time to replace CV joint and Cv boots..
On my 95 Impreza L.. I found out where the clicking is coming from and thats the Right front wheel. their is a fairly large hole. Does anyone know what the price is to replace it and to put new boots on?

This looks like an inboard joint. I replaced the same right-side boot last weekend. That boot seems the first to fail because it's right above the catalytic converter. Are you sure the clicking sound comes from the joint? There 's still some grease left as far as I can tell. Any idea how long the boot has been torn?

Was hard to make from the photo which one it was, but I thought it was the inboard because an outboard OE boot should have rubber rings in two larger "valleys". Anyhow, a reman. axle from Subaruparts is $106 with a $60 core charge. I had one on order but cancelled and bought a boot instead.

My estimate for having an axle replaced by the dealer would be around $200, using the list price for a Subaru reman. axle and adding labor which shouldn't be more than 30 min. But somehow this figure seems optimistic. Anyone had it done?

forget about the dealer, go to Autozone get a re-man axle for $60 w/ lifetime warranty, pay another $50 to a street mechanic to change it.

I had my outer front boots fail within a week of each other. But i caught them lterally a few minutes after it happened (easy to see the grease all over my P7s) and didnt drive it till i could get it to the dealer (was at school and had no place or tools to do it myself ). To remove the axle, remove the old boot, rebuilt/inspect the CV joint, repack itwith grease and add a new boot It was $140.
A week later the 2nd one went and It was the same price. Add the price of a halfshaft into that. Ide get the whole halfshaf replaced if youve been driving like that. YOuve most likely contaminated it already. |

I recieved a spare cv boot from a subaru dealer to replace my torn right front. I was able to take the axel out and replace it the same day using a Chiltons Subaru book. It was a great learning expeirence and best of all I spent $0.

Spacial tools to remove and replace axle?
Hi, I have a bad boot, and at $60 for a reman axle, I would rather replace the shaft than get a split boot kit (which I never seem to get 100% right anyhow...).
I have been looking at the shop manual, and they show two "special tools", one to press out the axle from the wheel housing (they say use "if necessary", that means it is not alway's necessary??????) and one to pull the new axle into the wheel. Did you get these tools, or is there another way, or similar tools to use? I will have to ask at the parts store, where they will loan proper tools, but I am not sure if they would have this one... What does the tool to pull in the new axle do? Is it to prevent stress on the bearing when inserting? Can the same thing be done with washers that do not go past the inner part of the bearing housing and tightening the bolt (and removing these when the axle is in place)? Thanks, Larry |
