Default MY05- Death of Baja, New WRX Color

Maybe not the stories of the year, more of a little heads up.

Apparently the 2005 Baja was to be the last confirmed year. I dug a little deeper and found out today that consideration for 2006 will solely depend on sales numbers of the 2005 models. Even though we will all see the new redesigned Legacy/Outback line in the next several months the Baja will continue in it's current design through the '05 run. Don't count out the 2006 yet.

IMO, An '06 Baja in the new design would look pretty awesome but, Subaru may have to reconsider the current pricing if they plan to sell more of them. A 2006 Baja 3.0R (?), imagine that.

Also, the WRX line will be adding Crystal Gray as a color choice in '05. This is suspected to be the SOA name for Gunmetal and it will be offered in STi also. I've been reading some posts in other threads stating that Aspen White may be replaced by this color but that isn't so, Gray will be an added color to the current choices.

Update- Saw a paint chip today of the Crystal Gray, it's not Gun Metal unfortunately. Looks a little like the gray in that car show picture further in this thread.

Oooooh! An STi in gunmetal would be very sweet indeed!

Then they'll only have to make it more theft proof and get rid of that rediculous steering wheel cover...

My source is Subaru. I've briefly mentioned how I'm involved in wholesale parts and car distribution. You can take the rumors for what they're worth, I just pass it along.

What part of Subaru? I've got contacts there too, and to the best of my knowledge, they are not aware of that.

Don't get me wrong, you may be right. I guess what I'm asking is, are your contacts in a position to know this kind of info, or is it just inter-office heresay?

The color dosn't matter since in short order all you'll see is primer.

Hey what about blue primer.

damnit, damnit, damnit, damnit

... I wanted a gray wrx after seeing TI-REX's but I just didn't think they would add a color in 05 so I didn't bother waiting. I say again ... damnit!

Would I trade the 5 months I will have owned this car in order to get gray? ... Probably not

Will the new color carry over to other models? I would love to see this available on the new Legacy.

my wife wants a baja for her next car... looks like it'll be a used 05 turbo then, since it's going to be a few years before she's getting a new car.

Me too. Many of the pictures I've seen of the JDM Legacy display the gunmetal color. The color looks perfect on the new Legacy.

No, not inter-office heresay. Without being too specific, my contact for this information is in a definite position to know this first hand. He is in sales management at the corporate level and was also very involved with the Legacy/Outback introduction in California about 2 weeks ago. He drove those models and is instrumental in pre-ordering dealer inventories and forcasting their sales.

May I ask what field your contacts are in?

Again, without getting too specific, customer/dealer relations, and is in close contact with SOA higher ups. Does that mean this person if privy to everything, no. Nor does it imply that this person is letting out all the info that he or she knows. It's just that my conversations with this person has not lead me to to think that the Baja has been terminated.

Well this is what I got from my dealer yesterday in my email to my response

My statement

"The WRX line will be adding Crystal Gray as a color choice in '05. This is suspected to be the SOA name for Gunmetal and it will be offered in STi also."

Dealers Statement:

"We just ordered an STI in that color yesterday! I think it's going to look awesome. Also, they are changing the TS badging to RS sedan and wagon, and there is going to be an RS sport package with a sunroof, and a new Impreza regal blue and obsidian black."

Keep in mind this is in Canada so some of what she said may not be available in the U.S.

FINALLY A MOONROOF IN THE 2.5RS!!! I really hope this is true!

I've always wondered why there was no moonroof available in the 2.5RS when you can get an auto-open moonroof in a $14K Dodge Neon or Cavalier.

My next car has 3 requirements: AWD, moonroof, and affordable. Until now, the RS only fulfilled 2 of those.

I agree with you on reliability of some information. Subaru is well known for keeping secrets. I don't want to believe that the Baja will go away because it really is a sporty driving, tight, vehicle. It just needs to be more in line pricewise with competing models like the Nissans and Toyotas. For example, you can even get a base 210hp 3.7L V6 4WD Dodge Dakota for $21k. Sure the Baja has a much better ride but, that's not what the majority of the truck buying public sees. I look forward to a new style Baja for the '06 MY. It would definitely be much sleeker looking and with the right options and pricing could be a solid contender in the small utility truck category.
