Take your pick: CT (CART), NH (BMWCCA, O'Neil), VT (SCCA), NY (AMEC). Lots of events, a quick search will show much discussion to help you determine which type of event you'd rather do. The annual AMEC event for street cars is awesome.

There is a RallyX in souther VT on December 3rd. Check out www.ner.org. Ascutney(sp?) RallyX. Its kindof a haul for RI folk but it should be a good event.

Also if you are just down for some spirited driving check out the vermont winter rally. If you have never done a TSD before grab someone who has. Looks to be an awesome weekend FULL of quick driving.

There's also the Boston BMWCCA Ice Racing series that usually starts in February and runs for about five events over two months. Snowphun mentioned it in his post.

The events are all-day affairs, with usually between two and four competitive runs and a full day of practice course. The events are low key and great fun.

there will be a rallycross in stafford CT in January. ner.org Not sure of the date yet, but that is a fun course. Also check out the CT autocross and rally team http://www.cartct.com/index1.php?center=wintercross.htm, they run witnercrosses as conditions allow.

Also keep your eyes peeled for the Team O'Neil winter safety school (also mentioned by snowphun ). While its not competition, its a great place to learn new things in a safe environment. I took it last winter and if i have the $$$ I will again this year. hell, I'm even thinking of sending the wifey. Its a one day event run over a weekend.

Once its offered, sign up. Demand is high. I repeat demand is high

www.teamoneil.com is his website. he offers a bunch of different classes. top shelf instruction from people who really know.

Rally RPI was talking about a wintercross as well.

I'm going to give some form of quick driving in winter a shot this year. Definitely looking leaning towards the fun/informal/learning side of the spectrum, at least this year.

You'll be very disappointed in the RE92s at rallycross, wintercross, and ice racing.

How many miles do you have on them? They're bearable with under 10k miles, but anything over that, and they're hockey pucks in the winter.

I too have taken this course and it is VERY useful. I will try to keep up with the schedule and post when they are having one.

No Pooh Corner this year?

ditto on the winter safety school. It opens your eyes to the good, bad, fun, and ugly of driving in the slippery. The price (subaru) is nice too.

You'll be very dissapointed with RE92s in any snow condition, racing or not. What did you do to get your car ready for winter events? I would think real snows would be the first thing you'd get! They are the only thing that really matters. The Hankook W404s are great, but I haven't raced on them yet (they are for the wife's Forrester). I borrow Nokian Hakka Qs or RSIs from the rally team for racing my car, they are unbeatable.

I don't think you'd be allowed to ice race anywhere with RE92s, but I don't know the BMW club rules. I do AMEC ice racing and they don't even allow all seasons (all season = all compromise). Check out www.icerace.com.

You need to be willing to drive 3 to 6 hours to get to anything good. Last year I drove 8 hours up to Ontario for their winter road rally, ran the event from 10pm to 6am, slept 2 hours, then drove 8 hours back home.

yea im starting to consider some snows to buy. basically, im setting up my car with a Primitive front underbody sheild, mudflaps, clear vinyl tape and im looking for some cheap wheels to put some snows on now.
Anything else you guys recomend?

I really wish BMWCCA would ban all seasons, they are a real problem in many conditions as they get stuck far more often than the snows. AMEC banned them for last years street car event, still sold out quickly and there were very few cars that need a hand. Considering how overcrowded the BMW events are it seems they certainly have the luxury of restricting attendance to snows only.

BTW, I got an email from Phil at InControl yesterday and he said he's planning to do a few events at Weymouth Naval base again this year. I went to one last year and it was a lot of seat time and some great conditions. A good alternative for those down south.

#1--Buy good snow tires--your single best investment in performance winter driving. (like trying to ski without ski boots) Get them as narrow as will fit on the wheels you have. 195/65-15s on steelies will probably work over your WRX brakes, but you need to check exact fitment 1st.

#2--Invest in driving school to learn how to get the most out of your new tires without bending the car trying something you haven't learned to do yet. O'Neil's Winter Safety School is under $500 for Subaru people. If you think that's expensive, you haven't priced crash parts for a WRX yet!

#3--Get a good snow shovel & tow strap (and carry them at all times in winter). Playing with your Scoob in winter, you WILL get stuffed into a snowbank. Get used to it

The number of 15" wheels that will clear stock WRX brakes is very small. I have a set of Compomotive TH2 gravel wheels in 15x7, and they still required grinding down the outer face of the front calipers.

He'll most likely be running a 16" wheel of one kind or another.

This year I'm downsizing to 195/65-15 for snows, although i dont have the larger brakes like the WRX does so the changeover is quite easy. I bet you could change to RS brakes for the winter pretty easily + cheaply. I think all you'd need is RS rotors + caliper brakets (unless the RS calipers bolt diretly.) The RS + WRX calipers are the same, so no need to open the lines. Someone is always selling a set of RS brakes. Although, the easiest thing to do is just use stock WRX wheels and mount some snows in the stock size. It wouldnt be an optimum setup, but would work quite well..

Hey! Someone's badmouthing me!

I disagree. I put 73K on the WRX on RE92's over two winters. They served me just fine in the rain and snowstorms. I also ran two Tim O'Neil winter schools with them.

Of course they won't be competitive in a race compared to snow tires, but they are hardly the death rubber that people make them seem to be
