Default BMW to offer twin-turbo diesel in U.S.

BMW to offer twin-turbo diesel in U.S.

Diesel engines have had a long history of success in Europe, where BMW has offered them for the past 24 years. Now the German auto maker is looking to bring that success to America, and to do it in style: the 3.0L six-cylinder twin turbo mill makes 286hp (213kW) and a massive 427lb-ft (578Nm) of torque in the Euro-spec 335d. BMW is also keen to emphasize that this is a very refined motor - it’s not the rattling, foul smelling powerplant of your neighbor’s Ford pickup.

Which models will have the diesel powerhouse as an option, and how the engine will affect the price remains unannounced. The 335d and 535d sedans, and the 635d coupe will be available for test drives of the engine, however, so those models at least should have the option.
Perhaps the biggest point of interest of the new diesel is its efficiency: combined cycle tests yield 35mpg (6.7L/100km) compared to the 335i’s six-cylinder petrol motor that scores a meager 20mpg (11.7L/100km) and only outputs 300hp (223kW) and 300lb-ft (406Nm) of torque. Unfortunately, there is no word yet on when the efficient and powerful oil-burners will appear in U.S. showrooms, but as the American dollar continues its dive and global oil prices continue to rise, it’s nice to know you don’t always have to give up performance to gain efficiency.

I'll take this motor in a 1-series, please. 35mpg + 427 ft/lb (!!) = happy commuting.

Probably closer to 40mpg in a 1-series.

My question is if they are bringing this diesel to the states, why wouldn't they bring their other oil burners here?

Nope, the 1er is just about ~100lbs lighter than the 3er with worse aerodynamics. I wouldn't expect it to get BETTER numbers.

Wow, that's surprising. I'd have expected the 1er to be lighter...

Diesel engines usually weigh significantly more than their power-equivalent petrol-powered brethren. Maybe more efficiency, but not going to handle/perform as well.
I know this is obvious and it's awesome that they're bringing it here, but just a heads up.

Because the cooper D is crap. Why would a buy a SPORT hatch then ruin it's go-kart likeness with a diesel. If I'm gonna buy a diesel it's gonna be for economy and it's gonna be in a boring car like a jetta.

The Mini is lightweight. Seems like a diesel is a great idea. The diesel engine won't ruin the fun, imho.

It just says they don't know the exact dates or models. If it is vailable in a 5-series awd wagon, I will be all over it. (MB so far only has the rwd E320 sedan, the horribly ugly R320, plus some SUV.)

Reading comprehension.... I Have none!

mis-read that last part.

In Canada, they have diesel for the E class, ML class, R class, and GL class. My mom has the ML320CDI and I managed around 10.5L/100km in the city and 8.5L/100KM on the highway.. that's the same as my WRX except it's 20cents cheaper per litre and it's a 4900lb. AWD luxuries SUV

^^That doesn't seem that great for a diesel. My wife's gas V8 S500 gets mid-20s mpg on the highway which is not much worse than my WRX which gets high 20s.
