Here's a photo I re-edited for Throwback Thursday...originally shot with my old Nikon D70 in May 2005. 1/60 sec, ISO 200, ***402;10, car going about 70-75 mph with me hanging out the passenger window of my car (my cousin was driving). I might actually use this photo as an example for the selective masking video we had been talking about here previously.

The top right quadrant is completely frozen. It kind of hurts my brain to look at. I'd also clone out the yellow/wood stakes along the road (at least the one right next to the road the car is on). The car looks really nice and sharp with great exposure. I'm not a fan of the headlight processing on a daytime shot. I just does not look realistic to me.

Good suggestions...I took yours and some others that a few of my friends suggested and came up with a new version:

Maybe it's the road that's throwing it off for me but it looks like a composite photo to me. Maybe because there is not a lot of shadow coming off the car? It's a super sharp pick though! I can't wait to try rolling shots.

Thanks! And apparently it's not just you, since a couple other people thought it was a composite as well. It's definitely not...here's the super OG version from May 2005:

And a few others from the same time:

I like it! Thanks for sharing the original. I think if the car was processed like it was from your new edit it might look really good, what do you think?

What type of lens do you recommend for rolling shots?

Well, funny thing is that the only thing I really changed from the original edit was the background, the headlights, and getting rid of the license plate. The car itself otherwise wasn't changed at all from the original edit.

As for a lens for rolling shots, I typically use a wide angle of some kind. Ultra wides can work well, but you've got to have the right distance between you and the car to make sure it doesn't distort too much. Usually, the closer to a normal angle, the better, but those are harder to get tack sharp and you can easily run into space issues while driving side-by-side.

Oh Ok, maybe it was the over all look of the photo that made the car look sharper. I would love you use my 85 for rolling shots but I'm not going to have enough room. Do you think my 50 would work? Any "cheap" recommendations for Canon?

It'll be tough to use either of those for rolling shots to be totally honest. I'm not sure if Canon makes a 35mm ƒ1.8, but that would be the "cheapest" other than a kit 18-55mm lens.

I will start off with the kit lens then. I believe Canon's 35mm is over a grand. Thanks for the advice! I will hopefully have something to post soon!

^^^ 35mm f1.8 is more like $450, the f2 is around $275. But the kit lens is a good start, I have taken quite a few rolling shots with the kit lens with decent outcomes.

Edit: Fixed image link

I have found that a quick 'cheat' for rolling shots is to shoot in landscape mode. Not something that would be 'Armin Approved' I'm sure, but when on the fly sometimes you have to act fast.

shot w a sigma 17-70 2.8-4.0 macro. Its not perfect but it was shot at 17mm...i was driving and shooting at hte same time (not recommended) and this is straight from the camera, just added my watermark.

Definitely not Armin Approved With enough practice, you'll be able to set your camera up on the fly very quickly and not have to use any of the scene modes of your camera. Getting away from using the scene modes is one of the main points of this thread after all

Yeah, I definitely recommend NOT shooting while driving

I actually like some of your before's better than after's. I also do not like what you did with the last sunset shot at all. You basically fabricated a scene that wasn't the original shot at all (changing the boarder...adding mountains...etc.). I know a lot of people do that and I HATE it. We are supposed to be capturing the emotion and action...not fabricating it. Just my opinion...

Well, in regards to the last shot...the paddleboarder change was a joke really. It's Mr. Miyagi from The Karate Kid!

Here is the original edit without changing the paddleboarder, that I have in my calendar and on my portfolio:

As for the mountains, they're not really fabricated at all, just transferred over from another scene. Here are the two originals...I simply took the mountains from the first one and stitched them into the second one:

Whichever one you like better is definitely up to you, but I felt the second one would be more complete with mountains going all the way across. In my opinion, it's really not very different than doing multiple polarizations for automotive photography, since it's not like the mountains came from somewhere completely different. There's a famous Ansel Adams quote:

"You don't take a photograph, you make it."

I very much agree with that, but of course how far you want to take that is up to interpretation. In the end though, you can't make a good photo without good basic building blocks from the start, and to me that's what matters.

And he didn't have Photoshop. I consider adding to the photo from another scene more in the realm of graphic design and digital publishing rather than Photography. It is one thing to recover blown out highlights or underexposed shadows...it is another thing to add things that weren't there to begin with. So yes...I agree with the quote but I do not agree on how people interpret that these days vs. when he was shooting. True landscape photographers like Adam's waited for what probably seemed like forever for all of the elements to come together for their "perfect shot"...they didn't just make it on a computer.

Just don't forget he spent a lot of time in the darkroom. His photos didn't come out as they did without the post processing of the time. Given his philosophy, if he had the means to add/change things in in post processing, he very well could have. It's pure conjecture of course if he actually would, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did.

if you don't like using the tools you're handed then don't use them. Go draw a picture with a pencil if you want, but make sure you only use black lead, don't use the colored stuff.

Times have changed. Roll with it. If you don't want to adapt that's your prerogative. The tools we have available to us today allow us to expand our creativity. Everyone has their own definition of what it means to be a photographer. Just because someone who's well known did it one way doesn't mean you have to be locked into doing it that way only.

See that's funny. I use Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4 every day. It isn't about the tools. I actually know professional landscape photographers and they will tell you the exact same thing. Anyone can make a scene...capturing a scene takes much more effort and patience. Automotive work allows for much more of the chop and make than landscape does (hell...I do rig shots which is fabricating an event). This is in relation to landscape photography and not product photography. However, I did not agree with him either when he wanted me to add clouds to a track shot I took a couple of weeks ago. The clouds were not there that day...no reason to add something that wasn't there.

1. Changed the color of the lights. Why?
2. Looks like an overcooked Instagram filter.
3. Fabricated scene. Horizon dead down the center.

For all of them the original photos looked quite good. A little clean up and touch up would have helped, but IMO you went a bit overboard and degraded the images.

1. Because I felt like it
2. I've got no problem with that comparison. I quite liked the way that edit turned out, and so did the car's owner.
3. We've already discussed the "fabricated" part, but I'm ok with the horizon being in the center for both the original and the edit since the paddleboarder/Mr. Miyagi is exactly at a thirds cross point.
