Default STI Gas Mileage

I know the mileage rating is 18-24 c/h but I was wondering what gas mileage you STI owners are getting.

I'm in a quandary between choosing a RX-8 or an STI. The RX-8 having looks, and fun. While the STI having speed/4wd, and practicality. I commute 50+ miles a day so gas mileage is going to be the breaker. The rating of the RX-8 is the same 18-24 c/h but in real life it is really 15-20. Help me please..

I get 25 MPG, but I drive 95% freeway in 6th gear with cruise control. Your mileage may vary.

If you care about mileage, don't get an STI, get a WRX or an RS.
The STI is much less comfortable, much noisier, and much less economical than either of the others.

Thar being said, I avg'd 28 mpg in my STI on the last tank. I could only go 35mph on the highway with the stock tires.

RS gets good mileage.

I average 365 miles per tank.

30mpg on the freeway

405 miles was most on one tank.

I commute about 36 miles one way to work...The STi will beat you up...it is loud...the steering is VERY twitchy...not what you want after working all day. Forget about one hand on the steering wheel and coffee or cell phone in the other..Mileage is terrible...I'm getting MAYBE 16mpg, my '02 F250 4wd diesel got better mileage...You WILL NOT be able to keep your foot out of the STi. You will be doing most of your driving @ 3,000 rpm in 6th which is like 80Mph (indicated)..The tank is small, so you will be filling up (premium) all the time...The STi really should be wacked with a gas guzzler tax but somehow squeeked by...Of course you could always buy a beater car for your commute, something like a 2 year old Echo and keep your STi for playtime.. I had to sell my truck to get my STi and bought a beater '88 ford for the commute..I love the STi but if you are looking for a commuter with decent MPG's look elsewhere.............Too LOUD, terrible mileage..Twitchy steering (even on the highway)..BUT lots of FUN..Today I burned up a tank taking a bunch of back roads to New Hampshire and back, ( i live in maine)..just for giggles.

gas milage is my only gripe with the STi, that and its gearing which i dont mind too much, but i just hate constantly shifting...i average around 20-22 miles per gallon....thank god i have a civic for my daily driver! $15 fills my tank on the civic, where as $15 fills my tank on the STi from the half way mark

I commute more than 62 miles one way fairly often during the week and love every minute of it.

I get 17 mpg in around town driving, and 22 mpg on the highway. Over 5 months these numbers haven't varied by more than 1 mpg. The mileage is pretty much exactly what I expected. A larger fuel tank would have been nice, though.

after 75mph, mileage takes a steap drop.

i'm still on breakin.. and i have 215 miles and a 1/4 tank left. we'll see what happens when my low fuel lite coems on, and i fill her.

I have to agree. I was driving around 500 miles a week for a period of 10 weeks, and the STi was very comfortable. But then again... 4 of the last cars that I owned were either on coilovers or lowering springs/struts, and all had aftermarket exhausts.

In terms of my gas mileage, I'm not sure. I just smile as I fill up with 94 octane Sunoco (while it lasts, as I got back to CA and crappy 91 octane in March).

I'm in that 17-19mpg club mixed highway and city. But even on the highway, I get bored if I'm cruising for too long.

I think your car has a gas leak. 16mpg!
This car isn't twitchy in the least. It has a shorter steering rack that an Outback Family Wagon, but that doesn't make it twitchy. I eat, drive, and talk on the phone at the same time on the highway. Now if you wanna talk twitchy, jump in an Evo. You can get use to it, but at first, you better be sharp of mind.

I admit, you have a hard toss up, considering your use of the car. I would think the 8 is a better chick magnet and more widely excepted by average peers. I think the STi is more fun to drive, not that the 8 isn't a blast as well. More color choices with the 8. I would think better reliability and resale with the STi. You can fit much wider tires on the 8. You an gain easy power with the STi.......guess I'm going a bit off-topic, when your main quetion was mileage. oops

Though I avg 28 on the one tank. I overall avg 300 mi on a tank getting 13 gal when I fill up. That's 23 mpg. Mostly highway.

My 28mpg tank came after the snow and I had no otherway to get to work. I avg 25-35mph on the highway for 200 something miles and then filled up. Came to 28mpg.

I'm getting 19-20 city and 22 highway (6th gear, cruise on, right on speed limit, some acceleration every so often).

On a trip to N.C. cruising,,just after breakin miles,, I got 27mpg,,,,around town im figuring 20-22 mpg unless my foot gets heavy which it does quite frequently
My daily commute is short and enjoyable.
Rudy

ps IMHO the STi is not a loud car in stock configuration.

Just for grins..........how many of you DON'T have a radio and still claim the STi isn't loud on the highway? If you listen to your radio most of the time you will not notice how incredibly loud this thing is...I have no radio, the only music I hear is the turbo..tire thump, and of course the wind blowing by at around an indicated 80mph...As far as gas mileage goes...that is so incredibly dependent on how you drive that i guess it makes no real sense to even mention it...I get 16-17 mpg..w/2k on it so far..maybe it will get better or maybe i should drive it slower....BTW...The owners reference guide that came with my STi mentions that "Driving performance of your WRX STi has been prioritized above driving comfort" and goes on to say that NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) levels can be higher........So yep, it is a loud car but it is a LOT of fun........Recent HOT ROD mag had STi vs SVT Cobra and they also agree that the STi mileage is terrible..actually worse than the 8cyl SVT engine...which does get a gas tax...go figure. The steering in my STi twiches all over the place...you guys are probably use to it...coming from a normal car (Saab turbo, and F-250) it is REALLY noticable...

BleuByu,,when you said loud,,I thought you ment exhaust, which is very quiet IMHO.
But your right about the other noises,,tranny, diffs, etc.Which can be noisey, if your not used to them.
I have a radio, but use it rarely,,,I like the sounds the car makes, but then again I'm a gearhead

I do the same...about 120 miles round trip (to and from school) everyday and also love EVERY minute.

I think the best I've gotten is around 19 mpg.

I get 250 miles to the tank MAX.

97% City driving w/ 35mph zones and 20mph school zones.

I also have a heavy foot, especially on the weekends.

I use to think that the STI had twitchy steering. But now that I have driven it a while, I think that more an artifact of the way it handles when the road is wet. Also I put more air in the tires. Suburu say 36/30. I put in 38/32. That seem to help with the twitchy steering.

I haven't got a radio either. To keep with the spirt of the STI, I'm trying to find a "lightweight" radio/speakers to put in. As for noise: My only complaint is the tire noise is a bit much on some surfaces. At first I thought the turbo whine was cool... now its a bit irratating.
