Default Official: Vw will launch new midsize sedan

Quote:
During the drive event where the new 2010 Mark VI Golf is displayed, in an interview, VW’s U.S. president Stephan Jacoby about the company’s plans for the still unnamed New Midsize Sedan (NMS), the replacement of the Passat for North America . Jacoby explains that the problem lies in the fact that the Passat isn’t suited to the distances Americans drive or the size of vehicle preferred. Volkswagen came up with the NMS, a four-door built at the Chattanooga , Tennessee plant, that offers a wider cabin and more rear seat legroom. Expected to be priced from $20,000, the car has been previewed in sketches before; however, a trio of new sketches were recently previewed in Germany . It was then revealed that the car will resemble the VW Quantum due to its lower rear roofline, tightly integrated front end and angular headlamps similar to those seen on the Mark VI Golf. On a different note, it was confirmed that the Phaeton large sedan will return to the US . For quite some time, the Phaeton was being considered for a US return but apparently, Jacoby now thinks that the market is once again primed for a comeback.

I took a ride in my co-workers Passat yesterday and I could "chicken-wing" both of my arms out to the side and not touch a thing....

What makes VW think that this car is too small?

BTW, I'm 5'10", 175

because you are 5'10" 175.

Accords, Camrys are larger.

VW needs a larger mid-size car that can compete on price. From what I remember, the CC will stay (think Acura TSX) and the regular Passat will leave to make room for a large USDM Passat.

And the Passat is not too small, it's just too small to be competitive in volume in the US.

Meh...from what I have seen is the bigger the cars get in this segment the cheaper materials are used inside..just look at the Accord, and Legacy.

that's what sells.

Americans buy by the pound. They think huge equals expensive.

Default Volkswagen Releases Sketch Of New Medium Sedan

Quote:
FOLLOWING THE GLOBAL DEBUT of the 2010 Volkswagen Golf VI, development is well underway on its ‘New Medium Sedan’ (NMS), as our recent spy photos show.
Today, Volkswagen has released a new stylised sketch offering a glimpse of how the final production model might look, featuring the now familiar sharp headlights and long grille of the wider Volkswagen range.

While it is known that the NMS has been designed specifically for the US market - including a production schedule for assembly in the US - rumours abound that the new sedan will be the international successor to either the Passat or the Jetta.

Speaking with TMR today, Volkswagen Group Australia’s General Manager for Press, Karl Gehling would not speculate on the possibility of the NMS’s availability in a right-hand-drive layout.

The as yet unnamed sedan is expected go on sale in the US around the first quarter of next year, but no official word has been offered on a launch date. A Detroit Motor Show debut in January is likely.
