Subaru of America, Inc. Announces Voluntary Recall of 2000 Through Certain Very Early 2003 Model Year Legacy, Outback and Baja Vehicles in 'Salt Belt' States

- Campaign to Address a Possible Rear Suspension Corrosion Problem -

CHERRY HILL, N.J., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc., the only car company that offers symmetrical all-wheel drive as standard equipment on every vehicle in its product line, today announced a voluntary recall on certain 2000-2001 models, some 2002 models, and very early production 2003 models including Subaru Legacy, Outback, and Baja vehicles in "salt-belt" states to address a possible rear suspension corrosion problem.

This recall involves Subaru Legacy, Outback, and very early production Baja vehicles. Model years include 2000 through 2001, some 2002 models, and approximately 45 very early production 2003 vehicles. The vehicles were produced between May 1, 1999 and April 30, 2002. Approximately 170,000 vehicles are potentially affected in the "salt belt" region. This recall will include vehicles originally sold and/or currently registered in the states of CT, DE, DC, IA, IL, IN, KY, ME, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VT, VA, WV, and WI.

Certain rear suspension subframe components were produced by a supplier with poor paint quality which, after continued exposure to corrosive road salts for a period of several years, may result in rusting of the component and eventual breakage of the subframe. If such breakage would occur while the vehicle is being operated, control of the vehicle could be affected.

The campaign was launched as a result of Subaru field inspections and quality assurance testing. There have been no accidents or injuries attributed to this problem.

The rear suspension subframe of vehicles operated in the "salt-belt" states will be cleaned and rust-proofed with anti-rust oil and anti-rust wax at no cost to the owner. Subaru will provide a campaign bulletin to dealers, and in late June or early July a recall notice will be sent to all registered owners who have already purchased one of the affected vehicles, advising them of the potential defect.

Bump for the useful info.

It's nice that SOA is being proactive about this.

Angry

Bump and complaint...

Do dealers have this info yet? My GF's 2000 Outback is in the shop right now and I asked the service technician about the recall...they say there isn't one.

I'll be headed down there today with printed copy of the press release from SOA's website.

Lancaster County Motors is quickly losing points in their service dept.

Peace,
Oquipah

From the original post:
"Subaru will provide a campaign bulletin to dealers, and in late June or early July a recall notice will be sent to all registered owners who have already purchased one of the affected vehicles, advising them of the potential defect."

It's possible that dealers have not been officially notified yet. Or, if they have, there hasn't been an official TSB yet.
I remember some members posting about the GD impreza clutch shudder, and their local dealer(s) not knowing about the TSB until they were told (by the GD owner) about the TSB number. Something similar may be happening here.

satrya- thanks for the reply, before I went to the dealer.

I may show them the announcement, so they know I'm not pulling their chain.

Guess we'll wait till the official letter comes to us, or until the rear suspension breaks off.

Peace,
Oquipah

My '98 OB got a similar recall (one of many recalls on that SOB Legacy) a few years back. It's front suspension spring rust problem. Please remind me these incidents next time when I consider buying another Legacy based car from SOA. Obviously SOA uses a lot of GM parts suppliers here in US.

You're welcome.

Perhaps someone else who knows more about the paperwork involved could be more useful, but imho, dealers may not be able to do anything about the corrosion until the official TSB (or whatever it is supposed to be called) is released. Good dealers may try to repair it their way, but it may not be repaired the same way that the official TSB would specify. Unless the problem is really serious, I would rather wait for the official recall; if I were in this position.

For example, without an official TSB instructions, they may decide to get an identical part and replace whatever part that is rusting, only for it to corrode again a few years from now. I'm sure that in general, the TSB would suggest a more reliable & robust solution, such as performing a good rust-proofing or replacing it with parts that are not prepared in the same inferior way as the original parts.

My 2 cents

legacies = US
impreza = gunma, japan

guess it shows

upside: time to trade in the OB for a OBS!

I sold my '97 OBS for my '03 WRX. Need a larger family car. That's why I kept the OB so far.

'97 OBS = 1 recall
'98 OB = 5 recalls
