It still exists in OEM form but it's kind of fugly since it was made to fit around the cage on MX-5 Cup cars.

There are a couple of aftermarket options but haven't seen anything people are super happy with yet.

Fiat is coming out with a removable hardtop for the 124 which should bolt right up to the Miata, but it's for a special edition run of cars so who knows if they'll be available for purchase (and at how many thousands of dollars).

I'd have to see it in person before judging appearance; also Mazda is asking $4,400 (as an option to the cup cars, not for retail) so maybe aftermarket is a better solution - I like the idea of it clearing a cage though; not that I'd want to track a brand new car (unless it was purpose bought), but thinking ahead... I miss tossing tiny light weight cars around and punishing tires.

unless you are competing and need a rollcage, the RF weight penalty is worth the compromise. It retains 50/50 weight and the up/down top operation gets some attention.

But don't take my word for it. Go put a few miles on a local one. It's like playing with a puppy.

That happened to me as well. Went to the dealer to test a CX-3, came away with a MX-5

Engine RPM increase (6,800 to 7,500 RPM redline)

New lighter weight pistons
New lighter weight connecting rods
Updated crankshaft counterweight design
Throttle valve air passage increased by 28%
Intake port area expanded by 18%
Larger exhaust valves
Larger exhaust manifold

Yep. The 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed Miata had 178, but was ~200-300 lbs heavier than the current softtop, depending on trim.

Is it the 90's again? a Japanese manufacturer made a decent roadster, and is now giving it the gram treatment to make to better. It's going to scratch that "winder" itch for a lot of people.

The OEM hard top is for race teams only.. the dealerships won't sell them. They aren't water tight, don't have a liner, and you can't open the trunk with them installed.

Did you try the soft top? The reason I hated the old PRHT model was the mandatory wait at every stop or sign of rain to put the top up and down. The ability to raise and lower the top while creeping along under 6mph in the RF is a huge improvement.. but the soft top can be raised and lowered with one arm in just a few seconds while travelling at surface street speeds. With the PNW's occasional heavy drizzles punctuating the sunshine this time of year, I can imagine it's a bit of a pain to slow to a crawl in traffic and have to wait 13s for the top to close.

you can even get mod that lets you operate the top while driving faster than 6mph. Mazda set that limit because thats the speed where hair starts to blow around and you don't want your wife's long hair to get into the mechanism.

So far, the top up/down emergencies have been rare because hard rain is pretty rare here. Just keep speed at 40+ and the water blows right over you. The soft top is definitely more convenient for the quick operation but the extra quiet you get in the RF pays dividends on long, highway drives.

If they got that much power out of it by not even changing the displacement, they must have really been on a tight budget for the initial version. It must have been a drop in motor from the Mazd 3. I bet the MX-5 would have sold better if they could have had that power rating from the beginning.

maybe, maybe not - they also could have intended to make incremental increases every couple years - look at the modular 5.0 mustang:
2011 5.0l hits the mustang
2015 S550 chassis/IRS, 5.0 horsepower increase
2018 5.0 displacement & horsepower increased thanks to cylinder lining

engineer it then fine tune it year to year is a good model rather than blow all your cookies on the initial release, that's makes things appear "stale"

The 2.0l was a relatively late addition to the lineup when Mazda USA said the 1.5l wouldn't work for our market. They more or less dropped it right into the car while the 1.5l got the sprucing up treatment since it was at the core of the car's development. So now they've finally gotten around to giving the 2.0l the same treatment.
