, and learn something useful.

Get rid of the Audi and buy a cheap used subaru with the money. You will thank yourself later. There is a reason that an independent BMW, Volvo, Audi, VW shop up here that is smaller than us turns 6 figure profits in a year.

PS any used car you think of buy get it checked out for 75-100 by a good well reviewed shop. Good piece of mind and can help you haggle the price.

A bunch are, some are from friends that are techs at other shops. This week has been especially full of stupid.

Actually have a Subaru I'm working on that's driving me nuts. Has a slight rough idle only seems to be noticeable around 1,000-800 rpm but you don't notice it in gear or park. Sets no codes, fuel trim numbers are fine, timing looks fine. Still a puzzle to me but I like puzzles
