The "bored at work" thread
Anyone else bored at work at a borderline decent paying, seemingly dead-end job with no future but doesn't want to leave after only having worked 4 months because it'll look crappy on their resume?
I need a different career, sitting in front of a computer 8 hours a day getting fat and doing monkey work really isn't really cutting it lol.

I work at Honeywell Video Systems in Surrey...
Travelling sounds fun, but the prospect of having no property, savings or job at the age of 27 doesn't sound too appealing |

Honeywell video systems?
Neat. I should pay you guys a visit with my BNC series of connectors, and quad shield headened cable. It's blue, you know. I'm not bored today, mainly because I bought a new office chair. It's amazing how your perception of a job changes when new office furniture is involved. |

I wish we had new office furniture. My chair is a piece of crap that's aggravating my already sore back. This building is ghetto too, out of forty people total that work here there are like 35 guys and the guy's bathroom has one john...awesome.
Funny you mention BNC connectors I just did a document for one of our cameras that talk about BNC connectors for the main and aux video output. I was like wtf is a BNC connector. lol |

hahahha, now you're in cable geek territory.
BNC = British Naval Connector Devised by the brits many moons ago to ensure a good, solid, water resistant connection for their ship's communication systems. Now they use them in any application where strength is key, like interac machines, and cash registers. I've been seeing a lot more BNC's in high end home installs lately. I don't know why, they don't shield as well as a coax, imho. I feel like such a geek. Do you want my old chair? It's not bad, just a bit squeaky. Oh, and it smells like farts too. |

Hmm... thanks for the offer, but I think I'll pass on the chair.
So you sell just cables? How exactly does one get into the cable business? |

Isn't that quad shield stuff hard to fit to a connector? Doesn't it have higher loss too? |

But you have your car! That's "property" except that it'll dwindle in value to the point where you're going to be able to sell it for say $2000 in about 10 years.

I sell cables and cable accessories. Not terribly exciting, but the fact we're so well established in the industry makes for a cushy job..... most of the time. I don't recommend getting into this industry. The profit margins are now so low, I can't be bothered to come into work some days. Tis the nature of competition though. I'm just glad my customers have had issues buying the cheap stuff, now they're willing to pay more for my products. Quote:
A lot of pro gear is now using BNC's. I've noticed that a lot of composite cables are going away from RCA fittings, and into the more stable BNC. I don't know why they don't use F fittings on pro stuff. The cost is less than a BNC, termination is easier, and the losses are minimal if one terminates properly. On that note, I laugh when I see someone spending $100 on a monster cable from Future Shop. I've done some testing against MC parts, and while they work, they're not worth the huge markup. My RCA series of patch cords equals the performance of the MC branded cords, at a quarter of the price. |

Plus it's not like I surf NASIOC without any risk. I pretty much run the risk of being fired at any moment, not that that really bothers me |

Hypa, your company sells connectors do they also build and sell assemblies? What company do you work for? I work for a company that manufactures wireless internet equipment and we're using some cable assemblies that use U.FL and N connectors. Let me know if this is anywhere near your area of exppertise.
