I KNOW I can do better, my ISO was too high, and the car was filthy from driving from Colorado to Southeast Missouri the day before, but other than a dirty car, and the grainy ISO, anyhting I need to work on?

Loving the angle and the composition. Can't see anything wrong other than overall it's a touch darker. You don't want to ruin the overall feel though, so I am not sure if a little brightening would even improve it. SICK!

The first shot is money, I just wish you shot a little more wide open to smooth the background a bit more and get that separation. The colors of the leaves pop enough that I don't actually need to see the leaves because there's so much to look at with the car. What lens/settings were you using? I like the second shot too but it's framed a bit to close for my taste (which really has no merit).

I got a D600!!!

After borrowing FX bodies for the past couple years, I finally ditched my D7000 and literally just received my first, very own FX body. I am beyond excited and look forward to losing all my money on some lenses I have always wanted.

Armin, car photography aside, pick 1: 14-24mm f2.8 or 24mm 1.4? I love wide angle, but I crave shallow DOF and low-light handheld. I still have my Tokina 11-16 2.8 that I can shoot at 2.8 on an FX body, so I may jump on the 24mm and just go nuts.

Also, any take on the 28-300mm f3.5-5.6? I've heard many good things, but also some bad things. It suffers from distortion at most focal lengths but that can be easily fixed in LR with the Lens Correction option. At the price point (<$1000), it seems to OBLITERATE the 24-120mm f4 in all the reviews I have read. I've always wanted a capable zoom for general purposes when I don't have my primes.

I'll have a 135mm f2 and 70-200 f2.8 to borrow when I need em, but I want a couple I can call my own.

Looking forward to your feedback.

Thanks guys! I didn't add the tilt, look at trees behind the car and the top of the mountains, that's the bank on the road

4 shots of my dads Bentley GT Coupe SPEED.... I only have 2 here, but the other 2 are in the process of being edited.

This first one I am not a big fan of, and I don't know why. It's either very boring, very underexposed, not properly polarized (i did use a CP), or all 3. Or the composition just is not very creative. I saw a cracking wall, questionable light, and a black Bentley and I thought it would work out. It doesn't seem to have worked very well. Thoughts?

This second one I like MUCH better, as it's crisp, clean, and sexy. But 2 things bother me and I am curious as to whether they bother you. 1) It's a tighter crop than usual, not leaving much room on the right side. 2) I am getting some light reflecting off the black paint, something which I tried to polarize for but couldn't block out.

You know the answer, it is boring because you're at normal standing height or close enough to it.

I really like the second shot, the passenger side tire is showing more than I'd like to see but I think the positioning of the car best shows the body lines.

Congrats on the D600. I'm jealous, i'd love to move to full frame.

I agree. I think a couple steps to the right would've been a better angle. I really like the picture though, and nice car!

I like the sunglasses shot, very creative! The only thing that bugs me about it is how the top left corner is completely blown out.

The teaser shot is a tough one...I feel like you could've at least gotten a bit more exposure out of it, but the location and composition just seems weird with the car merging into the plane behind it.

Love the colors and contrast, but I would've cleaned the leaves off the front of the car. I also understand where you mounted your license plate, but for the purposes of your photo, it really stands out a little too much. I probably also would've tried to position the car so that it couldn't have tree trunks growing out of it.

He just recently installed a complete suspension kit from Hotchkis, along with the new wheels and tires.

Next up is a refresh of the small block, which is soon to be replaced by a big block and T56. Bodywork and new paint is still being debated…

Some “performance” testing from when he first picked it up (Bone stock with 185,000 miles):

Hoping to get an impression of the new suspension and wheels/tires this coming weekend.
Interesting choice of cars. The photos are technically good, but I think a little more separation between the car and background in the first shot would help. It's just kind of a hard to make this car look good

Hey Armin, I've been meaning to ask you....do you shoot anything besides drifting events? I would love to see some of your road racing stuff if you have any!
Not bad! If you're going the selective saturation route, I'd go the whole way and make sure the rest of the scene was monochrome, since there's still a little color on the road. Your front end bimmer shot is good, but the rear shot is a little off center. I'd also probably raise the exposure a tiny bit on both of them.

As for road racing stuff, I've shot time attack and a lapping day before, but most of my stuff has been drifting. I just personally find drifting a whole lot more interesting and challenging to shoot overall. Here's everything I've shot motorsports wise:

This is by no means a good photo but it's not blurry. I took it with my point and shoot a while back before I got my DSLR

Photography and cameras are deceiving, just because there is enough light for our eyes doesn't mean there is for the camera, depending on the settings. Using a dslr is a little more difficult because of the changeable lens' and the cost associated with them. Your point and shoot can likely achieve an aperture of f/2.8 which lets a lot of light in but to achieve that with a dslr lens will be fairly expensive (usually) so just getting a dslr isn't going to make photos better. It is understanding the camera, settings and some basic guidelines that make the photos better and similar results can be achieved with a point and shoot.

If I could have purchased a Sony DSC-h9 (point and shoot my brother has) and a circular polarizer filter for it to reduce glare, I wouldn't have bought a dslr.

I would not recommend the canon tripod, the amount of weight it supports is too low and the leg angles are not independently adjustable. You want a tripod that will be stable with your camera (or future body upgrade) and heaviest lens. For easy comparison, a t3i and 70-200mm f/2.8 will weigh about 4.5 lbs. Personally, I'd want a tripod that can hold 7 lbs or more allowing for future growth. Same thing with the tripod head if you buy them separate.
I'm using Manfrotto 190xprob legs and 324rc2 joystick head. I probably should have gone with the 322 head for a little higher weight rating but i'm not close to the limit of the 324 yet. I highly recommend a head with quick release plate. I love the tripod legs, super versatile, each leg can be at a different length and angle and I have used some odd configurations. I prefer the lever/cam leg length release over the screw cap. When it is cold out and my hands are frozen, I'd rather not have to tighten/loosen a screw cap like Giottos or Induro brands.

Yes, CP filters do vary. You get what you pay for...to some extent. I have a 77mm B+W and use step up rings to allow for use on smaller thread lenses (thinking about future lenses too). This way, I only have one CP filter which is expensive but a few cheap step up rings allowing adaptability.

Youre looking at 1k tops for your first setup. Its all preferance. I like nikon. A d60 would be a great starter.

Just go on ebay or amazon and search for a d60 kit. should come with all you need to get started and itll be enough for a while.

You've got some blotches on the car itself that aren't edited properly on the roof and A-Pillar.

Wow, this is great! I think your black levels are just a TINY bit too high since we can't see much shadow detail, but the composition and lighting is just about perfect. I think that's just a minor thing to fix, so I'd say this is still well-deserved:

Nice capture! In cases like this I tend to have more above the car than below the car, mainly because the dirt is usually pretty uninteresting. The only time I frame it otherwise is when you can see the road in front of the car, like this:

Hard to say on which edit is better...they look very similar to me other than a minor contrast adjustment. The shallow DOF is nice, but I don't like how the car is just centered in the frame for both the front and rear shots. As for cloning out the pole, it'll take some time since you'll need to do multiple clones. It's more of a pain in the ass to do in Lightroom compared to Photoshop, but definitely possible.

I think that despite the ISO and dirty car, your photos are pretty good! The car's a bit too close to the bottom edge...just frame it a little higher and you're in very good shape.

Welcome back dude! Yes, the lines and poles do bother me, but I do like your exposure and composition otherwise. As for the side profile shot, I think you didn't crop it tight enough personally. A wide crop like that would work well with a really exceptional background, but not so much with just a wall.
