Kandahar eh? I'm in training right now to *potentially* go there in a month.

I've already heard all sorts of poo-pond stories.

But it's Disneyland in Afghanistan!

The worst part about having that thing crash into your beach is having to listen to it go on, and on, and on about the most mundane things.

Talk to them everyday.. I work at a smaller approach just NW of KAF. We get AN-12s a lot more than the 32. We also get th AL70s...

There are plenty of RADARs around here. Plenty. More than I can count, and I work at one of them. UAS ops make up almost half our traffic, and they are needy ass bastards.

these days you can build a drone from spare parts off ebay

the most prohibitive part of a project like that is having a reliable way to communicate with it.

that's not gonna do you much good over the ocean

it needs to be able to triangulate its position using a variety of sources

such as air traffic, cruise ships, GPS and other satellites

it helps to have your own satellite in orbit, but if you don't you can use ones already up there passively, like way points.

it needs to be autonomous so that if you lose communication, it can still record its trip and fly home.

all very doable.

Just make sure it floats so we can read about it when it washes up.

Load a mission into your amateur UAV, turn the Go Pro on, and take off. Switch to autopilot mode and you've got yourself a local recon mission.

That's scary. The military ones are bad enough as is, now we've got the DIYers to watch out for.

DIYers don't have red tape to worry about.

not only will it float, it will recharge its hydrogen fuel cell using solar energy, then take off and again and come home.

Ahhh. They can hardly shoot a rocket or a mortar let alone use a RADAR.

Yep, it's called "lost-link". Depending on where the UAS will be operating, there will be a "designated" airfield in which the UAS will pilot itself to and land. A few Global-Hawks have our airfield as the designated, but they always seem to regain control just as it enters our airspace.

The only think that blows it that it will do what it wants to until it lands unless you can establish a link.. The only reason I bitch is because I'm ATC and those things are in the way enough as it is.
