Would you buy a used 2015 STI for $36k when you can get a new for that price?

I just started reading this thread and already found it to be very informative and interesting. Funny enough, I actually ended up in a Subaru because Beyer was closed the day I went out to initially go used car shopping back in November (website said they were open...it was a Sunday). If it wasn't for that, I may have ended up in a Lancer instead. I'm REALLY happy and in love with my Subie.

Gawd I am so happy that we were closed!! Love is THE word owners use. Typically we are open for the last three Sundays and closed on holidays.

That seems like a ridiculous deal to me boosted56 as the Under Spoiler Kit is really only available Dealer Installed. This drives up the MSRP and Labor costs dramatically for the dealer. I'd say your WAY under Invoice if that number really includes all of the t,t,fees.

The point of this thread isn't to go over pricing guys. It's more about demystifying the whole car buying process. Please pm me if you need advice or pricing info with a deal.

zackg - If that is your Sale Price it's ridiculously under Invoice and I would sign-up straight away. It's almost like they didn't include the Accessories??

Hey sorry for missing the point of the thread. I bought it before I posted here. I thought the same thing. I think the salesman quoted me for the wrong car.

Really legit article from PM -

Quote:
• It's not like it was in the eighties. Car manufacturers can't get away with building a subpar product.

• Don't go car shopping without already having a price.

• Ninety percent of people who come in say that they're just looking. I'm the same way. I like to be left alone when I shop for a car. I'm looking for certain things, like bolts that have been cranked on. If there is a wrench mark on a bolt, I know that the fender has been replaced.

• The salesman gets paid off the amount he gets over invoice, which is the price the dealership paid to get the car from the manufacturer. (Invoice does not include holdback, the money given to a dealership after the car sells.) If someone pays less than the invoice, the salesman gets a mini deal—a flat payout from the dealership, usually between $100 and $200. Most cars sold today are mini deals. Especially new cars.

• If you really want to know what vehicle to buy, ask the service department. They see what's coming into the shop. They know what's having trouble.

• My No. 1 job is to get people to finance the car through the dealership. Which means cash is the worst thing to tell me you want to pay with. You're basically saying that I'm not going to make a dime off you. If that's the case, you want to give as little information as possible until we've agreed on a price.

• A lot of times we add $1,000 to the price and take it away later, assuming that everyone will negotiate. And everyone will negotiate. Even the sweetest old ladies in the world turn into saber-tooth tigers when they sit down at the desk.

• The worst thing you can do is walk in with your guns blazing, insisting on a price that you know is too low. You'll be sent out the door. We just won't go out of our way. If a nice customer asks, "Do you have any of these?" typically I would offer to dealer-locate a car. For a jerk it's just "Nope."

• Be realistic. Don't come in trying to get a $35,000 car for $200 a month. Customers are still looking for that $200 payment. That's what I was looking for in 1989. The reasonable payment is $300, $400, or $500 a month. If you're realistic, you can spend invoice only, and that's before rebates.

• Used-car values are so tough. Kelley Blue Book always hits it high. Edmunds too. Higher than what you can buy them for in an auction. We can't give you $15,000 because we are going to try to sell it for $16,000, and every car we bring in is going to need $500 to $1,000 worth of work. Then the next guy is going to want to negotiate.

• When you're taking your car in to trade it in, for the love of God, clean it. Four out of every five cars I take in on trade are filthy. Not just dirt on the outside. There's trash, stuff in the glove box, cigarettes in the ashtray, garbage on the floors, kids' trash everywhere, food. And then they argue about how much the car is worth. That's one place you can affect your trade-in value: Clean your car.

This story appears in the July/August issue of Popular Mechanics.

Shouldn't you be asking the dealer?

I would say it depends on the respective dealer.

For the most part everything is refundable. Especially if you haven't taken possession of it.

Call the dealer and see what they have to say.

I'm curious how much(willing) a dealer can put pressure on SOA for a potential (and previous) customer. I ask because I am not feeling the love from Subaru right now. Between my Impreza with 2 brake line corrosion recalls + takata air bag replacement recall and my wife's Legacy just getting the recall notice for the windshield wiper motor, I am pretty frustrated..

I want to drop the Legacy off to get work done, but shouldn't have a passenger, i.e. my wife, in the front passenger seat of what would then be our sole car, my Impreza. Owning 2 Subarus sucks right now. (She would get sick in the back seat, can't drive stick *yet, and our dog rides with us a lot)

The reason for wanting SOA involved is for my ability to leverage a deal without putting the dealer in a bad spot. I understand the dealer/salesman aspect of the deal so I don't want to go in angry and F the dealer over, but it would be nice to dump off my Impreza with the recall issues for a fairly good price (ideally what's left on the loan) and work something out for a new Forester. I have other motivations as well because my current loan interest rate sucks but my credit score is significantly better than it was 2.5 years ago so fresh paper would help.

An added wrinkle is that I have WRX struts/calipers and RCE springs on, and no longer hold the stocks.

Thanks in advance for the insights.

No. The Subaru Dealer Body has no leverage for what you are asking for.

You would need to start a relationship with a salesman/dealer to see what all you can get worked out with the respective dealer.

You would need to speak to Subaru directly to voice your concerns, opinions, etc through Subaru Customer Service at 1-800-782-2783 or 1-800-SUBARU3 to see if they would be able to help you out with any other perk you are asking for.

Hello everyone!

Is this thread still alive? I am currently looking in purchasing a new car and have a 2018MY on my radars. Was wondering if anyone would be able to recommend me a dealer in the NoVA/DC metro area? Also generally when should the 2018MY pricing start being available / be able to order? Thanks~
