Pretty stoked about my Christmas presents this year. Nothing high end, but wife got me this tripod and ball head : http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...um_Tripod.html

I then took the cash that I got from various relatives and bought myself a D300.

Now the question is, sell Old Faithful (My d70s) for all of $75 or so or keep it for crazy stuff like rig shots?

Very nice, congrats! The D300 is a good upgrade from your old D70s, especially in terms of handling noise and dynamic range.

You could keep the D70s for rig shots, but I've never tried to use an older camera for rig shots so I'm not sure how well it'll work for you. Worth a try I suppose!

Thanks! The camera finally arrived from B&H last night. First impression is that it's COMPLETELY different than my old camera. I had to go through the manual to understand most of the new settings!

For example, the 51 point versus 3D 51 point autofocus: I need to understand when to use one over the other. Seems like the 3D is better for moving objects, but it appears that there are times when I would not want it enabled.

I usually only use the full 51 point auto focus when I'm in a pinch. I haven't had good luck with the 3D with moving objects in the past, but on the D4 it was vastly improved. The good thing is that you have a lot of single focus points now, so you have a bit more freedom in composition, especially when you're on a tripod, since you won't have to focus first then recompose as much anymore.

I ended up spending my lunch break reading about the auto focus system.

Looks like I may not want to use all 51 points, but perhaps the 21 or even 9 point depending on the situation. This blog item was very helpful: http://thephotographysite.org/how-to...300-autofocus/

This is definitely a camera body that I can grow into. Now I just need to start buying better glass.

First time out with the new camera!

I know that a few of these are a bit soft (Next time I'm bringing the tripod), and I could use some advice on the white balance, as I was also having a bit of trouble with that.

Other than that, I'm actually pretty happy with these (As always, let me know what I need to work on, as I still think that they're a bit "centered").

Nice work! I like your 2nd one the best, although I wish the car was pointed more toward the camera like it is in the last two photos. I love how you can see the whole road behind the car and how it gets out of focus as you go back. Overall though, please don't be afraid to post higher resolution photos here on the thread...it makes it much easier to critique things such as sharpness and detail. 1024 pixels on the longest side works great.

As far as white balance goes, when it comes to snow photos specifically, you can really go either way. If you keep it on the colder (blue) side, it works since the whole scene is cold anyway. However, if you move it toward the warmer (orange) side, the colors tend to have a little more pop and saturation, which is also important when your scene is mostly white in the first place. It really is a judgement call by you the photographer...I tend to go with a tiny bit more on the warm side overall.

Thanks! I'll work on repositioning the car next time to get more variety. I just changed the link to the photos. For some reason smugmug won't give me the option to share anything bigger than their "large size". Let me know if you see anything else (I know the first few are a big soft due to camera shake).

I think I ended up with a color temp around 6500 or so.

^^^ In regards to color temp in the snow. That was something I had a lot of trouble with myself. I used my white rex as a model often and in the snow would usually end up converting it to b&w and cooling it in pp. It was regarded by Armin as too cool if I remember his c&c correctly, but I liked the look. I wanna make the viewer say 'brrrrrrrr'

I finally have full access to my flickr account again, so I have been diggin' through last summers shots. I have noticed that my panning/rolling shots all (most anyway) have something in common, blur on the subject. And idk if it's a depth of field issue or camera shake or both? Here is an example, only really looking for C&C on the blur on the rear of the car.

Rolling

Panning

If it is camera shake, how do you fix it in rolling shots? Drink less coffee? Softer suspension??

To go along with the snow theme...It was snowing heavily and my camera was getting wet so I didn't have much time to set up and compose as much as I wanted.

I went for the de-saturated and darker look on purpose on this one

Digging the second one!

Little weird, but I like how the rock wall continues right where the bumper stops. That and the falling snow seems to "pop" more.

I'm curious as to how the first one would look if you processed it in the same manner.

Thanks! I wish the car was cleared off a little more but I literally just drove home from work and wanted to get some shots in before it got dark. Here is the first one re done in the same style as the second one as you mentioned.

And here's one more from the set

Well, for your panning shot it's most likely DOF, but you've got no EXIF info so I can't see what aperture you're using. For the rolling shot (which also doesn't have EXIF), it's most likely a combination of camera shake and shutter speed. The rolling shot you posted isn't really sharp overall...do you remember what shutter speed you used? If this was a case of the "cheating" Landscape mode, then you might have just proved my case against using that

These are really great man...I like the desaturated one with the rock wall the best. It's also a good example of using a warmer white balance for snow instead of a cooler one. I might say try to get lower, but only if you're dressed warm enough to get closer to the ground snow

On my blog, I posted my "2012 Year in Review" that has my favorite photos taken over the past year. You can see them all (77 of them) here:

2012 Year in Review | Armin Ausejo Photography

Since NASIOC only allows 10 photos per post, here are 10 photos from my 2012 Year in Review that you probably haven't seen here on this thread (mostly because they aren't automotive-related):

I hope everyone has a safe and happy new year!

Hmmm... Wonder why Flickr deleted the exif? The panning shot was 1/125 f5. The rolling shot, A: I don't remember and B: Sadly that entire folder seems to be MIA from my hard drive. However I do believe it was shot in landscape mode, sooooo, you might have a point.

Can you link to the actual Flickr page for that photo? Maybe it didn't show the EXIF for a lower res version? I'm not sure...

But yeah if the panning shot was at ***402;5, it's most likely a DOF thing combined with a bit of camera shake. I've had a similar experience with this photo for example...the rear is sharp, but the front isn't because I didn't lead the car enough in my shot...this is 1/160 sec @ ***402;5.6:

But then when you've got it all working for you, even at ***402;2.8 the focus can be spot-on:

Thanks! I agree it should've been a little lower perspective but I was in no mood to get into the snow at that point. Great pics by the way, I can't wait to check them all out when I get home. Have a safe and happy new year everyone!!

Hmmm.... When you say 'got it all working for you' do you mean equipment wise or just luck? No sarcasm, just wondering how it's so crisp as 2.8, in the dark for that matter.

In other news, I have a new model to shoot. Picking up an 07 DGM LGT LTD tomorrow

Well after a little over a year of starting photography I finally got a tripod. I only got to play around with it for about 15 minutes but I love it and can't believe I've waited this long to get one! This shot was at ISO 100, f/2.8, 85mm, and .3s. I know this shot needs multiple polariaztions but I don't have Photoshop.

I actually don't mind the snow on the lip and windshield so much since...well, it's snow. Perfectly clean cars in the snow just don't really make much sense realistically, and it's not like the snow that's there is really distracting. The composition and location are good (I might move the car just a tiny bit to the right in the frame though), but I think overall it's a bit underexposed. Since snow is white, it easily fools your camera's metering system, so often you need to compensate a little bit with a little more exposure. You might be able to simply add some in post-processing as well.

I'd say it a mix of everything...better AF technology + good technique + the right camera settings = better "luck." I put luck in quotations simply because you kinda make your own "luck" if you've "got it all working for you"

Congrats on the new purchase!
