well i have them coming with the block heater, won't hurt to change them for peace of mind. 137.00 today for the new style heater, all 3 gaskets, and 5 oil filters, not too bad i guess. gotta love 20% off at subaru parts warehouse.

One last question, were you able to remove the header by itself, or did you have to remove the center pipe as the instructions dictate?

I didn't remove the center pipe. I just removed the three nuts on each manifold securing them to the heads.

i did this today. ended up removing the exhaust as the instructions say just because i didn't want to deal with coolant all over the exhaust and it made it easier to tighten up the heater. I did use the new style heater because it has better heat shielding and is much further from the exhaust. I forgot to take a pic of the clearance but it is close to 2" of clearance
and this is where i routed my cord too because I have a timer i use at work and it is easier to leave it under the hood. |

Nice install. I have my cable zip tied to the lower grille a few inches behind the plug. When I'm done with it, I just toss it behind the grille and it disappears.
I'm thinking about a hood liner for acoustic and thermal reasons. A lot of heat leaks out through the hood, and now that it's colder, I notice the engine sometimes has trouble maintaining 195F. |

Dynamat is good at deadening vibration, but not so much at absorbing sound. I'll have to do some research, but most likely it will be something thick, good at pulling noise out of the air and a good insulator.
The CVTs have an under-hood liner from the factory, but I'm sure there are better after market products. |

I meant when your car remains stationary idling in traffic, which is the same thing as what you said.

The radiator is very capable of keeping the engine cool enough.
Insulating the engine bay won't change the thermostat opening temperature. |

I don't think the difference would be significant. Warm air tends to improve economy a bit anyway. In any case, It's not a difficult thing to monitor. |
