The 2010 Legacy/Outback debuted an engine-cradle arrangment. The engine cradle was meant to offer modularity as to which Subaru engine fits in that chassis.

There is pretty much a ZERO percent chance that the '10 Legacy Engine cradle design was designed to preclude the FB engine fitment, as the FB engine was on the docket for 2011, in the Forester, and has been planned to entirely replace the EJ engine line.

The FB25 Forester uses the age-old Subaru 5-speed manual, and 4-speed auto... it bolts to the same transmissions. It bolts to the same engine mounts, and is likely designed for easy use with the engine cradle, as mentioned.
The engine cradle was more for the transmission. The CVT is considerably larger than the other transmissions. It also allowed better engine mount placement for less vibration.

Autoblog has details about the 2013 Legacy, Outback models:

Quote:
Subaru has a lot riding on the 2012 New York Auto Show. In addition to the XV Crosstrek, the Japanese automaker will show off its new 2013 Legacy and Outback models, and these aren't exactly minor updates.

Under the hood of 2.5i models will be a brand-new 2.5-liter DOHC boxer four that puts out 173 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque - improvements of three and four, respectively. Furthermore, the 2013 Legacy's new engine and the latest version of Subaru's CVT automatic gearbox achieve estimated fuel economy ratings of 24 miles per gallon city, 32 highway and 27 combined. That's one mile per gallon better across the board, and a six-speed manual will also be available.

The Outback, which boasts 8.7 inches of ground clearance, will manage an estimated 24/30/26 mpg with the same drivetrain. Both models will be available with an optional 3.6-liter flat-six engine mated to a five-speed automatic that offers up 256 horsepower. All-wheel drive is, of course, standard.

Subaru's new EyeSight driver-assist system, which integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning, will debut on the 2013 Legacy and Outback, and you can read plenty more about this technology here. Bluetooth connectivity is also new, along with iPod controls and a USB port. A seven-inch navigation screen will be optional on top-end models.

Styling is tweaked a bit, with a new front fascia standing out as the most obvious change, and Subaru claims that the ride and handling have been improved thanks to a stiffer structure and revised suspension geometry. We'll be sure to bring you live photos from New York, but in the meantime, check out the few shots released so far and the official press blasts for both models after the break.

So is the brand new engine the same one that is used in the new Forester, or the old one just updated?

Now that it looks somewhat ok they discontinue the only model I'd buy. Should have dropped in the STI motor and 6spd and tweaked the suspension and brakes. I'm sure it was a tough sell for a performance car that is overpowered by Sonatas and Camrys.

News Subaru Press Release

Subaru Press Release....

Quote:
  • New BOXER® engine with higher power and better efficiency
  • Up to 30 mpg highway with standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
  • New second-generation Lineartronic® CVT
  • Redesigned front styling
  • Smoother, quieter ride
  • New convenience and audio features
  • Available EyeSight™ driver-assist system with:
    - Pre-Collision Braking
    - System Capable of Pedestrian Detection
    - Lane Departure and Sway Warning
    - Adaptive Cruise Control

Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that it will introduce the 2013 Outback models at the New York International Auto Show. The 2013 Outback is powered by a new, more efficient powertrain and debuting the new EyeSight driver-assist system and features revised styling. Chassis enhancements improve both ride quality and agility in the 2013 Outback, which also offers new amenities and audio/infotainment capabilities.

The 2013 Outback features a restyled front end, with new headlights, grille, front bumper, and fog lights, for a more powerful appearance. Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive distinguishes the Outback from crossover competitors, which generally offer all-wheel drive as an extra-cost option. Numerous enhancements to the body structure, suspension, and steering give the Outback an even smoother and quieter ride for 2013; while also helping increase handling agility. Body roll has been reduced by up to 40 percent.

The Subaru Outback provides the crisp car-like handling with the versatility of an SUV. The 8.7 inches of ground clearance is higher than for many large SUVs and crossovers while maintaining a low step-in height.

Up to 30 MPG

The 2013 Outback 2.5i models debut a new double-overhead-cam (DOHC) 2.5-liter FB series Boxer engine for increased performance and fuel efficiency. The new engine produces 173 hp and 174 lb.-ft. of torque, compared to 170 hp and 170 lb.-ft. with the previous engine. More significant is that the new engine produces greater low-end torque across a broad speed range, making the 2013 Outback 2.5i models more responsive in everyday driving.

Outback 2.5i and 2.5i Premium models offer a choice between a standard six-speed manual transmission and the second-generation Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission); the latter is standard on 2.5i Limited. Models with the CVT also feature a 6-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters, which allow the driver to control the transmission via six pre-set ratios. Outback 3.6R models continue with a 256-horsepower 3.6-liter six-cylinder BOXER engine and five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.

Official EPA fuel economy figures are not yet available, but Subaru projects that the 2013 Outback 2.5i with the Lineartronic CVT will achieve 24-mpg city/30 mpg highway/26 mpg combined, up compared with the 22/29/24 for the 2012 model.

Subaru also projects that the 2013 Outback will achieve a 5-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The 2013 Outback models add a new Brake Override system.

New EyeSight Driver-Assist System

The 2013 Subaru Outback (and Legacy®) models debut Subaru's new EyeSight driver-assist system, which integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning. Projected to be one of the most affordable such technologies available in the U.S. market, EyeSight uses a stereo camera design developed by Subaru to provide a detection angle wider than that of radar-based systems.

Enhanced Interior Comfort and Convenience

New, more comfortable seat fabric, and a new light matte wood grain trim provide a sophisticated appearance. The Outback Limited models for 2013 offer a new Special Appearance Package option that provides a Keyless Access & Start system along with a two-position memory system for the already-standard 10-way power driver's seat. With the Keyless Access & Start system, the driver, while carrying the remote control in a pocket or purse, can unlock the car by touching the door handle button. The rear gate also has an unlock touch sensor.

Also in the Limited models, rear A/C outlets have also been added, and a new electro-luminescent instrument cluster integrates the 3.5-in. color screen for the multi-information display, which also shows EyeSight functions when the car is so equipped. The Outback was the first crossover to feature as standard factory-installed foldable roof crossbars. For 2013, a new adjustable design allows the rear crossbar to be moved further rearward to carry longer items such as kayaks or other outdoor gear.

Three Trim Levels

The 2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i models are available in three trim levels – base, Premium, and Limited. Outback 3.6R models will be offered in base and Limited. The base 2.5i features standard steering wheel cruise control and audio switches; a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat with recline feature; electronic parking brake with Hill Holder System; and an automatic headlight function. The standard audio system in the 2.5i model is upgraded for 2013 to now include Bluetooth® hands-free phone capability, audio streaming, iPod® control capability, and a USB charging port. The system continues with an AM/FM stereo, single disc CD player, Radio Data Broadcast System (RDBS), 3.5mm aux. input jack, and 4 speakers.

Outback Premium models add a 10-way power driver's seat; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter; body-colored side mirrors; 17-in. alloy wheels (all 3.6R trim lines have 17-in. alloy wheels as standard); and other amenities.

The Limited trim lines add to the Premium perforated leather upholstery; dual zone automatic climate control; the All-Weather Package that includes heated front seats and mirrors, and a windshield wiper de-icer (package optional for Premium); the harman/kardon Premium Audio Package (optional for Premium) with a 4.3-in. color display, 440-watt amplifier, nine harman/kardon premium speakers, and standard XM Satellite Radio® service (four-month free trial subscription included); rear A/C duct, electro-luminescent gauges, and a 4-way power front passenger seat. The Limited models also exclusively offer an available voice-activated GPS navigation system with a seven-in. LCD display, rear vision camera and XM NavTraffic® (with a four-month free trial subscription included), and an SD card slot for convenient navigation map updates, among other features.

Outback Premium and Limited models offer an available Power Moonroof Package with Rear Vision Camera that also includes an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with Homelink garage-remote function.

Subaru produces a full line of all-wheel drive sedans, crossovers, and SUVs; and for 2013 has also introduced the rear-wheel drive BRZ sports car to its portfolio.

I wonder if the US market is getting this and which models it will come in?

Meanwhile, General is crying that there isn't an STI with an automatic in the US.

The GT was a neat car, but didn't really sell in very significant numbers. It's too bad.

The car was never marketed properly. Subaru needs to pay the car magazines to do a Legacy GT vs 335xi vs S4 comparisons. It will lose them all overall, but it would get the word out that there is another option for a lot less.

At the very least, they need to get comparisons of all the new turbo-4's. LGT, A4, 328xi, Regal GS, etc etc etc.

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS!!!!!!!

It finally has a great distinctive look and they only powertrain I would entertain is gone!

I will admit though that the 3.6R may be worth a test drive. However, I just had the WONDERfUL experience of driving a brand spanking new 2012(2013?) 335i sedan. WOW. What a car.

I doubt the GT would have garnered much press attention this year anyway, what with highly anticipated release of the BRZ and all.

Question LED DRLs?

LED DRL's - no mention of it. So, I assume the "boomerang" is just a styling cue on Legacy/Outback headlights?

It looked nearly identical to the BRZ's in the spy pics. I bet they just didn't mention it in the press release.

I don't think the car was ever planned properly in the first place. It's got middle of the pack power, family sedan handling, class low MPG, only available with a rubbery manual tranny, and it looks homely. Who is this car aimed at? If you are going to build an enthusiast model then build it. It's like they planned a Camry SE competitor but decided to make it manual only. Who wants that?

At minimum they should have made a unique aggressive fascia, brembos, significantly stiffer suspension, faster steering ratio, and a standard short shifter. Then you would have a car that people might actually be interesting in buying without the expense of putting the STi drivetrain in. Which I still think they should have done. There is a bigger market for a poor man's S4/M5 than there is for a oddly pieced together family sedan. I'm sure they were trying to save money but they really just flushed all the GT development money down the toilet. I have no doubt that car wasn't profitable after development and certification cost.

Why would you want a 3.6R? It's not sporty. I could go buy a Chrysler 300 and it will have more room, nicer interior, better features, it's faster, and it gets significantly better gas mileage.

I'm sure the new 335i is awesome, probably even the 328i but I hate the eyebrow headlights.

Pretty much what JC said.

I've honestly always considered getting a GT, but they never quite tuned it correctly. Now that they've remedied most of the issues across the line, they discontinue it... I'm sorely disappointed. I think the GT had a LOT of potential and would have been excellent as a 2013 with the new front fascia and tweaked suspension (less body roll? Heck yeah!). Oh well. Subaru is weird. "Let's make the GT an Order Only item and not make it specific to the crowd that might want it anyways." They were 75% there!

I'll just get a used 2012 down the road.

FA/FB are replacing EJ only. H4 replacing H4. H6 is not being replaced.

When the 2010 Legacy GT lost amenities and got blander looking, compared to the 2009, let alone the Spec.B I knew it was a matter of time. With as limited production as the Legacy GT was... it could have been a Spec.B or near-STI level car for sport sedan enthusiasts, but it wasn't cast as such. The die was cast.

When the 2011/2012 Legacy GT became factory-order only, when it was previously VERY difficult to find in-stock, I knew the time was getting closer.

The time has happened, the Legacy GT is gone. It is sad, but it is not at all surprising.

Forester XT is a shadow of what it should be, anyway, and I wouldn't be surprised if it is on borrowed time, as well, as the EJ Turbo gets phased out trailing the EJ atmospheric engines being put to bed now. Whether that means a revamped FXT FA/FB based turbo engine in the future, or an EZ-based engine in the future, I don't know.

The next WRX and WRX STI had better be damn good, because they stand as the last option for Subaru AWD performance.

The "boomerang" in the headlights does a nice job breaking up the overly large scale of the headlights, and also connects the car's shoulder line to the wings in the grille.

Nice to see the keyless access & start finally make it into the options list for the Outback. Hopefully it's available on the Legacy, too. And it looks like Subaru addressed the problem with the roof rack by allowing the crossmembers to slide farther apart for longer items. Good to see that corrected.

I am probably in for a Legacy base model when these come out. I like my 2012 Impreza, however its a bit small and my car was one of the first ones produced and ti having some teething pains
