My 2010 Race Car Build - From the Ground Up
As some of you may know, I spent the better part of 2009 turning my 2005 STi, previously my daily driver, into a race car for NASA's TTS and ST2 classes. The car came a long way and was constantly evolving a gaining pace. I was able to win the TTS Championship for NASA Mid-Atlantic, which was somewhat unexpected. Unfortunately, I lost the car in an incident caused by brake failure during a casual morning warmup on the last race day of the season This is what it looked like just before its demise:
Needless to say, it didn't look so pretty after the accident. Since there wasn't a whole lot I could salvage from the car, I considered going in a different direction. Corvette, M3, RX7 were all possibilities. But I have a certain attachment to Subarus, even with all their faults, and IAG happened to have a bare GD shell calling my name. I made the decision to build another Subaru, only this time it would be built from the ground up exactly the way I want it. I have been carefully planning and gathering parts for a couple months, but when I picked up the shell from the media blaster on Saturday I felt like the build had officially begun. Here's what it looks like at the moment. I forgot my camera so sorry for the crappy iphone pics. IAG Performance will be doing all of the fabrication work, including the construction of the roll cage, which begins today. They built an outstanding cage for the last car that saved my life, so I trust that they will build an even better one this time around. I will keep this thread updated as progress is made on the car, I'm really excited for it to start coming together. I have a lot of ideas and I think this will be one of the most unique and well constructed road race subarus in the country. I would like to thank the sponsors who are making this build possible: IAG Performance RaceComp Engineering/GTWorx JRZ Suspension Engineering Stoptech MSI (Moore-Sport Inc.) Kaminari Aerodynamics Racetech Seats North America Strong Auto Concepts Carbone Lorraine Brakes Keep watching this thread for updates! Dan

Here are some non suck pictures courtesy of IAG.
The car on its way to the media blaster: All done! They left the roof alone since it's getting replaced. They also had trouble getting through some of the wheel well undercoating so I'll have to hit that with a wire wheel or chemical stripper. Last edited by boost junkie; 10-17-2014 at 02:14 PM. |

This is going to be awesome. IAG does amazing work too! Just wondering, why's the roof panel being replaced?
I see the hole in the a pillar, I'm guessing this was a bugeye? And that was for the antenna? What exterior are you planning on using? |

This is going to be an awesome build. I can't wait to finally make a thread of my own in a couple of weeks (won't be as awesome as this though haha). IAG should be getting some good exposure this season.

IIRC you have a SmartyCam. Just an FYI the GPS won't go through a Carbon Fiber Roof. I've even had issues with some customers who put it in between two CF seats where it doesn't have a good enough 'view' of the sky. |

For the undercoating, just use a propane torch and warm it up, it will scrape off very easily.
I do this all the time when sandblasting older cars. |

There aren't as many carbon bodied cars out there as you'd think so for the most part it hasn't been an issue. Most common cars I've heard of issues from are some Lotus guys. There are a couple of fixes. 1. Run a regular GPS module and use that antenna that can be mounted externally. 2. Wait for them to add the GPS antenna to the SmartyCam. They've talked a lot about it so I am pretty sure it will happen. Just a matter of when. 3. Mount the SmartyCam on the outside of the car. There was a prototype for an aero mount over the camera last Nov/Dec. Again not sure on timeframe. |

Is it cheaper at welding supply stores? I notice everyone mentions getting it there when they're removing material off chassis. It's $.99/lb at my local grocery stores.

for all the posts i've read from you on various forums, i never saw anything about the unfortunate season ender. good luck with your new build, and I can't wait to see what you do with it from the ground up.
then i hope to see you come up for a NASA NE event, so I can see this thing in person. plus, then you can run with the EFI boys in ST2. |

Q: Are you cutting the roof down for a lower Cx? Last edited by Kosmic; 01-26-2010 at 01:29 AM. |
