Angry Morette projector lens broke

Well, I get home tonight and notice that something it's quite right with my lights - I go outside and look, and my right projector has been knocked from the housing! there are little glass bits in the housing too, so the projector has been chipped around the edges.

So I figure that I'll try to pop off the housing and try to glue/caulk it in, and I can't get the freakin things apart! The 225 degrees for 10 mins thing doesn't do anything! So now I'm sitting with a broken projector at the holidays, I'm about to move, so I don't know what the heck I'm supposed to do... I am pissed something fierce though. Does anyone know if I can get a whole replacement housing, including bulb et all, for JUST the projector on the passenger side?

On Morrettes, the lense, reflector, housing must all be replaced as a unit. Ken at Rally Performance may be able to get replacement units for you.

Important safety tip,
Get some protective film if you have Morrettes, they break easily. Film is available from xpel and others.

How did you break the lens? This could be important, as more people begin to consider the feasibility of projector setups like the Prodrive (which is presumably sturdier than the Morrette, given the vast price difference).

Well, here's what I figured out happened...

There is a little metal ring that has bevled fingers on it that slide into sockets. The act of sliding into the sockets holds the lens flush against the adjustment frame.

The lip on the lens broke (cracked) and shattered on the EDGE only, so the sockets came loose, and the lens was flopping around inside of the housing. By the way, this a Valeo housing/lens.

I took my trusy dremel and cut open the housing, since baking it in the oven didn't do squat. I then fiddled with the lens, positioned it in manner where tehedges weren't cracked, rebent the little O ring, and slapped it back on. Threw on some hot melt glue around the little socket bit so the O ring can't move, and then epoxied the housing back together. A real great job, but I can't afford to get new lights right now.

I think I'd have a real tough time trying to get a matched lens, since I got this from Graham Goode in the UK, and everyone over here seems to be selling the morettes with Hella optics in them. I'll let everyone know if the job works.

EDIT: I already had the protective film on them. What I think happened is that some big bump must have jarred the lights enough to shatter the lens edge.

Shawn - I actually did send you an email (admittedly later than expected) a few months back with the prices, but maybe I had the wrong addy for you? It took Morette a while, but I finally got the full listing of replacement parts.

The lenses are available seperately from us (as a direct distributor for Morette). Morette has the WRX replacment lenses available, but only in load corrector form (it has the plug, etc. to be fitted to the electric heaight adjustment they get elsewhere int eh world, but not in the US). These are useless though, as I don't think they can be adjusted for height, etc. manually. We have part numbers, but no pricing on the GDA lights as of yet (new age WRX). I will email Morette tonight though and post here results when they respond.

We do have prices for the GC8 models thogh, and they are:

Complex version, outside lense (houses the H1 bulb): $50.00each
Complex version, inside lense (houses the H2 bulb): $35.00 each

Standard version, outside lense (H4 bulb): $30 each
Standard version, inside lense (H2 bulb): $35 each

All prices are per side, plus shipping

One question for you adam...

I've done a hack job to my morettes, gotten the projector and all sorta glued in, but now one of my freakin relays have busted!

Do you happen to have replacement parts at all for these morettes? Specifically, the relay is a Hella 4RA 940 010-54 12V 25A relay.

It's the master-control relay for the headlights. It's got a green housing.

If not, I may be VERY interested in getting a new set of morettes if they use different optics than the Valeo ones. Those were pretty much crap.

santino,

not to put you off, the morettes are great - just confirm what set of optics are coming with them. I think the morettes for the WRX have 3 different types of optics that can come in them. Mine were Valeo. I know that hella makes some, and someone else too...
