Anyone see a 2.5 shortblock with 2.0 heads and TD04 or similar?
I'm curious about the effects of changing a mostly stock 2.0L wrx setup to a 2.5L shortblock, while retaining the stock sized turbo...
I have to build a motor soon and I don't plan on building for a lot of power (100k on this 5mt, don't wanna bust it yet...)...and I have an STi swapped GC already...no need for two...yet. I'm currently N/A and wanna keep the swap on the cheap side, as I'm saving for a house. I really only care about low end torque. I was thinking big block, small turbo. Thoughts? -- Dave |

I had a full EJ257 longblock with a td04. Super responsive, no top-end. My top-end was actually not bad with all things considering, but I did have an equal length header and an EWG. IWG td04 plus the 2.5l = low boost or = boost creep.

I have a stock turbo (until the 18G goes in). As previously said, super responsive.....no top end. Power drops after about 5,800.

Hey lads, not to be a total dink but there are quite a few threads on this. Just search around a little and you'll find em. Search for my name as I have posted in most and got in trouble from Unabomber for doing so. lol
Basically, there are 3 options: 1. STI SB (either stock pictons or new forged) with WRX heads 2. STI LB with WRX intake manifold (need Hydra to run the AVCS) 3. Full STI LB swap with DBW throttle and STI wiring harness (BIG PITA) |

You would get full spool by what like 2000 rpm's. Monster off the line.

thats my set up right now. the car is insane off the line. ifi auto crossed it would be perfect for it. i hit peak boost 16 psi at 2400 rpm. definitely a fun car in the twisties gets ya out of the corners really quick. but like others said it runs out of breath starting at about 5000 rpm i usually shift right before 6000 rpm. it made a lot better numbers than i though it would on th edyno. 260 whp 304wtq.

I'm going to have to replace the wiring anyways, as I'm going from N/A to turbo, so new ECU/etc... I'll stay tuned for more info. Thanks! -- Dave |

VF39 will spool almost as good and will give you power all the way to 6000 rpm. That's what I'm going with. JC

On that note, if you compare the 39 to the 18G, the spoolup is almost identical, with an even better topend. In the i-speed dyno runs, the 18G actually hits a higer peak boost sooner than the VF39.

Umm, nope. Look again. You may have been looking at the VF34. The VF39 peaks in the low 3's whereas the 18g peaks in the high 3's (based on the TQ curves, not the HP curves). But look at all the VF39 TQ around 2500 rpm... 260+ ft-lbs as compared to the 18g's 210 at that rpm. 18g is always gonna have top end on a VF39 but for sure the VF39 spools better/earlier and has a better bottm end. And, it doesn't give up that much on the top either. For rallyX and autoX, I'll sacrifice the top end. And on the street, I'll rarely ever use that kind of power.

In terms of the individual plots, could some of that lag be due to the frontmount on the 18g setup, vs. the topmount on the VF39? I guess the question is which of the graphs best represent the respective power curves? |

I ran 2.5 w/ TDo4 for about 10k mi. The low end torque is amazing. The car pretty much falls flat after 5500rpm. I really did like the setup though. I ran about 20 psi and can't recall driving a car with the much low end respone. Step on the gas and your at full boost. PM me if I can help at all

I would highly recommend an EWG with this setup.

Yea i was going to say.... hell if you thinking about a 18G you have gone to big and now you should just throw a 20g or bigger.

This "Hybrid" swap is made all the time. I would recommend a larger turbo, your OEM turbo wont last very long, unless you set boost limits low... then whats the point of the swap.

I dunno if this will be good on your 2.5RS tranny tho. Thats a lot of tq. Mostly why all the 2.5RS-T folk blow their trannies IIRC. Just has crazy tq that just get poured on immediately. With the 4.11 gears tho it will be a force to be reckoned with.
