long, hard left turn + hard acceleration + shifting = 2nd gear grind?
Here's the situation:
Wide intersection, green turn arrow, have to hustle across 4 lanes to make the next light. Shift to second while cornering and accelerating, and second gear grinds. It had been doing this a lot (under all kinds of conditions), but I changed my tranny oil and it seemed to go away, except this one circumstance. Any ideas why this one situation would make second grind like that? I think my clutch is going out, wonder if that has anything to do with it? Could the transmission mounts be flexing enough while turning to mess up the clutch cable and cause it to not be totally disengaged? Any other thoughts? Josh

Hmm, sure you filled up the tranny with enough oil? Perhaps oil starvation on the lateral g's during cornering? Don't know. I doubt the cable is the culprit.

There's definitely enough oil in the tranny... This tranny is out of a 1998 Impreza, and only has about 15k on it, so I doubt it's the synchros going out (which was my first thought).

You need to double clutch or heel toe.

Thanks for the suggestions, but to my mind, this is a symptom that something is wrong. I'd rather find out what the problem is and fix it than simply mask the symptoms. Double clutching may help, but where do you get this heel-and-toe business? I always do that while braking, but it's not an effective strategy while accelerating.

2nd gear is the subie's weakest link...
that is the gear that goes first... very common in racing.. if you are doing hard shifting... well now that's similar to racing... hmmm...... i'd be concerned... j. www.subiegal.com |
