Default EJ25 to EJ25 swap, first time, good tips and tricks to know?

I recently picked up a complete DOHC 2.5L from a '98 2.5RS, which I intend to put into my '97 2.5GT. I already have the same engine, but the engine in the car needs to come out and have some work done.

Having never done an engine swap before, I'm looking for tips, tricks, things to look out for, etc. This isn't really the typical swap that everyone documents here since the two engines are the same, so obviously wiring, ECU, etc etc isn't a concern. I am pretty mechanically inclined, and I'll have a fellow gearhead with me who's done a number of engine pulls/installs (but no Subarus). I'm just looking for suggestions on things to watch out for, etc. If this stuff has already been covered, then just point me to the appropriate threads.

Thanks,
Pat Olsen

Pat, that is the easiest swap you could do no real tricks involved here. just take your time and label everything you can. Label the trans bolts and put them in baggies. Any problems feel free to ask

There arent many bolts to keep track of... Just label the fuel lines for reinstalling into the right spots and make sure they all are good before driving the car.

Before you put it in, now would be an excellent time to go through the "new" motor and do:

* timing belt
* cam seals
* front crank/oil pump seal
* rear main
* head gaskets, maybe?

Check the power steering pump/lines for leaks. Repair or replace accordingly. Take pictures if you have a digital camera. It always helps to have a visual record of how something should look when it goes back together.

Most of that stuff (timing belt, HGs, and all the seals involved with the HG swap) was done just 9k miles ago, which is a big part of the reason I jumped at the chance to pick up this engine.

Good thought on taking pictures, I'll be sure to do that.

check plugs(gap) wires and such also since people seem to complain about getting at them when in the bay.

i used to label and baggy things up or leave them in the hole they came from, but with something this easy i usually put bolts in a couple seperate bins and work from them. but i've done tons of engine swaps so im used to that way.

digicam is a great idea, just take pics of bags labeled and order of install/uninstall before you undo anything. be sure to take reinstalls so you can make your own DIY or sticked thread. very clear pics are best obviously, so get your lights ready before you snap shots!

Good stuff, reddevil. One question... I haven't crawled under the car to take a look yet, but what is the one bolt you're referring to (the one that's a bitch to get to) in #10 of your list? Is that one of the engine mount bolts?

Its the tranny to engine block stud on the driver side. The stud coming out of the block, that goes through the tranny and you install a nut to. But it needs a wobbly, and some curse words to get on and off. So its easiest (for me!) to just pull the axle. But if you have it on a lift, then its ALOT easier.....

Personally? I leave it off. I have done over 100 drag launches with only 3 out of 4 bolted up. Stupid? maybe. But everything is still hunky dory!
