Notice how they don't say the weight... STi wont be special until they can cut some fat. A lot of fat.

Have you not been paying attention? The 2012+ Impreza is lighter and the BRZ is relatively light. Subaru has stated that they learned a lot from the development of the BRZ that will be incorporated into the next WRX/STI. One obvious carryover has been Subaru's own direct-injection technology in the new Legacy and now Forester turbo models.
I wouldn't worry about them not being lighter. The biggest question for a lot of people right now is, "Will they make it smaller to compete in WRC?" Anyways, I just wanted to share the Forester news because it's cool to see 250HP and 258TQ on a 2.0 while only being mated to a CVT. It makes the next WRX/STI look that much more promising. Also notice that the Forester non-turbo finally gets a 6-speed manual. Subaru is listening! |

2.0XT Looks nice. Everything I've found says it's still TMIC. Must have some ducting from the grill running under the hood.

in 2002, from a forced induction 4 cylinder this was BIG news Max horsepower @ rpm 227 @ 6500 Max torque @ rpm 217 @ 5000 in late 2012, 250 hp @ 5,600 rpm* 258 lb.-ft. peak torque @ 2,000-4,800 rpm This is YAWN! Last edited by Nomadgene; 11-01-2012 at 03:54 AM. |

Glad you could contribute, Mike.
Honestly, though, given the demographic, 258lb-ft torque is okay. We also have to realize that all this going with the CVT. CVT! Of course, if you're not even looking at getting a Forester then I could see how one could be unimpressed. The main goal for these cars is to brag about increased MPG. We already know they can get more power from the engine, but at what cost? The Forester isn't about power, it's about utility. There's also the rumor that Subaru wants to make more STI variants based on how well the Forester tS has done in Russia. If that's true then you'll get your less-yawnful Forester in the future. |

I want a Turbo Diesel Boxer motor in an AWD chassis with 50 mpg and 450-500 foot lbs of torque. That is doable with CURRENT technology.
That will get me off my check book. |

I don't call 3,400lbs light. The STi is supposed to be a race car. That's what its made to do. Take out the heated leather seats, the fancy subs and all the other stuff and make it under 3,000lbs. You can have full interior and still be under 3,000lbs. If they want to make a luxury sports car so be it. But do it in the WRX. That's the point of having WRX AND a STi. Two different cars with two different purposes. Also for a NA two door the BRZ isn't that light. Granted it is a step closer but it's no miata or lotis.

It is lighter. Also, yes, the FR-S/GT-86/BRZ are considered light. For their size and tech and price, they're light. I refuse to pay the price of the Lotus and I do not like the looks of the Miata. I'm definitely not alone on this, which is why people are enjoying these cars. If they were considered heavy things would be different. You can't compare them to your wagon or any other old Subaru. New Subaru vehicles come with an airbag for the passenger's knees.... KNEES, Caleb! There's so much extra bracing and safety added to these vehicles that, yes, 2700lbs is considered light by today's standards. Also, the current WRX/STI are considered light for having AWD, turbocharging and four doors. Go do some comparisons against the competition, not the cars of yesteryear. You'll see what I'm talking about. I don't know if people ever complained about the Forester's weight, but I wouldn't doubt they made it lighter since it's based on the current Impreza and aiming to have better MPG. Same with next WRX/STI. People want more performance, but better MPG. They WILL be lighter. Will they be as light as a 90's Legacy wagon? Most likely not anymore, but that's not a fair comparison. Trust me. I'm with you on making these vehicles significantly lighter, but they're also making them more powerful to help offset the weight increase. |

Now how can there be a 6 or 8 "speed" CVT? Isn't that kind of a contradiction?

Yes. Someone else @ News & Rumor asked the same thing. haha I do know that the CVT can mimic gears for when you're using paddle shifters. For sportier driving you could use 6-speed, while maybe you would use 8-speed for when you're hauling things?

Meh, I'll be the first to say I don't like it. Maybe it would look better with a drop and some proper wheels.

I just noticed there is no manual option for the Turbo option. FAIL..
I agree with Nomad and Jordy though, Subaru needs to get off their duff and offer up a TDI version/line over here. Not to mention, in the great "tread lightly", "think green", "leave no footprint" ad campaigning, one would think a Turbo Diesel offering 50+ MPG would be the environmently good thing to do. |

It looks a bit like a Rav4 to me.
Subaru does offer Turbo Diesel... in Europe. Apparently Americans still aren't ready enough for it concerning Subaru's offering it here in the States. SOA Blog has stated that they discontinued the manual + turbo because of poor sales. Sales people on the forums have confirmed that despite their favoring them, they would sit on the lots for months. It's just not a viable market, which is a shame since I think it should be offered regardless just for variety's sake. |
