Pulled the rear cover off the transmission to hopefully find bad bearings on the center diff and replace them.

Found this instead...

Chunks of teeth from the two gears collected in the spot on the left.

The output shaft and gear.

Old diff on left, seems the keeper got torn out at some point and passed around in there, found a piece lodged in the oil channel for the output shaft. The main bearings for the center diff actually appear to be just fine.

Damn. So what's the remedy for that? Do you have to replace the entire trans?

Started cursing at it due to the increasingly loud noise coming from the trans. It's input shaft related. Guess it's getting close to time to tear it apart and see what needs to be replaced. I know it needs a new syncro for 3rd, but that's not my noise.

Got car out of Tranny shop after new clutch kit, starter and transmission. Really messed things up!!!! Dragging my car trying to break that ever-elusive under 12 second 1/4 mile. Oh well. Iíll go easy on the take offs for a while.

Hit up the junkyard for some forester struts to toss on my 91 legacy, fronts bolted in like butter and just need to swap the top hats on the rear tomorrow at work. Looking forward to seeing what size a tire I can stuff under there.

Project done. Everything fit perfectly after swappimg the rear tophats, then the hard part was getting a straight answer on tires. Ended up with a very aggressive tread on a 27/8.5r 14 that also actually somehow clears everything. Car has only rubbed once and it was at nearly full lock with the shock fully depressed.

Ordered some KSTech 19mm intake manifold spacers (not TGV spacers) to reverse my IM.

Installed the Killer B windage tray, flywheel, pilot bearing, clutch, and pressure plate to my motor.

I washed it last week. Actually, I washed both the 93 and the 96. And pressure washed my dadge, but didn't hit it with a soapy sponge. I think it's been over a year since any of them got washed.

No, as far as I could tell, the design of the center diff housing keeps any particulate separate from the main transmission parts.

So I replaced all parts in the center diff area. Just got it back together.

Tail housing with new output shaft bearing race, output shaft seal, center diff rear output shaft and bearing. All cleaned up

New output shaft and bearings, used old shims.

Transmission side with new bearing race for output shaft and new center diff installed.

You can do this job without removing the transmission, which made it something a normal person like myself can do in your garage pretty easy. Cost me about $1050 in parts from Subaru. All back together and she feels good and no bad noises anymore.

Rolled the dice and put in a 1999-2003 Legacy GT driver seat. I think it sits a bit lower than stock which is just fine by me. And It's comfy!

Drove 4.3k miles Boston to Bellingham via Yellowstone and MI UP. Car held up like a champ on the steep hills and I only got followed by the Law for 1 hr. in Wyoming :-)..

TOB went bad..... sooo... upgrade time

Exedy Stage 1 Organic Clutch with ACT Streetlite Flywheel and a Carbon Fiber driveshaft.

Snout of the transmission was all chewed up so it got re sleeved with a Tranquil TSK-3 which is ultimately just a steel sleeve so that the bearing sits on steel not aluminum.

Clutch feels great but too early to give full review till I have everything broken in.
