Default Mercedes-Benz SL63 and SL65 AMG Video is Stunning

Quote:
As if either really need extra promotion, Mercedes-Benz recently launched another promotional video for its SL63 and SL65 AMG roadsters.

Boasting a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 and twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 respectively, both cars have serious power with 590 hp and 621 hp respectively. There’s really no question that either car is an impressive performer, which makes it all the more fun to watch them wind around twisty switchbacks and rocket through straightaways.

It’s true that the SL63 and SL65 aren’t worlds apart in terms of acceleration, horsepower or really anything on the spec sheet aside from price, but Mercedes made it clear during the SL65 AMG’s New York unveil that the V12 isn’t meant to massively outperform. Instead, it offers a more refined, smoother driving experience.

In the video below we get to see both of the venerable Benzes rocketing around two-lane roads, at times simultaneously. The drivers overtake each other in what could possibly be the world’s classiest game of leap frog before the clip fades away to deliver basic engine specs.
Check out the video below.

Really? Both are beasts, with the 65 being even more so, but its 738 lb-ft is very difficult to fully exploit. I love its sound though. Assuming I could afford either of them but not quite with the comfort of not worrying about money at all, I'd rather just get the 63 instead and keep the difference. It's already more powerful than the old non-AMG 600 motor (twin-turbo V-12).

The video was cool though... the cars were both pretty flat when cornering. It seems like they did a good job engineering them (especially since they're lighter than the previous generation), though it's too bad that they don't look the part.

When my balls go gray, I'll consider an SL.

I would think they are gray already, considering you drive a 911 (that was for the chick car comment)

Wrinkled yes, gray not quite yet - I'm sure they will be soon though - guess it's a sign when I actually like the new Bentley

As for chick cars... I was going to send you a set of truck nutz for the Cayman, but thought you could switch cars with your GF instead!!!

Being able to get to 1000ft/lb of torque from basic bolt on's is insane. A tune on a 65 nets 80hp/100tq gain.

Stock it's a high 11 second car trapping at 120mph; where the 63 traps about 10mph slower. In the world of aftermarket, the 55 is more sought after for power gains than the 63. The 63 is a good option if you have zero plans to modify the car.
That sounds like you're talking about the old, naturally aspirated 63s. The new ones are 5.5L TT V8s and very tuneable.

I was thinking the same thing. But whiteout was correct about the 63s being a good option if you just wanted to keep it stock. It's still plenty torquey, just not compared to the other AMG motors with forced induction of some sort. But I do enjoy how it revs to 7200 rpm... one of my clients had picked up a C63 (the least powerful of the cars with the M156 engine, I might add), and that one was plenty.
