Default 30,000 Mile Service i$$ue

The main problem is the roughly $500 bucks I was quoted for the complete service. I can do some of the little stuff myself, but do not have the ability to do any of the bigger things.

Can anyone recommend a shop in the Boston area that either specializes in Subaru, or at least a shop that is familiar with the cars and service needs?

Thanks very much,
Viv

Exeter charges around 500 for it... So yes, it generally costs that much. Keep in mind though - they change EVERY fluid. From coolant to brakes, tranny, diff, etc. All the filters - PCV, air, oil, fuel, etc. Spark plugs, plus check everything. CV joints, bushings, etc.

It's worth it if you pay to have a good shop do it.
You can save yourself some money by doing it yourself - but you need a garage and some free time.

Default Is it even worth it

Do you think it is even necessary; do most of those fluids even need changing so early on??

thanks again,
Viv

*Shrug*... I guess it all depends how you look at it.

My father paid $470 for his 30,000 mile service. I picked up all the parts/pieces/fluids and spent 2.5 hours doing the service to my car for a total of $78. $400 in savings is almost a set of r-compound tires in my book. It also helped me to familiarize myself with my car.

Contrary to what Kris said, you don't need a garage. A floor jack, a couple of jack stands, and some hand tools are all that's required. Just pick a sunny day to do it.

Judging by the weather we are about to get, I think we are almost out of sunny days...

I plan on doing my own 30K service. Mostly, because I'm a cheapskate!

I am with Mark on this. I did my own for about $80 and one day of time. Now, it might be in your best interest to have the fuilds done by the dealer for ease of disposal, but most of the stuff on the list is B.S.

Kris, I don't thik CV joints are part of the service either. They are a sealed type of joint, and I am not sure if a torn boot/bad joint would be covered under warranty. But inspecting and looking for those things is part of the service.

I would do:
Oil + Filter
Aif Filter
Fuel Filter
PCV Valve
Diff/Tranny Fluild
Coolant Flush
Brake Fluid Flush

Many other items on the list were inspection of *Fill in Black*, which can be done while the wheels are off, and the hood is up.
