getting a piston bored questions????
i have an 02 wrx 2.0t engine that had a burned up piston. i tore it down and it is at the mechine and they said that it will need to be bored out to the next size over. they asked me what the factory askes for skirt and ring gaps. i called the dealer and they said they dont know. also i asked around and i have been told that only one over on 1 piston is fine for balence. not ideal but fine.

I'd never do it but sometimes you have to do what you need to do. No way to pull off all 4?

I would be concerned that you'd be doing all this work for nothing. I can not give you an engineering answer on whether it's safe or not, but from my experience I've always did all or nothing. Doing 1 may upset the balance just enough to cause premature failure of other parts (IE bearings) and then you'll be doing this all over again wishing you found the extra 100$ to just do all 4.
Anyone else have a more... technical answer? |

i wish it was only another $100. from subaru pistons are $75 each and then the cost to have all 4 bored vs 1. where else can i get 4 pistons. all the ones i have seen are 450 500 for a set. also anyone know what the tolerences are on the gaps?

find a blown ej205 with good cylinders. you can find plenty of spun bearing motors on here for dirt cheap. put your crank, rods and new pistons in there. simplest and cheapest solution.
Its not the best way, but its better than throwing your motor way out of balance. |

I wouldnt try to bore out only one cylinder. I agree either get another block or get 4 new pistons.

Buy all 4 pistons. Get an aftermarket oversized set (not JP). Then give them to your engine builder and they'll build it to spec of the pistons. No sense in boring out the damn block before you even have pistons!
Judging by your complaining of paying $75 for a piston and even contemplating replacing one vs all 4 you are wasting your time thinking about rebuilding. You'll end up spending more on gaskets, headstuds, seals, etc. than you have a clue about. Don't waste your time or money if you're short on cash. Go drop in a used motor that runs w/ low mileage. It'll be cheaper. Unless you have at least $1k set aside for a super cheap rebuild. Or do what quadtard said... |

i am going for all 4 now. i was just trying to save money at each step so it dosnt get out of control. the reason i asked is an over sized piston is only .5 mm bigger. with the way subarus run i didn't think it would even notice. i guess im in the market for 4 oversized pistons if anyone knows of some. i have an add in the wanted section.
