How to Take Payment?
What's the best way to take payment without getting scammed with some fake bank check or whatever? Wire? Paypal?

PayPal is fine, it doesn't really matter on your end whether you do a gift transaction (no fee) or the transaction with a fee that offers the buyer protection. But to be quite honest PayPal will side with the buyer in a dispute almost every time. Also, I'm not really sure what you're worried about, you can just wait for the payment to clear before you send the stuff.

BEST way? Cold hard cash. There is more risk with anything else, but as mentioned PayPal is popular.

Paypal? At about 3%, you're paying $300 in fees on a $10k car?
I just bought a car. Did the ppi with the owner and talked with the shop as it was being performed. Then drove with the owner to my credit union. While he watched, I had them make out a treasurer's check (it's the CU's version of certified) to him. No risk for him as he could see that the check was being made by the CU and not being a fake one. A bank wire would be safe but from a buyer's perspective, you'd have to have a lot of trust. I've accepted a wire once for an expensive guitar that I sold. I would not have been so trusting myself. Or is this a long distance sale where the buyer wants to paypal you money from across the country and then have you ship the car with his shipper? That's a total scam. You'll think you have money and when you check your paypal acct, you'll have nothing. If you do accept paypal, go into your paypal account, withdraw the money. Don't ship the car until the money arrives in your bank account. Then break the bank link. You can always put it back later. Worst case then, the scammer attempts to steal the money back or go through the paypal process to get it back and there's no money there. You have to be willing to lose that account, however. |

A gift payment CAN and WILL be disputed. DO NOT try to take a gift payment from someone you don't know personally. When a gift payment is disputed, there is no arbitration process, money goes directly from your account back to theirs and there is nothing you can do about it. I've yet to lose a dispute as a seller. Follow their instructions and you'll have no issues. This includes trackable shipping to the confirmed address listed in the transaction ONLY. ONLY use PayPal if the item will be shipped. If the item is being picked up, cash only. Most payments clear immediately. If you mean after you've transferred te money into your bank account, that does not protect you against a dispute. If your balance is thrown into the negative and you don't resurrect it, it'll go to collections. |

What are you selling? For a car sale, I would want a certified bank check and go to the bank with the buyer and deposit the check.
That or cash at a bank and deposit it immediately as I don't want to carry thousands of dollars with me. |

I just bought a car from a guy, we decided it would be easiest to do a bank wire transfer, my bank to his.
I assumed a wire transfer would be pretty quick, it wasn't. For whatever reason, plan at least one business day for the whole process to complete. I've never had a problem with PayPal either, & I've used it a bunch of times. |

I've heard stories of people using counterfeit cash out here in So Cal. If you take cash bring a counterfeit pen.

Cash-always the risk of being robbed. Guy gives you cash, you give him what ever he bought-he pulls gun.... Plus the counterfeit issue.
If big cash, do transaction at bank. |

buy a counterfeit money pen at staples for $3. It ID's the paper which is a million times harder to get than a nice printer to make them look legit.
fan the bills out, swipe with pen. done. |

I would say Paypal or USPS money orders, based off of this, the second best payment these guys (a site like ebay, but for guns, etc) recommends USPS as an alternate since Paypal are asshats and will not let you exchange money for firearm related products with them....
http://www.gunbroker.com/Support/Sup...spx?faqid=1112 And as others have noted, do NOT use a gift on paypal for any large amount of money to get around the fee's you are not going to be protected if you get screwed when you are trying to get out of their fees that make them money.... |

Wire transfer is the best method to protect yourself. However, depending on the situation the buyer may not want to use that, because they can not get it reversed for whatever reason. If its something online I prefer paypal (as a buyer) for my protection, or paypal/wire (as a seller) for my protection. If its in person, Cash.
