Default Chi: Anyone interested in/know where to find Royal Purple gear oil?

I've been driven nuts by this intermittent grind into 3rd gear and so I searched back into the Transmission forum to see what I can find. I turned up this link that went over what fluids are good, bad, and unavailable for our manual transmissions.

The post in that thread that interested me the most was snookem's post about 3/4 of the way down the 2nd page. What he says about Royal Purple :
Quote:
I have found that I liked royal purple but it seemed a bit noisy but it changed gears really well. Quaker state synthetic was good and quiet but not as nice a shifting as royal purple but still very very good.
Personally, I could care less about noise, my car is already noisy as hell, but if it shifts great and protects without corroding any of the soft internal metals that the synchros are made of... I'm all for giving it a shot.

My biggest problem is that I can't find a local place that sells it. The best I could find single quarts for online was $8.67, and I started searching a bit more until I came up with this site --> http://www.oiltown.com/cards_rp/max_gear.html -- where the oil is $70/case of 12 quarts, plus shipping.

So, if anyone else here is interested, want to split a case? It'll be $78.72 shipped here, so $39.36 for 6 quarts. IIRC, our manual trans' (5MT's) take 3.5-4 quarts, so we'll have plenty. And hell, if the trans only takes 4 quarts (factory manuals say 3.7qts), we'll have enough for 3, too.... that'd be $26.24 each.

Maybe before you try that you might try the Amsoil Series 2000 synthetic 20/50 engine oil in your gear box. Its made my trans a different animal, slipped into 1st @ 21, 22 mph with Todd in the car lastnight...

Hayeva, There Might be a place about a mile away that sells it, thier a race shop of some sort right off of 38 in Cortland, i think i saw a sighn out fron about a month ago advertising Royal purple on sale, before that i didnt know they offerd walk up sales...
Theyve got a vette and a few other race cars in thier window all the time though.
Ill check it out tomarrow and let you know.
Rock!

As much as I hate to refer to Cobb, there is a certain amount of given trust in published data that he's put out. Seems they think the Amsoil 2000 series is great for slip, but that it doesn't do too well with quick-shifting drivers (/me raises hand).

http://www.cobbtuning.com/tech/gearoil/index.html

FWIW, I have Redline 75W90NS in my trans now and ever since it went in I had intermittent problems with 3rd gear synchro. *shrug*

Please do let me know about the place out there if you pass it by and can check it out. I'll have to give a ring to a few places around here... maybe E&R will have it, they seem to be a pretty broad place.

Lightbulb Garage Kwai

Over on Arthur Avenue has Royal Purple motor oil, I wouldn't imagine it'd be a stretch that they have gear oil as well. [BTW, I'm running Royal Purple motor oil in the Rex right now ]

That Neo stuff doesn't look too bad as well, though I think I'm going to try the RP for now just because someone has already run it in a Subaru trans and reported on it. Perhaps if the RP stuff ends up driving me nuts I will have to hunt down some Neo and try it out.

stirex - Thanks for the offer. I will PM you tomaro evening if I can't find a place with it in stock.

Ty - Garage Kwai, eh? Never thought about hunting through the import shops as most of them already have alliances with Redline. I will have to give them a ring tomaro as well.

Im still gonna look in a few hours when i get out of here to do laundry, But...
I just visited teh Cobb link above...
IM NOT using gear oil, its series 2k 20/50 engine oil. ive gotten it to grind once (besides reverse) and im very confident that it was my fault while jamming into 2nd racing ... somthing... anyhway, the stuff has been in my since the clutch change, ive got about 15000 on the stuff (about 6 trips to maryland) and so far its really great stuff...

That being said, TimSanders** *** ***d to the same stuff about a week after i did, he said hes gotten his trans to grind a few times but has gotten rediculous MPG increases (he wrote a post about it a few months ago)
If i keep it out of boost i can replicate his milages, but i cant do that on any kind of regular basis,.. i could only last about a half tank before i cant keep it under 80 and have to shoe it a few times just to keep awake
So, What im sayin is, i beat the hell out of my trans from a gear changing perspective and have been silly impressed with the S2k 20/50.
Ill repost later after i check out that shop down the road...
Rock!
Trent

[edit] i seriously dont know why thats all ***'d out, i wrote nothing perverse there... [edit]

Nick: if for whatever reason you did need some amsoil stuff, let me know... I'm placing an order for myself in the next day or so.

Obviously, anyone else who needs amsoil stuff can get whatever they need 24/7 via the amsoil store I have setup on my website.

I would definately try the Amsoil s2k 20w50. Like wrxpkr/Trent said, It's a completely different tranny. I don't hesitate at all while shifting. I used to have to wait for the rpm's to drop so it would'nt grind, but now I just ram it in there no problems.

Red line works well too. dwx, dorao, slack all use it and report no grinding. They are all using different varients of the shock proof.

Wrxpkr, I can't remember what the sk2 20w50 cost, do you. I think it was 30ish?

8complex, the link to cobb has a review of the amsoil s2k 75w90, not the 20w50.

Ahhh, I was questioning why the hell you'd use 20W50 in a trans that called for 75W90, but then I came across a simple chart on this site --> http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/oilinfo1.htm. I am still kinda curious about using a synthetic motor oil (where obviously less friction = better for everything) in an application where you need friction modifiers for the synchros to function.

Unfortunately Street Stuff doesn't carry RP unless you special order and Garage Kwai just carries their motor oil on the shelf. Unless Trent turns up some out by him, looks like Jegs is the place to go. *shrug*

If all else fails, I suppose I'll try the Amsoil, but I'm just rather baffled about the lack of friction modifiers.

Edit: Guess I had this window up for a while, huh? LOL, thanks Trent. Will let you know, though I might just stop out that way this afternoon... got a friend going to school out there so I might make it a double-purpose trip.

Heh, ok, they close at 4, and I drive fast, but not THAT fast. Will call and see what they say, and possibly place an order.

Trent - I'll drop ya a PM if I place an order to see if you'll be around there tomaro. If not, I can always pick it up myself or even have the friend of mine out there pick it up and bring it back with her tomaro nite.

A Jiffy Lube carries it? Thats kinda wierd. Unfortunately I think it's a bit late to make it up that way.

Trent - Would you mind picking me up 5qts. of 75W90 Max-Gear? I talked to them about the SynchroMax and it really doesn't sound like what I'm looking for... the guy I talked to said it's mainly for the new manual tranny's that call for auto trans fluid... "some watery s--t" to quote him exactly.

He also said it was like $4-5/qt. but I highly doubt that. Still, if it's less then $9/qt, please do grab it for me and I'll give ya the cash tomaro evening.

Well, the cheapest place I found it online was that case I posted in the original post that was $70... the brought it to around $6.xx/qt. I'm guessing that site is just about wholesale since the case normally retails for $104 (just under $9/qt.). Who knows though... maybe he's selling it for cost.

The place sounds interesting... here is thier site I got the location info from --> http://www.melroset-tops.com/
