My dad had one. I was doing axle swaps on my XJ so my daily driver it was out of commission for a week or two as I got that done. I borrowed the SRT WK during that time. After driving it every day for a week+, I just wanted my XJ back. And not because of gas mileage, either.

Well I may have found a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 4wd for ~$1k with under 100K miles!
Coworkers boyfriend had the emergency brake stick, didn't feel like dealing with it (2nd vehicle) and parked it. I'm going to check it out tomorrow. |

So what's the off road thread think.
It appearently does run and they're just tired of "dealing" (i.e. it's been parked for months now and they don't want to take the time to do anything) with it. If i can get the parking brake unstuck and test drive it and it seems otherwise fine I'm buying I think. How bad are the transmissions? Getting it for ~$1,000 |

For daily driving, the tranny should be fine (presuming it has been taken care of). You may want to do some general maintenance on it though (flush, filter, etc.).

I figure pick it up for 1,000, spend about 1,000-1500 on maintenance and I'm still coming under my 3,000 mark and it'll be worth ~4k. I think it has less than 100,000 miles on it. It is, which concerns me. But the coolant overflow was full so it doesn't leak just sitting there... |

The WJ engine/transmissions are just fine. They could even be called stout and reliable.
It's everything else you have to worry about (heads cracking in that year, axles howling, blend doors if auto climate control, etc.) Edit: I see it has the 242 T case. VERY nice. |

If I recall correctly, 2000 is one of the affected years. Be careful about potential overheating problems, especially if that is a jug of coolant in the back seat Just one of a million threads on this can be found here: http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums...d.php?t=391831 And about the axles: if you have the Dana 35 rear (I think all the 4.0's did), then you'll be fine. But the aluminum housing D44 found under the V8's is a disaster. |

The head cracking is seen on 0331 head castings, between cylinders 3 and 4. The 7120 doesn't have this issue, and can accept the newer valvetrain nicely. This is why when I built my motor, I used a 7120 head on a 2000 Grand Cherokee block with 2001 valvetrain.
The axles howling... yeah. More of a Grand Cherokee problem. They liked to chew-through differentials. |

Pop the valve cover off and you'll see the casting number on the top of the head.

2000-2001 were the bad head years IIRC. THere's also a heat soak issue on them.....the injectors need to have heat collars installed. I had an '01 XJ and had this issue.....maddening until I sorted it out (it wouldn't fire during the heat of summer if the engine was warm....cold start was fine).

I had some heat issues with my cherokee, but that came towards 90,000 miles...then we got rid of it.

How much does it cost to fix the if the head cracks? (in parts).
The most important thing is that it will stay running while i gather resources to fix it should it need to, I.E. non catastrophic failures. The head issue seem's like it could go both ways. Last edited by soslow; 12-06-2012 at 12:28 PM. |

The only pain is swapping it in. It would only take me an evening, but that's because I've done this crap at least a dozen times. |

So a head that will crack and headers when the exhaust manifold cracks plus a set of injectors.. I can deal with that. (it doesn't matter if it sits broken for a few days, unless it's snowing) |

I'd reenforce the new exhaust header, and drop it in when doing the head. Better to do it all at once before inevitable failure. |

I've got them on my armada. I like them a lot for all around use. Quiet on the highway. Not super meaty but a bit more agressive than a standard tire. I got stuck once in 20" of heavy snow but I was one of 2 people to even make it out of my neighborhood in the morning that day (got stuck in the afternoon when it was warmer/heavier snow turning into my driveway up my hill).
I live on a dirt road and go exploring in the national forest near me on two-tracks and have no issues with them. |
