It was 1986. My auto 1970 Mustang Mach 1 had overheating issues, so I was forced to drive my friends (manual) Datsun/Nissan lowered king cab on a hot date that I had.
1 year later I got a 1987 Honda CRX Si. |

I learned to drive manual transmission with my fathers 1968 plymouth Valiant. It was a slant six engine w/ a three speed manual on the column. You dont see them anymore. That was in 1969 and I was 16. The car also had manual brakes and steering.

I got my first motorcycle at 5 years old, so I already understood shifting gears and clutches, but the first manual 4 wheeled vehicle was a Ford F700 dump truck. I wasn't strong enough to push the clutch all the way in, but it didn't need a clutch once you got it moving. A quick up shift, and rev match downs with no clutch at 10 years old It was a 6 speed with a two speed rear end (so basically 12 gears). I drove a ford ranger around the local dirt roads at 12-13 years old.. A dodge cummins diesel 5 speed from 13-16 years old (among all kinds of other vehicles my dad bought and sold).
I'm 29 and I've never had an auto transmission until my wife's new 11 forester. |

Practiced a few times and learned the basics in my buddies 07 rabbit like two years ago, but he sold it. Basically had to re learned in my 2012 WRX. First couple days I was terrified, it was my first brand new car, and my first manual. But now I love driving stick. Only been a month, but I really enjoy how much more into driving I am now lol

My friend's mid-90's Saturn, then nothing for a couple years until I got a job at a garage. I can't even begin to count the cars since then. Everything from busted little Civic with phantom gears (1st and 5th are pretty obvious, but third is just lost in a no-mans land of mush) to assorted 60's-present Porsches and a couple Z06's. And very soon my SVX. Brb, installing clutch.

A 1995 civic ex. I thought I was Paul walker in that thing. At 17 years old 13 years ago. Scariest day of my life when I was on a hill and rolling backwards cause I was terrible. I peeled out everywhere

I learned driving through the fields in my dads 1987 Ford F150 4spd w/granny gears. That was about 17 years ago and its still used as a farm truck. The things a beast!

17, my hand-me-down auto 98' Grand AM seized a month after owning it. Found a 95' Cavalier on the side of the road $500 bucks and barely managed to get it 5 blocks back to my house. Found out the clutch was shot so learned on my friends 91 Festiva. When I got the cavalier back stalled at a red light panicked and smoked the tires halfway through the intersection leaving only enough time for my brother who was following to catch the yellow. Drove a 96' cavalier auto, 94' Ford Probe GT manual, 03 Mitsubishi Lancer OZ Rally manual, 09 Lancer Ralliart auto, 11 Lancer manual, and soon to be my project Impreza L coupe manual.

anyone else sad at the trend of "the auto transmission we develop can shift faster than you can so our super car will only have flappy paddles"? After having the control and....let's face it....just plain fun of having the final say of when my car shifts with my past 2 cars I won't ever own an auto again until I'm too old to do it safely.

1972 AMX. Bought it and learned to drive it on the way home. Thankfully it had so much torque it was almost impossible to stall. Drove it home in 3rd and 4th as I couldn't find 1st and 2nd on the close throw shifter.
