what the heck is going on in here lol.

if people (photographers) want to complain about 'fabricating' images. you might as well just throw away photoshop and lightroom all together and just upload to flickr/fb/wherever else right off the camera.

removing ANY distractions, changing color tones, removing rigs = fabricating. its what makes a photographer an ARTIST, opposed to just taking a snapshot and uploading it with no fabricating whatsoever. you want an image to draw more attention to the subject? you have to fabricate it in some form or another. IMO at least.

camera's arent very good with getting things right all the time. certainly, it does happen where we capture images that will require little work, but as artists, making the image draw even MORE attention to where we want, is the difference between a snapshooter and an artist.

this bickering about fabricating is unbelievable.

hey WRX WRC,

i see your car toy.... and i raise you

model car, shot with a GIANT softbox and AB800 directly overhead. i know i will get some flake for the reflection, which fyi is 100% true (used a wonky piece of plexiglass - so it came out distorted)

it was fun to light the car though... wish i had one of those giant studio soft boxes for 1:1 scale cars

can't recover a shot that has no detail to begin with. no amount of photoshop will bring those ones back.

also, this is an automotive tips/tricks/help page. you should try posting in the photoshop thread, you might get more help there.

I know the driver's side of the car has too much glare on it but I still kind of like this picture. I edited it to have a darker feel to it.

I don't mind the glare so much as I do the slanted building on the left. I know you've got the car pretty straight, but you might have to fabricate a straightened building. No easy task in Lightroom, but you could play with the distortion settings to see if it might fix the perspective. I also might just move the car down a little bit in the frame.

Distortion settings? I don't think I'm familiar with those. I'll have to check it out and play around with them,

Yeah, it should be under the Lens Corrections panel. Usually it's set to auto, but if you click on the Manual tab you can do your own corrections. Just be careful not to distort the car...but like I said, this may not work in this particular case.

inkman, side note, keep up what you are doing. i am seeing improvements in a lot of your posts. while we like to critique a lot in this thread and break things down to every little detail, a little positive praise can also help

I find the bickering about fabrication believable and expected. It is a matter of opinion and most people will differ.
I follow Rob's view and disagree with adding things that weren't there.
I think there is a difference between fabrication and reconstruction of a photo. We can all agree that cameras can't capture the same range of light as the human eye. Reconstructing the scene as you saw it by using multiple exposures to create the correct overall shot is fine. The same with adjusting white balance, saturation or hue levels. Using a rig for rolling shots is allowing one person to capture what would otherwise require more people and possibly dangerous situations (hanging out of windows to achieve low angles). By cloning a rig out you are reconstructing what was there in a more appealing way not adding birds that weren't there.
In Armin's shot with the adjusted headlights and clouds, I think the image would be more believable if the sky was more gray with rain clouds. I think the background road appears wet/damp along with the overcast lighting of the trees making the blue sky seem out of place.

My opinion is that you should be able to do anything you want in order to achieve the look you are going after. Who's to say what type of fabrication is "fine" or not acceptable? As long as the final image tells the viewer what you want to convey, that's all that matters. The picture obviously has to make sense (unlike the recent shot I saw of a RWD IS300 on a beach).

I think I plan on keeping my body for a while unless I can get a great deal on a Canon 7D which is the next body I would like for the better AF and faster FPS. I'm looking to pick up a quality zoom lens by spring for some motor sport stuff. I want to see how the new Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 reviews are first before I make any decisions. I believe the lens is being released tomorrow!

This.

The people who think differently are confused. Photography is art, and processing tricks have been around since day 1, they're just more efficient now.

Guys, automotive photography is not about capturing a scene, it's about the presentation of a subject in the way YOU see it. The scenes below did not, and could not exist in reality, but they are the way the subject makes me feel, and the way I wanted to show the subject to the viewer.

That's funny, I want to do the same exact thing! I believe the lens is out for Canon bodies already but not Nikon and Sony.

That came out great, but i do see what you mean about the reflection but that could be fixed in ps with a 2nd layer, i see your toy car reflection and raise it with another "wonky" reflection. did you assemble that model btw?

Nice, i bought one assuming that it would be assembled but nope everything right down to the blinkers needs to be popped out and glued, and painted... no time for that.
