How much did you unscrew it?

The instructions clearly say to unscrew it a little so that you can pull the rack down. If you unbolted it completely and the rack fell, then you're toast.

I pushed hard up, with my left hand, and with my right hand and a socket wrench I tightened it up.

PUSH!!

Make sure your steering wheel isn't locked. Put your key into the ignition and make sure your steering wheel is free to turn, the steering knuckle only goes on one way.

I did it without a problem. The round bushing seemed a bit bigger and when I tightened it down, it kinda squished in the areas where the clamp meets the crossmember. It's nice and tight and the diameter arround the rack was tight on, just the outside was a wee bigger.

Any thoughts?

And no, no problem with the square one.

Mine did that too Leonardo. I'm going to have the guy at the alignment shop today give me his thoughts on if it makes any difference.

i got it, theres only one way to put the knuckle back onto the column, theres an alignment groove that was on the other side of the coulmn that i couldn't see and i was trying to force it together while it was aligned improperly, i used whiteout to mark the aligngnment groove and got it up just fine in about 30 seconds, so all is well. also, my passenger side is also a little too long, doesnt' look like its gonna have any ill effects though. love the bushings though, exactly what i was looking for , INCREASED STEERING RESPONSE!!!!! yay

I asked the guy at the alignment shop, and he said he wouldn't worry about the bushing being squished over a bit since the rack is held in extremely tight by that bracket. There's no play in mine. He said to just check on it every so often and make sure the bushing sitll looks okay.

Mine were done with the rack in palce. Rack not actually dropped.

I think the steering response thing is WAY overstated with this mod. Perhaps it is lost with the ALK, solid camber plates, stiff springs and all the chasis braces. I dunno. Doesn't feel much different to me if any. Not like other mods that is for sure.

I put mine in without taking the steering linkage loose.
No big improvement here either. Maybe if I had no other suspension mods it would have made a bigger difference.

I have a question. I had to drop my rack slightly and I was able to get it back to the original mark, but it just seems low to me. How high up on that shaft with the lines on it is it suppossed to go? Mine is close to the bottom and it worries me that maybe it is not high enough.

Thanks.

How close to the end? Did you make a mark prior to loosening it up? Push hard up on the steering rack nd try to lock it up where it was

I did mark it, I guess just not that well. It seems pretty close to the end to me, although I think I have it back to the place that I marked off. I guess the best way to explain it is that I can't see or even feel the splined part coming through the hole in the bottom, if that makes any sense. It did move up a bit when I got the rack torqued up. I think I will climb back under there tonight and try to get it on a little further. I just don't want it to bind or something if it is too tight.

I need more info on these hardened bushing, where exactly does it go and what vendors/brands are available? What's the main benefit?

You can try this thread to get you started in your research. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ering+bushings
It has links to two very detailed sites with pictures detailing installation. The stiffer bushings replace your steering rack bushings and hold it in place much better than the rubber, which increases response. I bought the Whiteline ones for about $30.00 and they were well worth the cost and effort. The car turns in quicker now and has much better self-centering tendencies. I am still amazed at the difference this cheap mod makes.

did mine last week and I noticed better overall steering feel. It seems to me that this is a very similar mod ot dooing the diff locks and bushings in back. Gives a bit of NVH in exchange for a bit better feel and alignment stability.

There seems to be quite a variation among cars in terms of how tightly the rack is held with the stock bushings, so ymmv. Some of the previous threads describe cars where the rack moved enough side to side that the steering wheel would actually change its orientation in the straight ahead position when turned full lock one way or the other, or even under quick normal turns. Mine never did that at all.

I noticed an immediate difference with the Whiteline bushings, but it wasn't huge. Primarily more precision around the center zone. But for me, definitely worth the effort.

Do the hardened bushings make the steering more twitchy? I like better response, but if it's annoyingly twitchy on the road, I think I'll pass.

Hmmm, if that's the case, I might be more inclined to do it now.
