Thumbs up Herb Gordon Subaru - Silver Spring MD - good experience

Thought I would post a positive experience I had when I purchased my 2004 STi recently. I went to the Subaru NA website and emailed several dealerships. All replied and the responses were varied. They provided an interesting insight in how some dealerships think consumers are uninformed. This was evidenced by the MSRP responses and over MSRP responses . One was even rude enough that I forwarded my disgust to Subaru NA dealer relations along with the email. This route proved quite effective with an official apology and the dealership having a note in their file (or so I was told) This surprised me somewhat as I would have thought they would know an internet shopper is going to be a tad more informed than the average walk-in. I don't take well to rudeness whether it be in person or over email when I am a customer looking to spend almost $30,000.

By far the best response was from Herb Gordon Subaru in Silver Spring MD and Marlena Mangan (their internet sales manager). The entire process was done over the internet, fax, and phone due to my schedule at the time (never set foot in the dealership). I paid a fair amount under MSRP with no long negotiations at all. She kept me in the loop through out the lengthy process (lengthy due to my inability to be there in person), met my requests such as mounting snows tires I had shipped from Tire Rack directly to the dealership, making sure the white paint protection film remained on, faxing documents long distance to myself and insurance, etc. This was time consuming but everything went smooth. She was very familiar with the entire process, my particular insurance company, and knowledgable about the car. Anway, I had a great buying experience there and thought I would share it. If you are local to the area or not, they are worth contacting

I bought my 04 WRX from Marlena back in June. Everything went very smoothly and I would recommend Marlena to anyone looking to buy a Subaru. Although I do have mixed feelings about the service department. The first 2 times I went in they treated me like a uninformed kid (I'm 20) and didn't even fix the couple problems I had with the car. But the last 2 times I went I used a little bit more force and made them know that they couldn't treat me like a spoiled brat and they fixed the stuff. And I know that they wouldn't do any warranty work if I had mods done.

Glad you had a good experience in MD
I never tried Herb Gordon Subaru, but I couldn't get Jones Subaru(also in MD) to go much below $31k. I ended up contacting an out of state dealer who was advertising on ebay. I did the same long distance thing you did and managed to buy the car for less than invoice
They also appraised my trade over the internet and gave me more than my local dealer
Overall it was a good experience. The drive was long, but I saved $3k

I just got myself a WRX Wagon from Herb Gordon last tuesday night (4 days ago). Absolutely love the car, of course.

I worked with Iris Harley over e-mails, and got information for the car I wanted without a visit or phone call. I dropped by the dealership when I was ready to buy virtually unannounced, and she was polite, pleasant, and the test drive experience was great, she offered it before I could even ask. The other staff was all equally kind and helpful. I was very pleased with the lack of pushyness, and yet I found them very eager to answer my questions.

The experience was fabulous, much better than I got from other dealerships I had contacted, some in maryland, some in michigan (I just moved from there). The guaranteed "no haggle" internet pricing on their website was accurate (I was expecting some kind of trick, heh), and I came away extremely satisfied with the pricing. Financing was smooth and pain-free, and the finance guy was great. They even let me get online there to complete and print out proof of insurance from my provider.

All in all, it was a great experience for me. The whole purchase went very smoothly, and they even stayed late to help me get done that night. I was very impressed.

I'll try to post some follow up on the service side of things once I have some experience with that side of things. I plan to use them to service the car at least until the warranty ends, if not longer. I did also get a call today (can't remember the name) from one of the service people to ask how my experience had gone, and even if it's nothing too spectacular, I'm always impressed with follow up. With any luck, their service will be as good as their sales !

I'd recommend these guys for new purchases if you're in the area.

I had a coolant hose leak and needed to get my cruise control cable clip TSB fixed so I took my car in to Herb Gordon this morning.

Scott in the service department was great to deal with and although they didn't really have to do any work to the car, there was no mention of me having to pay for anything and their turn around time was fast. They also didn't say anything about my mechanical modifications to the car which is always a plus.

Never purchased a vehicle form Herb Gordon but a friend of mine is one of the serice dept. managers.

Had an alignment done and was happy with it.

The alignment machine is nice, and they also have a hunter tire mount machine and a road force balancer if anyone needs proper mounting/balancing.

I was about to purchase my limited from marlena as well until another dealership matched the price and was 2 hours closer. But anyways, Marlena was very nice and i believe it would have been a good buying experience there as well. It was all conducted over the internet until the finalizations which was done by phone. So if youre looking for a car, dont hesitate to contact Marlena!

I had a great experiance when buying my 06 wrx ltd from Herb Gordon. The salesmans name escapes me but he was an older tall guy. I probaly spent of total of 40 mins doing paperwork from the time we sat down till the time I drove off the lot. No headaches no hassle no price changes. They gave me what I thought was a good price right off the bat without having to go back and fourth. I will be buying my STI from them if the experiance is the same, and the GF will be getting her legacy there as well.
