Default How important is the placement of power steering line behind the grill

Ive been doing some cleaning up of the engine bay and have decided to remove the hardline from the powersteering line which goes behind the front grill.

I have then routed the shorter lines to the resivoir inside the engine bay.

How critical is that hardline behind the grill in terms of temperature cooling?? I.e is it essential??

is there a one way valve in those lines?if so where is it??

Are you sure you aren't talking about the AC lines Tino?

The only hard PS line comes off the high pressure side of the PS pump and goes above the head and back to the steering rack. This can certainly be replaced with $80 worth of Summit fittings as seen here:

It's definately from the power steering line. It's a bent hard line which sits behind the grill for cooling of the fluid. Just wondering if it's essential?

I've still got the hard lines that sit in the engine bay. I'm just extending the rubber hose off the resivior and removing that hardline behind the grill.

Im assuming there must have been some sort of production change in 04, maybe soon after the first run of sti's?

This^

I have the jdm PS tank and cooler. I would keep it if you do any hard street driving or tracking. Subies heat up their ps fluid and blow their racks often at autox and track events.

Older GC models STi's also had them fitted.
Because of the quicker steering rack the oil heats up more.

I am guessing the JDM/AU models have a quicker steering rack then the EUDM/USDM models, so FHI decided to fit this cooler.
I can't say I've seen them on the EUDM models either.

I think that is the best option.
I believe FHI only sells a complete set, with the tank and all in it.

They don't sell replacement hardlines i think, and the price of the complete set is nothing short of amazing.

You make it sound like you could buy an engine swap for less than the PS setup!

I've seen the price for a GC STI PS cooler setup, and that worked out to about 800$, without install, quoted froma shop which has very low pricing.

A bit steep for 3 feet of copper/steel pipe, and a different lid on the PS reservoir.

Just saw this thread:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1769142

That guy has a JDM power steering line. Definitely not on the USDM cars. Yours is either a cooler, or simply a placeholder so they woulnd't have to change supporting hardware.

GC8 STI's have the same cooler as the first one.
This one is just another version of it, with more cooling capacity addes by the spiralled metal.

Both are functioning oilcoolers.

I drove an XT6 that had Power Anti-Assist. You would turn the wheel so far, then the power steering would start to work against any more movement of the wheel. It took like 12x the effort to turn past that point that a non-assist car would require while stopped, and that was while it was moving.

I'm gonna get a quickrack when my steering rack goes out, if it ever goes out.

Does anyone have an engine pic of what this adds on the engine bay side? I want one of these, but not at the expense of clutering up the bay.
